Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
母:(はぁ・・・)ただいま。
Jessi: (sigh) I'm home...
娘:お帰り。どうしたの?元気ないけど。
Jessi: Welcome back! What's wrong? You look down.
母:DVDが貸し出し中だったのよ。韓国ドラマ。
Jessi: The Korean drama DVD I wanted was rented out.
母:次のストーリーが気になって気になって、しょうがないのよ。
Jessi: I've been so curious about the rest of the story!
母:あの店は、借りられているDVDばかりで、本当に困るわ。
Jessi: The DVDs at that store are always rented out; I'm at a loss!
娘:だったら、ネットでDVDを借りれば良いじゃない?
Jessi: Then why don't you rent it online?
娘:お店には置いてない作品もあるって、友達が言ってたよ。
Jessi: My friend said that they have lots of titles that they don't have at the store.
母:インターネットで借りられるの?
Jessi: You can rent DVDs online?
娘:そうそう。自分が観たいDVDを予約すると、自宅に届くんだって。
Jessi: Yeah. She says that when you reserve the DVD you want to see, they'll deliver it right to your house.
母:本当に!返す時は?
Jessi: Really?! And what about when you have to return it?
娘:見終わったDVDをポストに入れるだけ。
Jessi: You just slip the DVDs you've finished watching in the mail.
母:へー便利ね!でも高いんでしょ?
Jessi: Wow, how convenient! But doesn't it cost a lot?
娘:そんなに高くないと思うよ。ちょっと、調べるね。
Jessi: I don't think it's that expensive. Let me look it up.
娘:あ、月額2000円で、八枚まで借りることができるって。
Jessi: Oh, it says for two thousand yen a month, you can rent up to eight DVDs.
母:お母さんがいつも借りているお店より安いじゃない。
Jessi: That's cheaper than where I always go to rent DVDs.
娘:最初の一か月は、ただで、借りることができるって書いてあるよ。
Jessi: It says here that you can rent DVDs for free for the first month.
母:すごい。今すぐ、登録して。
Jessi: That's great! Sign me up right away.
娘:いいよ。
Jessi: Okay!
娘:じゃ、私のアメリカのドラマも一緒に借りてね。
Jessi: Rent some American drama DVDs for me too, then.
母:ダメよ。自分で借りなさい。
Jessi: I don't think so. Rent them yourself.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: この、ネットでDVDを借りることができるのは、とっても便利ですよね。
Jessi:
Literally, Korean style?
Yuichi: はい、韓流ブームと言いました。
Naomi: 今はもう、韓流ブームとか流行とかではなくて、もう一つのジャンルになっちゃいましたね。レンタルのお店とかに行くと、韓国のドラマっていうセクションなんかがもうできちゃってますもんね。
Jessi: 韓流 refers to the surge in popularity of Korean pop culture in Japan, which includes dramas, movies.. oh, and music too. 韓国の歌手とかも日本で有名ですよね~。
Naomi: うん、すごい人気ありますよね!
Yuichi: そうですね。しかもあの、日本語ができる人が多いですよね。
Naomi: あ、似てるからでしょうかね、韓国語と日本語ね。みんな上手ですよね。ゆういちさんは、韓国のドラマ見てるんですか?
Yuichi: あの、この韓流ブームの時に、見たことがあります。おすすめですよ!
Naomi: なるほど。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Yuichi: 覗く
Jessi: to peek
Yuichi:「見る」という意味と似ていますね。でも、この「覗く」は、ちょっとだけ見るという意味です。
Jessi: 覗く is similar in meaning to 見る, but 覗く has a nuance of just glancing quickly. 例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 店の中を覗いた。
Jessi: “I peeked into the store.”
Naomi: 「覗く」は本当にいろいろな意味がある言葉なんですが、よく使われるのは、「ちょっと見る」とか「こっそり見る」という意味です。
Jessi: Right, this word 覗く actually has many different meanings, but the most common meaning is "to have a quick look" or "to peek."
Yuichi: 次の単語は
Naomi: 月額
Jessi: monthly amount, monthly fee. Let's break it down.
Yuichi:月
Jessi: month
Yuichi:額
Jessi: amount
Yuichi: この「額」を使って、daily sum とか annual sum と言うこともできます。
Jessi: So “daily sum” would be?
Naomi: 日額
Jessi: And “annual sum” would be?
