INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. A slight possibility.
Yuichi: 今日のレッスンでは、可能性possibilityを勉強します。
Naomi: そうかもしれない。(Maybe you're right.)とかですね。
Yuichi: 今回は探偵と徳川さんという女の人が探偵事務所で話しています。
Jessi: 探偵というのはdetective です。なんだかおもしろそうですね
Yuichi: はい。探偵と徳川さんは初めて会いました。なので、ていねいな日本語をはなしています。
Jessi: In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about possibility using かもしれない.
The conversation takes place at a detective office. Detective X and Kimi Tokugawa are talking. Since it's their first time meeting each other, they're using formal Japanese.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
private investigator’s office – the doorbell rings
徳川キミ:ごめんくださーい。 探偵事務所Xはこちらですか。
English: Kimi Tokugawa:Excuse me, is this the office of Detective X?
探偵X:そうです。さぁ、どうぞ、こちらへおかけください。
English: Yes it is. Please come in and have a seat.
: 私(わたくし)、探偵Xと申します。どんな事件でも解決します。
I am Detective X, and I’ll solve any case.
: 今日は、どんなご用件ですか。
Now, what seems to be the matter?
徳川キミ:徳川キミと申します。: 実は、家(うち)の池にいた錦鯉がいなくなってしまったんです。見つけてもらえますか。
English: I’m Kimi Tokugawa. You see, the colored carp in my pond have disappeared. Can you help me find them?
探偵X:そんなの朝飯前ですよ。いついなくなったんですか。
English: That should be easy. When did they disappear?
徳川キミ:昨日、1週間の海外旅行から帰ってきたんです。
English: Yesterday, when I came back from a week-long trip abroad.
: 旅行の間にいなくなったのかもしれません。
They may have disappeared while I was away.
探偵X:誰かが、盗んだかもしれませんね。
English: Your fish may have been stolen by someone.
徳川キミ:犯人を捕まえてください。
English: Please catch the culprit.
: 昔、錦鯉を購入したときは、一匹100万円だったんです。
When I bought them some time ago, each colored carp cost me 1,000,000 yen
: 3匹で、300万円払ったんですよ。
I paid 3,000,000 yen altogether for those three fish!
探偵X:ええっ、錦鯉ってそんなに高いんですか!!
English: Huh, colored carp are that expensive?!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 一匹100万の錦鯉。錦鯉って高いんですね。
Naomi: 高いですよね。まさに泳ぐ宝石ですかね。
Jessi: A swimming jewel.泳ぐ宝石。。。面白い表現ですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。そう言えば、面白い表現といえば、「朝飯前」これも、面白い表現じゃないですか。
Jessi: あー、it's a piece of cakeね.
Naomi: 朝飯と言うのは「朝ご飯」、つまりbreakfast のことです。「前」と言うのはbefore 。「朝飯前」で、簡単な事だという意味なんですが、朝ごはんを食べる前というのは、みなさんこうおなかがぺこぺこですよね。おなかがすいていると、頭も働かないし、力も出ない。でも、そんなおなかがぺこぺこな状態でもできるくらい、それくらい簡単だよという意味みたいですね。
Jessi: So 朝飯前 literally means before breakfast. Before breakfast, you're probably not your sharpest, not at your best. So 朝飯前 means that even if you are in that kind of state, you can still handle it really easily. So that means it's really easy for you.
Yuichi: でも、最近、日本人は、あさめし、朝ごはんを食べないから、「朝飯前だよ」って,
ちょっと、おかしくないですか。
Jessi: These days a lot of Japanese people don't eat breakfast, so maybe is it kind of strange to say 朝飯前だよ?
Naomi: でも、「昼飯前だよ」とかって言えないですからね(笑)
Yuichi: そうですね。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。
Naomi: じゃ、単語に入りましょう。
Jessi: Let’s move onto the vocabulary.

Jessi: The next is:

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 今日のダイアローグには、漢字がたくさんあったので、漢字を詳しく見ていきましょう。
Jessi: In today's dialogue, we had a lot of words using kanji. Let's take a closer look at them.
Naomi: The first word is 探偵 (detective)
Yuichi: 探 は(To search) 偵 (Spy)
Yuichi: 「探す」という漢字を詳しく見てみましょう。
Jessi: So the left-hand radical is...
Yuichi: 「手」handですね。
Jessi: Then the upper right radical looks like...
Yuichi: 穴(hole)という漢字に似ています。
Jessi: Then the lower right radical is
Yuichi: 木(tree)なので、「木の穴に手を入れて探しているんですね。」
Jessi: うーん、面白いですね。So when you're trying to remember the kanji for 探す, imagine that "A hand is reaching through the hole in the tree."
