オカダ社長:そうなんですよー。しかも、この「ヘルカロ」はビタミンなども壊しません。
アシスタント:栄養素がこわれないのは素晴らしいですね。
オカダ社長:さらに!温めた料理のカロリーは、自動で表示されます。

オカダ社長:はい、今日ご紹介する新製品は、こちら!
Jessi: Okay! Today, the product we'll be introducing is this!
オカダ社長:シャーポの電子レンジ「ヘルカロ」です!
Jessi: A microwave called Herukaro from Sharpo!
アシスタント(女):大変人気の商品ですね。
Jessi: This is an extremely popular item!
オカダ社長:そうです!塩と油の量を減らすことができるので、とても健康に良いんです。
Jessi: That's right! With it, you can reduce the amount of salt and oil in your food, so it's very good for your health.
アシスタント:なるほど。
Jessi: I see!
オカダ社長:たとえば、から揚げを作りましょう。
Jessi: As an example, let's make some fried chicken.
アシスタント:はい。
Jessi: Okay.
オカダ社長:このヘルカロは余分な油を落とします。
Jessi: This Herukaro model takes away any excess oil.
オカダ社長:見えますか?油が落ちていますよね。
Jessi: Can you see? The oil is dripping down.
アシスタント:うわー、本当ですね。ぽたぽた落ちてる・・・。
Jessi: Wow, you're right! It's dripping right down.
オカダ社長:このように、ヘルシーにから揚げを揚げることもできるんです。
Jessi: You can make healthy fried chicken just like this! Here you are.
オカダ社長:はい、どうぞ。食べてください。
Jessi: Please try it.
アシスタント:(もぐもぐ)おいしい!ヘルシーなのに、おいしく揚がるんですね。
Jessi: (munch munch) It's good! Even though it's healthy, it's fried in a way that makes it delicious!
オカダ社長:そうなんですよー。しかも、この「ヘルカロ」はビタミンなども壊しません。
Jessi: That's right. And what's more, this Herukaro does not break down any of the vitamins!
アシスタント:栄養素がこわれないのは素晴らしいですね。
Jessi: That's wonderful that the nutrients stay intact.
オカダ社長:さらに!温めた料理のカロリーは、自動で表示されます。
Jessi: And that's not all! The number of calories in the food that's been heated up is automatically displayed!
アシスタント:それは、便利な機能ですね!さすが、「ヘルカロ」!
Jessi: That's quite a convenient feature! Just as we'd expect from Herukaro!
アシスタント:で、気になるお値段は?
Jessi: And how about the price everyone wants to know about?
オカダ社長:今回も驚きの価格!!
Jessi: This time we have another surprising price!
オカダ社長:なんと、39800円!どうでしょう!
Jessi: Just 39,800 yen! How about it?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。この商品は、どうでしたか?
Jessi: う〜ん、とてもいいと思います。あの、健康にいいですし、人気の理由がよくわかりました。
Naomi: そうですよね。私も、あの、コンビニとかで商品の後ろにカロリーって書いてありますよね。あのカロリー、私よく見るんですけど、この電子レンジはカロリーも教えてくれるんですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Jessi: 便利ですね。
Naomi: で、ところで、本当にこの商品はあるんです?
Yuichi: 同じではないんですけども、似ている製品があります。
たとえば、カロリーを表示できるんですけど、まだ正確ではない、ということです。
Naomi: だいたい、これぐらい。
Yuichi: う〜ん、そうですね。食べ物の重さだけで、カロリーを計算するみたいですね。
Naomi: ほ〜、面白いですね。
Jessi: So, a microwave that calculates calories like this actually exists! But apparently this function is not very accurate yet.
Yuichi: これからもっと便利な電子レンジが出てくると良いですね。
Naomi: そうですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、油
Jessi: oil
Yuichi: まず、漢字を確認しましょう。左側は、何でしょうか?
Naomi: これは「さんずい」って呼ばれますね。で、この「さんずい」の意味は「水」なんですね。
Jessi: So the radical on the left part of this kanji stands for "water."
Yuichi: じゃあ、右側はどうでしょう?
Naomi: これは「つぼ」という意味みたいです。あの、入り口がちょっと小さいつぼみたいですね。
Jessi: And the right part is a pot that has a narrow opening. So, putting these two parts together, we get an image of oil that is dripping from a pot.
Yuichi: あと「油」を使ったフレーズがありますね。
Jessi: それは何ですか?
Yuichi: 油を売る
Jessi: "to sell oil???"
Yuichi: はい、これは油を実際に売るのではなくて、仕事の途中に、どこか別の場所で話をしたりして、時間を使ってしまうことを言います。
Jessi: う〜ん、なるほど。So 油を売る means "to waste time" or "to mess about." でもどうして、「油を売る」が ”waste time” という意味になるんですか?
Yuichi: それはですね、昔江戸時代に、髪の毛の油を売る人がいたんですね。で、その人がお客さん、つまり主婦の人のところに油を届けに行って、そこで、こう油を注ぎますね。油をあげるわけです。で、そのときにずっと話をしていたから「油を売る」というのが「時間を使う」ということになったらしいです。
Jessi: う〜ん、なるほど!面白いですね。The origin of this expression comes from the fact that long ago, merchants who sold hair products like oil used to chat and gossip with their customers, who were usually housewives.
Naomi: そうなんですよね。油は水に比べて落ちる速度が遅いじゃないですか。だから時間がかかったんです。
Jessi: Ah, okay. That makes sense. So one of the reasons that this phrase came to mean “to waste time” is because the speed at which oil drips down is slower than that of water.
Yuichi: 例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 油を売っていないで、仕事をしなさい。
Jessi: “Stop messing about, and get back to work.” The next word is
Naomi: 栄養素
Jessi: nutrients
Naomi: この単語は、二つの部分からできていますね。
Jessi: This word is made up of two words. The first part is
Yuichi: 栄養
Jessi: nutrition. and the second part is
Naomi: 素
Jessi: principle
Naomi: 最初の栄養という言葉は「ある」とか「ない」とかいう言葉と使いますね。
Yuichi: 栄養がある
Jessi: It contains nutrition, or is nutritious.
Yuichi: 栄養がない
Jessi: It doesn't contain nutrition, or is not nutritious.

