Yuichi: こんにちは。ゆういちです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. In Japan, What Does Your Blood Type Say About You?
Yuichi: 皆さん、こんにちは。JapanesePod101.comへようこそ。今日も頑張って勉強していきましょう。
Jessi: Welcome to JapanesePod101.com, the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Japanese.
Naomi: 今回から新しいシリーズが始まりまですね。
Yuichi: シーズン4に引き続き、このシリーズは、ジェシーさん、直美さん、そして僕 ゆういち の三人で担当していきます。
Jessi: So this lesson is the very first lesson for Lower Intermediate Series Season 5. Your hosts will be me, Jessi, and Naomi, and Yuichi.
Naomi: では、ゆういちさん、今回のストーリーについて教えてください。
Yuichi: はい、今回は大学での会話です。
Jessi: The conversation takes place at a university.
Yuichi: 女子大生、つまり女の子の大学生、が二人話しています。
Jessi: In the conversation, we have two female university students.
Naomi: 今回の文法ポイントは何ですか。
Yuichi: 「たら」です。
Jessi: The -たら conjunction. As in?
Yuichi: 雨が降ったら、行きません。
Jessi: "If it rains, I won't go." All right. Let’s listen in on the conversation.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
さくら:愛、どうしたの?相談があるって。
Jessi: What's up, Ai? You said you had something to talk about.
愛:実は、サークルに好きな人ができて。
Jessi: Well, actually, there's someone I like in the club I'm in.
さくら:え?本当?どんな感じの人?
Jessi: Oh? Really? What are they like?
愛:それが、B型の人なの・・・。
Jessi: That's the thing; he's a blood type B person.
: ほら、B型の人って変わった人が多いでしょ。それに、彼、女友達が多いみたいだし・・・
Like, there are a lot of blood type B people who are kind of odd, right? And plus, he has a lot of female friends.
: どうしたら、私のこと好きになってもらえるかな・・・。
What can I do to get him to like me?
さくら:ふーん。彼、B型なんだ。
Jessi: Hmm…so he's a blood type B person.
: ちなみに、わたしもB型なんだよ。知ってた?
By the way, my blood type is B, too. Did you know that?
愛:ええ?じゃあ、さくら、同じ血液型だったら、B型の人の気持ちも分かるでしょ?
Jessi: Huh? So, if you're the same blood type, then you must understand how blood type B people feel, right?
さくら:バカなこと聞かないでよ。血液型で全部わかったら、苦労しないよ。(笑)
Jessi: Don't ask such stupid things! If you could understand everything based on blood type, you wouldn't be having this much trouble. (laughs)
: でも、ネットで検索したら面白いんじゃない。
But, it'd be interesting if you looked it up on the Internet.
: 話題づくりにもいいし。掲示板を見たら、いろいろな意見が読めるかもよ。
It'd give you something to talk about. If you looked at message boards, you'd probably be able to get a lot of different opinions.
愛:「B型の男性は、個性的で芸術的な女性が好きです。
Jessi: "Blood type B men like unique, artistic women.
: B型の男性は自由なので、束縛したら、嫌われます。」・・・か。
B-type men like to be free, so if you try and put restraints on them, you will get on their bad side."
さくら:ふーん。確かに、わたしも束縛されたら、嫌いになるかもしれない。
Jessi: Hmm…that's true. If someone were to try to control me, I don't think I'd like it.
愛:決めた!わたし、個性的な女になる。
Jessi: I've got it! I'll just become a unique woman!
さくら:えー!!
Jessi: Huh?!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回のトピックは「血液型」でしたね。日本人の友達が居る人は、必ず血液型を聞かれたことがあるんじゃないでしょうか。ジェシーさんはきかれたことありますか。
Jessi: はい、ありますね。でも、最初聞かれたときは、どうして血液型を聞くのか分からなかったです。I remember not understanding why I was being asked my blood type.
Naomi: そうですよね。血が欲しいのみたいな。
Yuichi: そうですよね。日本人はですね、血液型で性格が分かると思ってるから、まぁ、こうやって聞いたんだと思います。We believe that we can tell the characteristics they have by asking blood type. ちなみに、直美さんとジェシーさんの血液型は何ですか?
Naomi: 私はA型ですね。
Yuichi: あ、僕も同じです!
Naomi: あ、そうなんですか?
Yuichi: A型の人は、まじめですからね。
Naomi: あと、几帳面ね。
Jessi: きちょうめん?Methodical? Organized? That's a really useful word. Could you repeat it one more time?
Naomi: Sure. 几帳面。
Yuichi: ジェシーさんの血液型は何ですか。
Jessi: 実は、私は分からないんですよね、自分の血液型。
Yuichi: 知らないんですか?
Jessi: そうなんです。多分アメリカ人は自分の血液型知らないんじゃないですか。
Yuichi &Naomi: えー?!
Jessi: I don't think many Americans know their own blood type.
Naomi: 危なくないのかね。It's not dangerous? Not knowing the blood type?
