INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: ゆういちです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. Tell Me about Your Past in Japanese.
Yuichi: はい、このシリーズも最後のレッスンですね。
Naomi: あー、そうですね。レッスンの25だから、シリーズの一番最後のレッスンですね。
Jessi: そうですね。早いですね。
Naomi: じゃあ、この最後のストーリーについて、ゆういちさん、教えてください。
Yuichi: はい。今回は、ある大学生の話です。
Jessi: In the dialogue, we have a male university student.
Yuichi: まず、朝寝坊するところから始まります。
Jessi: It starts out with him waking up late. He uses casual speech when talking to himself. He speaks formally when he meets up with the person who is going to interview him.
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは何でしょう?
Yuichi: 過去形 (past tense) の色々な意味を勉強します。
Jessi: In this lesson, we'll learn some different ways to use the past tense.
Yuichi: それでは、聞いてみましょう。

岡田健二:そうです。
店長:夜遅くても大丈夫?
岡田健二:夜は、12時まででしたよね。
店長:店は、12時までだけど、スタッフは1時までだね。
岡田健二:はい。大丈夫です。でも、夜の時給は少し高くなるんでしたよね。
店長:ははは。しっかりしているなぁ。そうだよ。少し高くなるよ。

Jessi: The interview's at one, isn't it? It's twelve-fifty right now, so I'll make it just in time.

Jessi: Um, excuse me. My name is Okada. I'm here for an interview...
店長:あ、面接の方ですね。じゃ、こちらへどうぞ。

岡田健二:あ、はい。そうです。
Jessi: Ah, yes. That's right.

