POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい、テレビショッピングが今日のトピックでした。テレビショッピング二人とも好きですか。
Jessi: うーん…私は全然しないですね。
Naomi: 私も買わないですね。見るのはおもしろいですよね、でも。
Jessi: あ、そうですね。
Yuichi:そうですね。見るのは楽しいですよね。で、実際に買ったことはないんですか?
Jessi: あ、ないですね。
Naomi: ないないない。
Yuichi: ちなみに、今日の話に出てきた電子辞書、これ買いたいですか。
Jessi: あ、私 買いたいですね~。ペンで漢字が書けますし、便利そうですよね~。
Yuichi: そうですね。で、岡田が、2つ買うと、もうひとつもらえるって言ってましたよね?
Jessi: すごいですね!
Naomi: 要らないでしょう!だって、電子辞書三つ?!
Yuichi: そう、三つ!
Naomi: 要らないよ、そんなの。
Yuichi: でもこれお得じゃないですか?
Jessi: お得ですね!
Yuichi: これお得って英語でなんていいますか、ジェシーさん?
Jessi: That would be... a great deal, or even a steal, you could call it.
Yuichi: 良いものを安く買えるということをお得といいますね。
Naomi: ゆういちさんはどうですか。テレビショッピングで注文をして、買ったことというのはありますか?
Yuichi: あ、僕も実はないですね。だけどネットショッピングはしますね。
Naomi: あ、なるほど。
Jessi: あ、ネットショッピング。
Naomi: 私もネットで本をよく買いますね。
Jessi: あ、そうですね。So I guess that it looks like none of us have actually bought something through this televised home shopping, right? But rather than buying something through TV, I guess buying something on the net is pretty common, it looks like.
Naomi: そうですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 電子辞書
Jessi: electronic dictionary
Yuichi: 電子辞書と紙の辞書がありますね。どっちが好きですか。
Jessi: うん、私は電子辞書、ですね。 But for looking up grammar, there are a lot of good paper dictionaries out there, I think.
Naomi: そうですね。私も普段は電子辞書とか、あとはコンピュータで調べちゃったりします。
Yuichi: やっぱり電子辞書のほうが
Naomi: 早いですよね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: なのでジェシーさんも直美さんも電子辞書で単語を引くみたいですね。
Jessi: That is actually our next word.
Yuichi: 引く
Jessi: to look up in the dictionary
Yuichi: 「辞書を引く」という風に使います。この「引く」という単語は、to pull という意味でも使われますね。だからといって、辞書を引くって、重い辞書を引いて運ぶというわけではありませんね。
Jessi: 引くalso means "to pull", which is probably familiar to you. But 辞書を引く doesn't mean you're pulling or dragging the dictionary or anything.
Yuichi: この「辞書を引く」の「引く」の意味は、くじを引くと同じ意味です。 So the meaning of this verb hiku is the same as the one in くじをひく, to draw lots. この場合の「引く」は「選ぶ」to chooseという意味に近いですね。
Jessi: Oh, that makes sense.
Naomi: なるほどね。たくさんある単語の中から正しい単語を引く、選ぶ、ということなんでしょうかね。
Jessi: When you think of it that way, it makes a lot of sense. So it means to choose the word you want to look up from the dictionary, the same way you choose a lot from the box or something.
Naomi: 知りませんでした。おもしろいですね。
Jessi: Let's take a look at two words at the same time. The second kanji is the same. The first one is...
Naomi: 送料
Jessi: shipping cost. What's the other one?
Naomi: 無料
Jessi: Free
Naomi: 「料」という漢字が同じですね。
Jessi: 料 means fee. Let's look at them one more time.
Yuichi: 送
Jessi: send
Yuichi: 料
Jessi: fee
Yuichi: 送料
Jessi: shipping cost. And...
Naomi: 無
Jessi: nothing
Naomi: 料
Jessi: fee
Naomi: 無料
Jessi: free, or no charge.
Naomi: そうですね。この二つの単語、よく一緒に使われますね。「送料無料」。
Jessi: Ah, right. Free shipping!
Yuichi: そうですね。インターネットで本を買うときに、よく見ますね。「1500円以上だと、送料無料」と書いてありますね。
Naomi: Amazon ですね。
Jessi: When you buy books or other items online, you see this phrase a lot. For example, free shipping for purchases of more than 1500 yen.
Naomi: 次の単語はなんでしょう。
Yuichi: 消費税
Jessi: consumption tax, sales tax
Naomi: 二つの単語が入ってますね。消費 が "consume" 税が"tax"です。
Yuichi: さて、問題です。
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: あ、直美さんではないですよ!(笑)リスナーの皆さんは、日本の消費税は、何パーセントか知っていますかね?
