POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回は新聞のセールスのお話でした。新聞を購読してください・・・と頼んでいたんですね。購読は
Jessi: subscription
Naomi: 最近はみんな、インターネットでニュースを読むので、新聞を購読する人が減っているって聞きますよね。
Jessi: That's true, these days a lot of people read news online, and so the number of people who get actual newspaper subscriptions is going down. ちなみに、新聞の購読料っていくらなんですか?So how much does a newspaper subscription cost?
Naomi: 新聞社にもよりますけど、一か月2000円から4000円くらいですね。
Yuichi: へー、高いですね。
Naomi: うーん。その値段が高いと思うかどうかっていうのは、考え方によりますよね。だって、新聞記者は、一つの記事を書くのに、リサーチして走り回って、すごいエネルギーを使って書いているわけじゃないすか。
Yuichi: まぁ、確かに。
Naomi: でも、「高い」という人の意見もわかりますよね。ネットなら、ただですしね。
Jessi: あと、ネットだとゴミにならないから、いいですよね。
Naomi: 確かに。新聞より、インターネットの方が、環境にやさしい
Jessi: environmentally friendly
Naomi: と考える人もいますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is
Naomi: 学費
Jessi: tuition
Naomi: 漢字を見ましょう。最初の漢字は
Yuichi: 学 (school, learning)
Naomi: 二番目の漢字は?
Yuichi: 費
Jessi: expense
Naomi: 学校の費用。。。で「学費」です。
Jessi: So 学費 means "school expenses" or "tuition"
Yuichi: この、二つ目の漢字。「費」は、他にもよく使いますね。
たとえば、living expensesは?
Naomi: 生活費
Jessi: 生活 is living, and 費 is expense.
Yuichi: Food expenses は?
Naomi: 食事 meal の「食」を使って、「食費」
Jessi: 食 is food, and 費 is expense.
Yuichi: 次は?
Naomi: 間に合う
Jessi: "to be in time" "to be enough"
Naomi: 「間に合う」は二つの意味があります。一つは、「時間に遅れない」(to be in time)。 もう一つは、「必要なものは、全部ある。十分だ」"to be enough" という意味です。
Yuichi: 今回のダイアログの「間に合う」は「十分だ」という意味ですね。
Jessi: In this lesson's dialogue, 間に合う is used with the meaning of "to be enough"
Naomi: そうですね。奈々さんは
Yuichi: 間に合っています!
Naomi: と言っていました。新聞について話していますから、「新聞は、十分ある。」・・どういう意味かというと、「他の新聞を取っていますよ。」という意味です。
Jessi: Right. So what she means is that she already has a newspaper subscription.
Naomi: この「間に合っています」というフレーズは、「十分持っているので、いりません」と、セールスを断るときによく使います。
Jessi: This phrase 間に合っています is often used when turning down sales offers. It means that the speaker already has enough of the thing offered and doesn't need it. これ便利ですよね。使ってみます。
Naomi: では、最後の単語は?
Yuichi: 宅配便
Jessi: Door-to-door delivery service.
Yuichi: 「宅配便」 の他にも、「宅急便」と言うこともできます。
Naomi: そうですね。二つとも使われます。でも、本当は正しいのは「宅配便」なんですね。「宅急便」はヤマト運輸のサービスだけみたいですね、本当は。
Jessi: Un, I didn’t know this actually. So the words 宅急便 and 宅配便 are commonly used in daily life, but the correct word is actually 宅配便. Because 宅急便 is the name of a door-to-door delivery service provided by the Yamato Transport Company.
Yuichi: そうですね。

Lesson focus

Jessi: The focus of this lesson is using のだ for opening remarks said before making a request, getting information or advice, refusing something, inviting someone, etc. With these opening remarks, oftentimes you're explaining the background or context of what you're about to say. This のだ is mainly followed by kedo or ga (which mean "but"), which creates のだが or のだけど. Just as a reminder, out of these two, けど is more conversational. Here, let's practice the form used in conversation.
And as you already know, the の in のだ often becomes ん in conversation. So we use
Yuichi: んだけど、んですけど
Jessi: in this lesson. The other forms are covered in the PDF, so please check that out.
Naomi: では、お願いをするときに便利な「んだけど」「んですけど」の使い方を勉強しましょう。
Jessi: So first, let's look at the usage of んだけど or んですけど for asking favors.
Here's a sample sentence.
Yuichi: この漢字の意味が分からないんだけど、教えてくれない?
Jessi: I don't know the meaning of this kanji so... could you tell me what it is? So, here this んだけど is used as part of the opening remarks before making a request.
Yuichi: それでは、「んですが」を使った例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 「駅に行きたいんですが、道を教えてくれませんか?」
Jessi: I'd like to go to the train station, so could you tell me the way?
Naomi: 次に、断る前に使う、「んだけど」「んですけど」を勉強しましょう。
Yuichi: なおみさん、明日映画に行きませんか?
Naomi: あー、申し訳ないんですけど、明日はちょっと忙しいんですよ。
Jessi: Yuichi asked Naomi to go see a movie tomorrow, but Naomi refused with the opening remarks 申し訳ないんですけど.
Notice how she used んです to give her reason. 明日は忙しいんです。I'm busy tomorrow.
Naomi: You can also stop the sentence at んですけど。Like 申し訳ないんですけど。。。
Jessi: I'm so sorry but...
Naomi: それからもう一つ、誘う前に使う「んだけど」「んですけど」の練習です。
Jessi: Lastly, we're going to introduce the usage of んだけど or んですけど before an invitation.
Yuichi: ジェシー、映画のチケットあるんだけど、一緒に行かない?
Jessi: Hey Jessi, I have movie tickets - would you like to go to a movie with me?
These opening remarks are followed by an invitation.
Oh, that reminds me - I have a question for you guys. あの、なおみさんと、ゆういちさんに、質問があります。
Naomi and Yuichi: 何でしょう。
Jessi: 私の弟が初めて日本に来るんですけど、どこに行けばいいですか。
Naomi: うーん、どこだろう?築地?Tsukiji Fish Market とか。
Yuichi: あ〜いいですね。僕は、高尾山がおすすめですね。
Jessi: いいアイディアですね!When I asked my question, I used んですけど in my opening remarks asking for information. You can ask many questions using these opening remarks!
Yuichi: そうですね。是非、使ってみてください。たとえば、僕はリスナーのみなさんに質問があります。僕はあの、10月に海外旅行に行きたいんですけど、どこの国がおすすめですか。
Jessi: So, Yuichi is going to go on a trip in October overseas. Where do you recommend he go? Please let him know!

Outro

Jessi: Well, that's all the time we have for this lesson. See you next time!
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi: さよなら。