Naomi: I think it's a nice mnemonic すごいですね。調べたの?
Yuichi: はい、調べました。
Naomi: へー。
Yuichi: あ、有難うございます。(一同笑)
Naomi: それから、この探偵というのは、英語だと private detective だとおもいますね。Police detectiveは、日本語では探偵ではないんですね。 Police detective is called 刑事 in Japanese.
Jessi: So もう一度お願いします。 private detective is 探偵 The police detective is?
Naomi: 刑事
Jessi: Ok.The next word is...
Naomi: 購入する to purchase
「購入する」と言うのは、「買う」と同じ意味です。
Yuichi: じゃ、えーと、「購入する」はいつ使いますか?
Naomi: これはビジネスの場面で使われることが多いと思います。
Jessi: 購入する is used mainly in business situations or in documents, right.?
Naomi: あっ、そうですね。書く言葉でもよく使われますね。
Jessi:
Jessi: I think that's the same as English because we say ‘purchase’ in English. It sounds a kind of more professional. Now so informal.
Naomi: なるほど。
Jessi: Something purchase is a good translation.
Yuichi: では、ちょっと、この「購入」の漢字を見てみましょう。
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: 購入の購をまずみますね。左側を見てください。この左側は、
Naomi: 貝shellfish
Yuichi: これは「かいへん」と言われています。貝は昔お金だったので、お金に関係するという意味ですね。
Jessi: うーん、面白いですね。So the left side radical is 貝, or shell. And that's because shells were used as money in ancient days.Next we have?
Yuichi: 事件( case) 用件 (business)
この二つの単語は、同じ漢字を使っていますね。
Jessi: The same kanji is used in these two words.
Naomi: 「件」のことですね。件 means matter case or item それから、この件と言うのは、カウンターとしても使うことできますよね。
Jessi: This 件 is used as a counter for matters or cases. For example, four items of business would be 四件の用件?(laughing)
Naomi: うまいですね。Tongue twisterと言うのかな。早口言葉みたいですね。 四件の用件!
Yuichi: そうですね。
Yuichi: この件という漢字を見てください。件の左側は、「人」を表します。「にんべん」と言われますね。
Jessi: So the left side radical stands for person. Then right hand side radical is
Yuichi: 牛(cow)と言うことですね。
Jessi: では、例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 今日、事件が5件も起こった。 (Five cases happened today.)
Naomi: 次は文法です。
Jessi: Let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Jessi: Today we'll look at how to express possibility using the phrase かもしれない (kamo shirenai), which becomes かもしれません (kamo shiremasen) in formal Japanese. Kamo shirenai is a phrase indicating that something is possible, but that the speaker is uncertain whether or not it is true, making it a weak form of expressing conjecture.Could you give us an example from this dialog?
Yuichi: 誰かが、盗んだかもしれませんね。
Jessi: Someone might've stolen it. Let's break down this sentence.
Yuichi: 誰かが(Jessi, someone) 盗んだ(stole)かもしれません(might)ね(confirmation sentence ending particle)
Yuichi: 「かもしれません」 のフォーメーションは簡単ですよね。
Jessi: Yes, that's right. Kamo shirenai is placed at the end of a sentence or clause, and follows informal speech. Let's check with the example from the dialog. How do you say "It rains."
Yuichi: 雨が降る
Jessi: Then attach かもしれません。 to show that you are not certain.
Yuichi: 雨が降るかもしれません It might rain.
Jessi: How do you say It might have rained.
Yuichi: 雨が降ったかもしれません
Jessi: Please notice that かもしれません part stays the same.
Naomi: 雨が降る かもしれません It might rain.
雨が降らない かもしれません It might not rain
雨が降ったかもしれません It might have rained
雨が降らなかったかもしれません It might not have rained.
Yuichi: それでは練習しましょう。
Jessi: Let's practice using this in some different situations.
Yuichi: 明日、台風が来るかもしれません。
Jessi: Yuichi said that a typhoon might come tomorrow.
If a typhoon came what do you think might happen?
Naomi: 電車が止まるかもしれないよね。The trains might stop.
Jessi: そうしたら、会社に来られないかもしれませんね。We might not be able to come to the office.
Naomi: ジェシー、何かちょっと嬉しそう(笑)
Yuichi: そうすると、誰も、会社に来ないかも知れませんね。
Jessi: Nobody might come to work tomorrow. 困りますね。(笑)
Naomi: 困りますね。
Yuichi: 嬉しそうだなあ。はい、じゃあ、今日はこのへんで。
Jessi: See you next time.
Naomi: じゃあ、また。
Yuichi: さよなら。