Jessi: So, listeners, the question was
Yuichi: そうです。ちなみにアメリカの消費税はいくらですか?
Naomi: アメリカは、州によって違いますよね。
Yuichi: へー。
Jessi: そうなんです。でも、だいたい4~8.75%ですかね。ちなみに8.75%は私の出身、カリフォルニアの消費税です。
Naomi: たかーい。
Jessi: 高いですね。でも消費税がない州もあるみたいですね。
Naomi: あ、そうですか。
Jessi: To sum that up, the tax rate in the U.S. varies from state to state, but it basically falls into the range between 4 and 8.75 percent, although some states don't have sales tax at all. And 8.75 happens to be the sales tax for my home state, California.
Jessi: あと、日本に初めて来たに、消費税について驚いたことがあります。
Naomi: なんでしょう?
Jessi: お店で、チョコレートを買おうと思って、レジに持っていったら、値札の値段に、消費税が付かなかったんですよ。
Naomi: あー、日本では値札の値段の中に消費税が最初から入っているからね。
Jessi: そうなんです。So something that surprised me when I first came to Japan was that the price on the tag includes the sales tax, so there are no surprises later. But, I think I like that better, because what you see is what you pay.
Naomi: あ、そうかそうか。
Yuichi: わかりやすいですよね。
Jessi: わかりやすいですね。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we're going to review how to use たら and と, two conditional grammar structures that are very similar. We especially want to focus on when it is okay to use each one. First, let's look at some situations where you should use たら.
Jessi: So with たら, we have sentence A たら sentence B. When sentence B contains a phrase of intention, permission, or a request, you should use たら for the condition in sentence A. You can't use と in this situation. Could you give us an example here?
Yuichi: 12時になったら、お昼ご飯を食べて良いですよ。
Jessi: At 12 o'clock, or when it becomes 12 o'clock, you can eat lunch. The main clause, sentence B, is talking about permission. Another example, please?
Naomi: ハワイに行ったら、フラダンスを学ぼうと思います。
Jessi: When I go to Hawaii, I think I will start learning hula dance. So this expresses the speaker's intention. Can we hear another example?
Yuichi: もし良かったら、車を貸してもらえますか。
Jessi: If it's okay, could you lend me your car? This is a request. So note that in all of these examples, intention, permission, and requests, you cannot replace たら with と.
Naomi: そうですね、あと、「もしよかったら」はset phrase ですよね。
Jessi: あ、そうですね。「もしよかったら」, "if it's OK". You hear this one a lot, I think.
Yuichi: じゃちょっとここで練習してみましょう。
Yuichi: じゃあジェシーさんに何かお願いしてみます。直美さん、何かジェシーさんにしてほしいことありますか?
Naomi: えー?あ、今度アメリカに帰ったら、Hershey's のピーナツバーターカップ買ってきてもらえますか?
Jessi: あ、 いいですよ!もちろん。
Yuichi: じゃ僕はマカロニーアンドチーズを買ってきてもらえますか?
Jessi: 了解です!
Yuichi: よかった!
Jessi: Now let's move on to thow to use the と conjunction. In general, the sentence after と is a natural consequence of the event or action in the one before と. So, it's often used when talking about how to use machines, giving directions, natural phenomena, etc. We want to focus on these three particular situations in this lesson. So, let's practice. I'll say a sentence in English - please say it in Japanese after the pause. Okay, here's the sentence.
Jessi: When you press this button, you can use the electronic dictionary.
[pause]
Yuichi: このボタンを押すと、電子辞書がつかえます。
Jessi: Here's the next sentence. If you turn right, you will see a bank.
[pause]
Yuichi: 右に曲がると、銀行が見えますよ。
Jessi: And here's the last one. In summer, or when it becomes summer, there are a lot of fireworks displays.
[pause]
Naomi: 夏になると、たくさん花火大会があります。
Jessi: So everyone, how did you do?
Naomi: こんな風に、instruction manualとか、giving directionとかによく「と」は使われますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。では、みなさんの国では、春になると、何がありますか。夏になると、何がありますか。
Naomi: 秋になると、何がありますか。冬になると何がありますか。皆さんの国のこと、教えてください。
Jessi: So listeners, please tell us when it becomes spring, summer, fall, or winter, what do you have in your country?

Outro

Jessi: Well, that’s all for this lesson. See you next time!
Naomi: さようなら。
Yuichi: じゃまた♪