Yuichi:年額
Naomi: 次の単語を見てみましょう。
Yuichi: 次の単語は、借りる
Jessi: to borrow
Naomi: 「借りる」 と「貸す」で、間違えやすいですよね。
Jessi: あー、そうですね。Be careful not to confuse 借りる "to borrow" and 貸す "to lend," because they’re really similar.
Naomi: ね、両方とも「か」で始まってますからね。
Jessi: はい。Exactly.
Yuichi: そうですね。例えば、「ジェシーに本を貸しました。」
Naomi: へー、何の本?
Jessi: 漫画を借りました。”I borrowed manga from Yuichi.”
Naomi: あ、本当に?
Jessi: Um… not really.
Yuichi: あの、本当は貸すつもりでした。
Jessi: あ〜、そうですね。
Yuichi: でも、あの、忘れてしまいました。
Naomi: じゃあ、まだゆういちさんは、貸していないんですね。
Yuichi: はい、これから貸します。
Naomi: で、ジェシーさんは、まだ借りてないんですね。
Jessi: はい。
Naomi: この「貸す」と「借りる」、間違えやすいんですが、ゆういち先生、何かいい覚え方はありますか?
Yuichi: う〜ん・・・本当に難しいですね。この「借りる」は “borrow” ですので、”r” が入ってますよね。なので、「借りる」の「り」が ”r” なので、それで、あ、同じだな、と・・・覚える方法ぐらいですかね。もしよかったら、そうやって覚えてください。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, you'll learn about a grammar structure called "noun modification". It sounds hard in grammar terms, but in plain language, you'll learn how to use a phrase to describe a noun. Some examples are phrases like "the person reading a book" or "the shoes I bought".
Naomi: これは、ビギナーのレッスンでも勉強しましたね。なので、復習していきましょう。
Jessi: Right, so let's review this grammar point known as "noun modification". First, how do you say "a person who reads manga"?
Yuichi: マンガを読む人
Jessi: Pay attention to the the word order. マンガを読む, 人. The explanation of the noun マンガを読む comes before the noun, 人.
OK. How would you say "a person who is reading manga"?
Yuichi: マンガを読んでいる人
Jessi: How about "a person who doesn't read manga"?
Yuichi: 漫画を読まない人
Jessi: Please remember that verb that comes before the noun must be in the informal form.
Yuichi: 例文お願いします。
Naomi: ゆういちさん、あそこでマンガを読んでいる人、知っている?
Jessi: “Do you know that person who's reading manga over there?”
Now to increase the politeness level, you say...
Yuichi: あそこでマンガを読んでいる人を知っていますか?
Jessi: “Do you know that person who's reading manga over there?” Please remember that Formal forms are not used in the phrase that comes before the noun.
Naomi: そうですね。なので「マンガを読んでいます人」はダメです。It has to be マンガを読んでいる人.
Jessi: Let's do some more examples. How do you say "the shoes I bought"?
Yuichi: 私が買った靴
Jessi: If there's a subject in the clause, it has to be marked by the particle が or の - it can't be marked by は.
Naomi: Right. 私は買った靴 is wrong, it has to be...
Yuichi: 私が買った靴
Jessi: or?
Yuichi: 私の買った靴
Jessi: Both are okay. But for this lesson, let's stick to が.
Next, how do you say "the book I read"(past tense)
Yuichi: 私が読んだ本
Jessi: What about "the comment I wrote"?
Yuichi: 私が書いたコメント
Jessi: Are you starting to get the pattern? How would you say "the shoes I bought"?
Yuichi: 私が買った靴
Jessi: Now let’s make it a bit longer. How would you say "the shoes I bought were expensive"?
Naomi: 私が買った靴は高かった。
Jessi: OK. Now it's time to practice. How do you say "comments that the listeners write"
[pause]
And the answer is?
Yuichi: リスナーが書くコメント
Jessi: Next, say "the comments that the listeners write are interesting."
[pause]
And the answer is?
Yuichi: リスナーが書くコメントは面白いです。
Jessi: And lastly how about "we read the comment that the listeners write"?
[pause]
And the answer is?
Naomi: 私たちは、リスナーが書くコメントを読みます。
Yuichi: そうですね。私たちは、みなさんが書くコメントを楽しみにしているので、是非、コメントお願いします。
Jessi: Just stop by Japanesepod101.com.,
Yuichi: click on comments,
Jessi: enter your comment and name,
Yuichi: and that's it!
Naomi: ゆういちさんとジェシーさんが書いたレッスンノートを読んでくださいね。

Outro

Jessi: All right. Well, that's all for this lesson.
Yuichi: さようなら。