Jessi: I looked at the resume you sent us earlier—you had experience working at a restaurant before, right?
岡田健二:はい。ウェイターをしてました。
Jessi: Yes, I worked as a waiter.
岡田健二:あと、飲み物やデザートを作ったりもしていました。
Jessi: I also made drinks and desserts and other things.
店長:ふーん。岡田君は大学生だったね。
Jessi: Hmmm. You're a university student, right?
岡田健二:そうです。
Jessi: Yes.
店長:夜遅くても大丈夫?
Jessi: Can you work late at night?
岡田健二:夜は、12時まででしたよね。
Jessi: I believe you're open until twelve at night, am I right?
店長:店は、12時までだけど、スタッフは1時までだね。
Jessi: The shop is open until twelve, but the staff stays until one.
岡田健二:はい。大丈夫です。
Jessi: Sure, that's fine.
岡田健二:でも、夜の時給は少し高くなるんでしたよね。
Jessi: But the hourly rate goes up a little at night, doesn't it?
店長:ははは。しっかりしているなぁ。
Jessi: Hahaha, you're pretty well-grounded!
店長:そうだよ。少し高くなるよ。
Jessi: That's right. The rate goes up a bit.
店長:じゃ、来週から働き始められるかな?
Jessi: So will you be able to come in starting next week?
岡田健二:はい!
Jessi: Yes!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。岡田くんは、面接に遅刻しなくてよかったですね。
Naomi: よかったですね。面接にね、もし遅刻したら、かなりマズイですからね。
Yuichi: ジェシーさんとなおみさんは、何か大事なときに、寝坊したことってありますか?
Jessi: Have we ever overslept on a special occasion?
Ah, I have, actually. 大学の話ですけど、日本語の授業の中間テストの日に寝坊して、遅刻してしまいました。本当に焦りました。
Naomi: へー、寝坊するタイプに見えない。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Jessi: すごくショックでした。なおみさんは?
Naomi: 私はあの、遅刻をする夢をよく見ます。
Yuichi: なるほど。
Jessi: あ〜、でも、私も見ます。
Naomi: 例えば、日本語のクラスを教えてるときに、授業に遅刻して、生徒が待ってる…とか。そういうのがすごく怖いですね。
Jessi: あー、わかります。Okay, so let’s sum up the answers. Mine was that, yes. I actually ended up oversleeping and being late for my Japanese mid-term one time. Naomi said that what she overslept on an important occasion. She has a lot of dreams about being late.
Yuichi: リスナーのみなさんの中にも、何か大事なときに、寝坊したことがある、という人がいると思うので、ぜひコメントしてください。
Yuichi: では、ストーリーに戻るのですが、夜の時給は高いみたいですね。
Jessi: The hourly wage at night is higher than normal.
Naomi: なんか、深夜手当とか深夜時給なんて呼ばれますよね。
Jessi: Something like late night hourly wage.
Yuichi: そうですね。で、逆にあの、朝早くても、時給が高いことがあります。
Jessi: あー、そうですよね。例えば、朝6時から働くのは、厳しいですね。 Working very early in the morning is really tough, so I think it deserves a high wage.
Naomi: そうですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初は、履歴書
Jessi: resume
Yuichi: 例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 履歴書を20枚書きました。
Jessi: “I wrote twenty resumes.” Now in the U.S., in other countries and western culture we don’t usually hand write resumes. We usually type them out, but in Japan it’s really common to hand write resumes.
Naomi: そうですね。
Jessi: I guess the employers want to see how well they can write the characters and also show how much effort they put into the resumes.
Naomi: そうなんですよね。
Yuichi: 丁寧に書くのが大事ですね。
Jessi: はい。Let's break down the word.
Naomi: 履歴
Jessi: personal history
Naomi: 書
Jessi: paper
Jessi: When 履歴 is used when talking about the internet, it can also mean "history function", or just "history". 例文お願いします。
Yuichi: さっき見たサイトの履歴が残っているはずだ。
Jessi: "The history of the websites I looked at should still be there."
Naomi: 次、お願いします。
Yuichi: 働き始める
Jessi: to start working
働き始める consists of two verbs. The first one is the masu-stem of the verb 働く or "to work," and the second one is 始める or "to start."You can change the first verb to other verbs, and the meaning becomes "to start doing [the verb]". So, let's check how we say "to start eating" in Japanese.
Yuichi: 食べます
Jessi: This means to eat. Then take away the masu,
Yuichi: 食べ
Jessi: And then attach 始める
Yuichi: 食べ始める
Jessi: to start eating
Naomi: 8時に夕食を食べ始めた。
Jessi: “We started to eat dinner at 8.”
Naomi: じゃ、「勉強し始める」なら?
Jessi: To start studying.
Yuichi: みなさんはいつから日本語を勉強し始めたんですか?
Jessi: So everyone, when did you start studying Japanese? Please tell us!
Naomi: 次は
Yuichi: 受ける
Jessi: to take, to attend, to sit for
How do you say "to have an interview"?
Yuichi: 面接を受ける
Jessi: "to take a test"?
Yuichi: テストを受ける
Jessi: How about "to attend a class"?
Yuichi: 授業を受ける
みなさんは、この三つのうちどれがいいですか?コメントしてください。
Naomi: 面接を受ける、テストを受ける、は、私は絶対嫌ですね。(笑)
Jessi: そうですね。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we are going to learn about some different usages of the past form. We will cover two different usages here, so let's take a look at the first one now.
The past form can be used to show that you have just remembered something. For example,
Yuichi: 明日は、テストだった!
Jessi: ”I remember I have a test tomorrow.”
Jessi: Even if the test is tomorrow, in the future, you should use the past form to show that it is the information that you just remembered. This is mostly used when talking to yourself.
Naomi: じゃあ、ちょっと練習しましょう。
Jessi: Let's practice. The situation is that you just remembered that today is Friday. What would you say in this situation in Japanese?
[pause]
Naomi: あ、今日は金曜日だった。
Jessi: Next, imagine a situation where you called your father at 7 o'clock in the evening, but he didn't answer. Then, you remembered that he was still at work. What could you say?
[pause]
Yuichi: あ、お父さんは、まだ仕事中だった。お父さんの仕事は8時までだった!
Jessi: All right. Now let's move on to another usage.
Yuichi: では、今から言う二つの文を聞いてください。
Naomi: 1. 大阪出身ですよね?
2. 大阪出身でしたよね?
Jessi: Do you know the difference? The first sentence
Yuichi: 大阪出身ですよね?
Jessi: is non-past, meaning "You're from Osaka, aren't you?" You're just confirming the information using よね. How about the second sentence?
Yucihi: 大阪出身でしたよね?
Jessi: This uses the past form, also with the meaning "You're from Osaka, aren't you?" This is different from the first sentence in that it sounds more polite because it's less direct, and also sounds like you are less certain about the fact.
Naomi: 自信がないときは、過去形 past tense を使うんですね。
Jessi: Right, you use the past form especially when you are not certain about something. Could you give us more examples?
Yuichi: たしか・・・ジェシーさんは、チーズケーキが好きでしたよね?
Jessi: “I may be wrong, but Jessi, you like cheese cake, don't you?”
Here, Yuichi used past form because he was not sure whether I like cheesecake or not. Right? Yuich-sani.
Yuichi: はい、そうです。前に、ジェシーさんがケーキ屋の前でチーズケーキが食べたいって言ってたことを思い出したので、聞いてみました。
Naomi: あ、ジェシーさんは甘いものが大好きですよね?
Jessi: Do I like sweets? Of course! はい。甘いものが大好きです。
Yuichi: 好きなものばかり聞いているので、なおみさん、ジェシーさんの嫌いな食べ物って知ってますか?
Naomi: うー、うーん・・・お寿司が嫌いでしたよね?
Jessi: いえ、大好きですよ。
Naomi: あー、そうですか。ジェシーの嫌いな食べ物・・・ゆういちさん分かる?
Yuichi: はい、わかりますよ。これは、自信があります。漬物ですよね?
Jessi: はい、そうです。 I don't like Japanese pickled vegetables.

Outro

Yuichi: はい。では、また。
Naomi: さようなら。
Jessi: Thanks for listening, everyone. Until next time!