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson we are going to learn about transitive and intransitive verb pairs in Japanese. If you remember, in the last lesson, we learned about expressing change with two verbs, する and なる.
Yuichi: Transitive verbsの方は「する」に似ています。誰が何をするかにフォーカスがありますね。
Jessi: The main focus of transitive verbs is the "performer of the action" or "the one doing the action". In this way, it's similar to する. Could you give us an example?
Naomi: ゆういちさんは、ドアを壊した。
Jessi: “Yuichi broke the door.”
Naomi: 何か理由があったんですか、ゆういちさん。
Yuichi: 鍵がなかったので、ドアを壊しました。
Naomi: あ、わざと壊したんですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: In this example, Yuichi broke the door to get into the room. We used 壊す, the transitive verb. The focus on who did the action and in this case, Yuichi. Now... how about intransitive verbs?
Naomi: 自動詞 intransitive verbs は「なる」に似ています。誰がした、というよりも、変化にフォーカスがあります。
Jessi: Intransitive verbs focus more on the "change in state", rather than who did the action, which makes it similar to なる. Can we hear an example?
Yuichi: 電子辞書が壊れた。
Jessi: “The electronic dictionary broke.”
Naomi: これは、ゆういちさんは、自分が悪いって言ってるんじゃないんですよね。単に、電子辞書が「壊れた」って言ってるだけです。誰が壊したっていうことは全然言われてなくて、重要じゃないんです。
Jessi: So this sentence doesn't mention who broke the dictionary, it just states the fact that it broke. That’s the focus. It sounds like the change happens naturally.
Naomi: あー、そうですね。
Yuichi: さて、この二つの基本的な意味の違いは分かったと思うので、ペアで単語を覚えていきましょう。
Jessi: Now let's take a look at some Transitive and Intransitive Verb Pairs. Putting them in pairs makes them easier to remember.
Naomi: そうですね。ペアで覚えておくと便利ですね。
Jessi: That's right. First, let's take a look at an intransitive verb that ends in -aru.
Yuichi: 上がる
Jessi: “to rise” or “go up.” To turn it into a transitive verb, you change -aru into -eru. So 上がる becomes
Naomi: 上げる
Jessi: “to raise”
Jessi: Any more examples?
Yuichi: 下がる
Jessi: “to go down.” This becomes?
Jessi: 下げる
Jessi: “to lower.” Could you use them in a sentence, please?
Yuichi: エアコンの温度を下げる。
Jessi: “I lowered the temperature of the air conditioner.”
Naomi: 最近、気温が下がった。
Jessi: “The temperature has gone down these days.”
Naomi: 他にも、ペアの単語リストがPDFにありますので、必ずチェックしておいてくださいね。
Yuichi: あと、この他にもペアの覚え方のルールが載っているので、チェックしてみてください。
Jessi: Yes, don’t forget to stop by JapanesePod101.com and pick up the lesson notes. There are more pair verbs and other rules about changing intransitive verbs into transitive verbs in the PDF, so be sure to check that out.

Outro

Naomi: じゃあ、また。
Yuichi: さようなら。