Jessi: I don't think so! I mean, if you need to know it, of course you can quickly figure it out, but otherwise people have no idea.
Naomi: あ、そう。
Jessi: That's the norm.
Yuichi: なるほど。血液型を聞くことというのは、日本だけじゃなくて、韓国とか、ほかのアジアの国でも聞くみたいですね。だけど世界的にみると、かなりめずらしいみたいですよね。
Jessi: Yeah, so I think this is actually something that's pretty rare - it's only believed in a handful of Asian countries, including Japan and Korea.
Naomi: あと、今日のdialogueの中にも出てきたB型の人ですけど、B型の人の性格は、よく「好き嫌いが激しい」なんて聞きますよね?
Yuichi: 好きなものとか人は、あの、すごい大好きなんですけど、まぁ、嫌いなものとか人というのは、本当に大嫌いというようなことですね。
Jessi: Ah, so it's often said that blood-type B people are really picky?
Naomi &Yuichi: Mmm.
Naomi: Stereotype だと思いますけど。
Yuichi: ま、僕も結構好き嫌いが激しいと思うんですけど、ま、でもB型ではないですからね。
Jessi: So it's not for everyone. It doesn't apply to everyone.
Naomi: そうですね。ま、私も個人的には、血液型占いというのは、信じていないですね。科学的じゃないんで。Not very scientific.
Jessi: So you don't believe in blood type personalities because they're not scientifically proven?
Naomi: そうですね。
Jessi: なるほど。
Yuichi: でも、初めてだれかと会ったときに、会話をするために、ま、聞くというのはいいですよね。
Naomi: Conversation starterみたいな感じで使うのはとってもいいと思います。
Jessi: Ah, gives you something to talk about.
Naomi: そうそうそう。
Yuichi: 盛り上がりますね、日本人はね。
Jessi: そうですね。私も自分の血液型知りたいです。
Naomi: じゃ、調べてください!
Jessi: (笑)はい、調べてみます!
Naomi: 病院でね、調べられます。
Yuichi: そうですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 血液型
Jessi: Blood type.
Yuichi: 血液は bloodですよね。
Naomi: 「血」とも言いますね。
Jessi: 血液と血はどう違いますか。What's the difference between those two?
Naomi: Good question.
Yuichi: そうですよね。「血」は、よく日常生活で使います。血 is what you use in daily conversation.
Naomi: そうですね、で、血液は、専門用語, technical term, みたいな感じですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。だからたとえば、「転んで、膝から血が出た。」
Jessi: 'I fell down, and my knee was bleeding.'
Yuichi: は言いますけど、「膝から血液が出た」とは言いませんね。
Jessi: なるほど。
Yuichi: 変ですね。
Naomi: 次の単語は、「サークル」。
Jessi: 'Club', or 'team'. This is actually just the word "circle", taken from English.
Naomi: 大学にあるグループのことですね。例えば、テニスサークル、ダンスサークル、バスケットサークルとか。色々大学にもありますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。日本の大学には、放課後の活動が二つあって、ひとつは部活、でもうひとつがサークルです。
Naomi: ま、一般的に言って、部活というのは、練習が厳しいことが多いです。サークルは、もっと楽しい感じですね。楽しむことが目的。それがサークルですね。
Jessi: So I guess if you're talking about clubs that exist on campus, there are two kinds, right? So 部活, or activities that you do as part of a club, require a lot of tough practice. But on the other hand, a サークル or a circle, is more light-hearted and fun. Is that right?
Naomi &Yuichi: そうですね。
Yuichi: でも、あの、僕ちょっと最近面白いサークルを発見したんですけど。
Jessi: 本当?面白いサークル?
Yuichi: はい。アイスクリームサークル。知ってますか?
Naomi: アイスクリームサークル知らないですけど!
Yuichi: 皆でアイスクリームを作って、食べるっていう…それだけのサークルです。
Naomi &Jessi: へー!
Jessi: でも、楽しそうです!
Yuichi: ですよね!
Jessi: そのサークルに入ってみたいかも。
Yuichi: アイスクリームサークル。どうでしょうか、皆さん。
Naomi: そうですね(笑)じゃ、次の単語行きましょう!
Yuichi: 次の単語は「検索する」。
Jessi: 'to look up', 'to search for'.
Yuichi: 調べて、探すという意味です。これ、どんな風に使いますか。
Naomi: インターネットで検索する。
Jessi: 'I did a search on the Internet.'
Yuichi: 知りたいことをグーグルで検索する。
Jessi: 'I Google what I want to know.'
Yuichi: この「グーグルで検索する」を英語で言うと、どう言いますか。
Jessi: You could just say "to Google", as in "Google something". It's become its own verb already.
Yuichi: 日本語でも、似たことがありますね。
Naomi: あ、グーグルとかね。
Yuichi: 「グーグルで検索する」というのを、「ググル」とも言いますよね。
Naomi: ま、ちょっとね、カジュアルな感じがしますけどね。次の単語は「束縛する」。
Jessi: 'To restrain, to control'.
Naomi: この単語は、恋愛の話をしているときに、よく出てきますね。
Jessi: So this word is often used when talking about love or relationships.
Naomi: そうそうそう。 漢字を見てみましょう。
Naomi and Jessi: 束(bundle), 縛(to tie).
Jessi: So it literally means to tie someone in a bundle? (笑)
Naomi: Right!
Jessi: So some examples of this 束縛 could be a guy making his girlfriend call him every day or not allowing his girlfriend to talk at all with other guys.
Naomi: でも男の人は女の人を束縛するだけじゃなくて、逆もあります。
Jessi: Ah, so it can go both ways!
Naomi: ゆいちさんは束縛するんですか?
Yuichi: (笑)いや、僕は束縛しないですね。直美先生は束縛されるの嫌ですか?
Naomi: んんん…これどうなんでしょうね。ジェシーさん好きですか?
Jessi: えー、嫌ですね。
Naomi: ね!なんか、信用されてないのかなーという気がしちゃうかもしれないですね。
Jessi: Mmm, so it's like you're not being trusted, if someone is going to try and control you, or something like that.
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。
Jessi: なるほど。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this Lower Intermediate series, we'll start by covering conjunctions. First, we're going to take a look at the -たら conjunction in this lesson, which is made up of the -た form of a verb followed by ら. It basically means "upon completion of an action or event." So a clause that has -たら is talking about an action that occurs or may occur before another action. A lot of the time, it translates to "if" or "when". Could you give us an example?
Naomi: 日本に行ったら、富士山に行きたい。
Jessi: 'When I go to Japan, I want to visit Mt.Fuji.'
Jessi: Let's see how we came up with this. The -たら form is made by adding -ら to the informal past form, which is also called the た form. As in the example, the verb 行く becomes 行った in the た form. Then you attach ら. That becomes
Naomi: 行ったら
Jessi: "When I go". As another example, how do you say "When I grow up"?
Naomi: 大人になる is "to be an adult"or "to be a grown-up" So...大人になったら。
Yuichi: 大人になったら、海外に行きたい。
Jessi: When I grow up, I want to go abroad. You hear the first part of this phrase a lot when you ask little kids what they want to be when they grow up. Like, 大人になったら、何になりたい?'What do you want to be when you grow up?'
Naomi: そうですね。
Jessi: OK. How about adjectives?
Naomi: You add ら to an adjective in the past tense. For example 寒い means 'cold' and it's an i-adjective. The informal past is...
Yuichi: 寒かった.
Naomi: And add ら.
Yuichi: 寒かったら. 寒かったら、ヒーターをつけてください。
Jessi: 'If it's cold, please turn on the heater.'
Naomi: And for na-adjective and nouns, they have the same rule.
Jessi: Right. Change です into だった which is the informal past form of です, and attach ら. So let's take a look at the example.
Yuichi: 雪 is 'snow'.
Jessi: Add the informal past form of the copula and attach ら.
Yuichi: 雪だったら.
Yuichi: 雪だったら、家に居たい。
Jessi: 'If it snows, I want to stay at home.'
Naomi: 悪くないですね。That's not bad, is it?
Jessi: And also please note that the main clause, the one that comes after たら, is usually expressing someone's intention, request or an obligation.
Jessi: Now, let's practice. Yuichi is going to ask questions about different situations using たら. "If [blank,] what would you do?". So for these questions, please think of how you would answer.では、ゆういちさん、お願いします。
Yuichi: はい。最初は、ジェシーさんに聞きますね。アメリカに帰ったら、何をしたいですか。When you go back to the US, what do you want to do?
Jessi: んんん、そうですね。アメリカに帰ったら、地元の友達に会いたいです。
Yuichi: おー、いいですね。じゃ、直美先生、宝くじにあたったら、どうしますか。If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Naomi: んんん…旅行に行きます。
Yuichi: なるほど。どこに行きたいですか?
Naomi: エジプトに行きたいですね。
Jessi &Yuichi: いいですね。
Yuichi: じゃ、次、ジェシーさん。男だったら、何をしますか。If you were a guy, what would you do?
Jessi: はい。
Yuichi:男だったら、何をしますか。If you were a guy, what would you do?
Jessi: んんん…
Naomi: じゃ、難しいか?ゆいちさんは?女だったら、何したいですか?
Yuichi: 女だったらですか?じゃちょっと、化粧でもしましょうか。はい。ま、でもちょっと面倒くさいですけどね!
Jessi: Mm. But it would be nice to just try it once, I guess, right?
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: ま、でも女じゃなくてもできるよね? (笑)
Yuichi: いや、やっぱり女になったら、します! というわけで、じゃ、皆さんに、最後に質問をします。日本語が上手になったら、何をしたいですか。教えてください。
Jessi: So please let us know "What would you do if you were fluent in Japanese?"

Outro

Jessi: See you next time!
Naomi: さようなら。
Yuichi: じゃあ、また。
