Yuichi: もちろん、ジャックと和樹は友達なので、カジュアルな日本語を話しています。
Jessi: The speakers are friends, therefore the speakers will be speaking informally.
Yuichi:

Jessi: I’m home!
ジャック: お邪魔しまーす。
English: Please excuse my intrusion.
和樹の母: あら、いらっしゃい。チャック君ね。
English: Oh, welcome! You are Chuck, right?
和樹: お母さん。チャックじゃないよ。ジャック。間違えないでよ。
English: Mom, it’s Jack not ‘Chuck!’ Get it right!
和樹の母: ごめんなさいね。ジャック君。
English: I’m sorry, Jack.
: 着いたばかりで悪いんだけど、二人で、お使いに行ってもらえない?
I know you two just arrived, but can I ask you to run an errand for me?
ジャック・和樹: はーい。
English: Oh-kay…
(スーパー)
(At the supermarket)
和樹: ジャック、メモになんて書いてある?読んでくれない?
English: Jack, what does it say on the memo? Can you read it for me?
ジャック: えっと、玉ねぎ、にんじん、じゃがいも、豚肉、チョコレート。
English: Uh, onions, carrots, potatoes, pork and chocolate.
和樹: あっ、今夜はカレーだね!
English: Ah, sounds like we’re having curry tonight.
ジャック: えっ!またカレー?!
English: What? Curry again?!
: でも、なんで、カレーにチョコレートなんて入れるの?
But why would you put chocolate in a curry?
和樹: 隠し味だよ。隠し味。
English: Oh yeah, that’s the ‘kakushi aji.’ (secret ingredient)
ジャック: (・・・でも、かくしあじ?かくしあじってなんだ?)
English: (…but, ‘kakushi aji’? What is a ‘kakushi aji’?)
和樹: じゃあ、おれはチョコレートを探すから、ジャックは豚肉探してもらえない?
English: Well, I’m going to look for chocolate. Jack, would you look for some pork?
ジャック: オッケー。
English: OK!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 今日の会話の中に、「隠し味」という言葉が出てきましたが、この隠し味って何ですか。英語でなんて言います、隠し味。
Jessi: Hmm...hidden ingredientだと思いますね。
Naomi: あっ、hidden ingredient、隠し材料って言うことですね。
Jess: そうですね。
Yuichi: で、ダイアログにあったんですけれども、カレーの隠し味は、何が一番おいしいですか、ということで、インターネットでランキングを見つけました。
Naomi: えっ、祐一さん調べたんだ。
Yuichi: はい、調べましたよ、ちゃんと。
Naomi &Jessi: おー、すごいですね。
Jessi: So Yuichi found a survey on the internet that asked "What's the best hidden ingredient for curry?"
Yuichi: で、一位がりんご (The first one was apples)、2位が牛乳(Two was milk)、3位がにんにく(Three was garlic.)、4位がはちみつ(Four was honey.)、5位がしょうゆ(Five was soy sause.)、6位がチョコレート(And six was chocolate.) てわけで、今日出た来たチョコレートが第6位でした。
Naomi: なるほどねー。
Yuichi: 何か直美さんは、実際にカレーを作るとき入れますか、隠し味。
Naomi: カレーは色んな物を入れれば、入れるほど美味しくなると思うんですね。
Jessi: So Naomi thinks the more adds to it, the better becomes.
Naomi: そう。私はね、コーヒーを、インスタントコーヒーをちょっとだけカレーに入れます。
Yuichi: へー。
Jessi: A little ????(00: 06: 16) instant coffee.
Naomi: そう。そうすると、すごく美味しくなりますね。
Yuichi: あ、じゃあ、隠し味ですね、なおみさんのカレーの。
Naomi: はい。何かジェシーさん、隠し味とかありますか。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: カレーだけじゃなくてなくて、これに何々を入れると美味しくなる。
Jessi: あー、そうですね。でも、実は料理があまり...
Naomi: なんだー、意外。でも、ちょっと、嬉しい。(笑)
Yuichi: すごい。なおみさんが、すごい嬉しそうです。(笑)
Jessi: ジェシーが料理できないんだ!よかったー!(一同笑)
Jessi: Let’s move onto the vocabulary.
VOCAB LIST

Jessi: hidden ingredient
Naomi: 隠し味 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 隠し味 [natural native speed]

Jessi: to search/ to look for
Naomi: 探す [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 探す [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word we look at is 間違える (to mistake)
Naomi: サンプルセンテンスを祐一さんお願いします。
Yuichi: よく人を間違えます。
Jessi: I often mistake someone for someone else.
Yuichi: よく日本語を間違えます。
Jessi: I often make mistakes speaking Japanese.
Naomi: えっ、本当!祐一さん、日本語間違えます?
Yuichi: まあ、そうですね。えっ、間違えませんか、なおみさんも。
Naomi: 言い間違いますね。
Yuichi: あー。それです。言い間違いです。
Naomi: 言い間違いって何ですか?
Jessi: Maybe to say the wrong thing or to say the wrong word.
Naomi: 言い間違います。次の単語は、お使い (errand)
お はhonorific prefix)、使い is a noun form of the verb 使う.
Yuichi: そうですね。「誰かに、何かをしてもらいます。」 人を使います。
Jessi: So when you ask somebody to do something, you use people to do something for you.
Yuichi: よく子どを使いますよね、お使いに。
Jessi: So for examples, ‘Children often go on errands.’
Yuichi: 最後の単語は、玉ねぎ (onion) ジェシーさん、玉ねぎの形はどんな形ですか。
Jessi: うーん、丸いですね。小さいボールみたいな形。
Yuichi: そうそう。玉ねぎの玉って言うのは、ボールのことですよね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: 丸い形です。あと、日本人は他のネギも食べますよね。
Naomi: あー、長ネギですね。 長いねぎ。
Jessi: So like a long onion?
Naomi: そうですね。leakかな。 Spring onion.
Jessi: Oh, okay. 細くて、長いねぎですね。 It's long and thin. 長ネギ。
Naomi: そうです。普通、ネギって言うと、長ネギのことを指しますよね。
Jessi: So if you Japanese just say ネギ, you are talking about the leak.
Naomi: オニオンの事を言いたければ、
Yuichi: 玉ねぎ
Naomi: と、なるわけです。
Yuichi: だから、カレーには玉ねぎを入れます。でも、長ネギは入れません。
Jessi: So when you make curry, you put in onions not leaks.
Naomi: ここで発音のポイントがあります。
Jessi: There is one pronunciation tip from the dialog we’d like to mention.
Naomi: In the dialog, the mother said 「二人でお使いに行ってもらえない」 言って is the te-form of a verb 行く but it’s not いて whichi is the te-form of a verb いる.
Jessi: The grammar point is actually てもらえない which will explain later, but the point Naomi wants to make is te-form of 行く to go is 行って. There is a small prose in there where it’s the te-form of いる to exist or to be is いて. Can we have some sample sentences to compare two pronunciations?
Yuichi: 学校に行ってください。(Go to schoo.) 学校にいてください。(Stay at school.)
Jessi: So they sound similar but the meaning is different. So please be careful. Now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Jessi: Today's grammar point is "te form of a verb+ moraenai?," which is used to express a request. This expression is very similar to the one we studied in the last lesson ("te form of a verb + kurenai?"), which we use to make requests to persons in-group: family members, close friends and so on. However, "te form of a verb+ moraenai?," which we will focus on today, is a little bit more polite. As in today's dialogue,
Yuichi: 二人で、お使いに行ってもらえない?
Jessi: Can I ask you two to run an errand for me?
Naomi: ちょっと、形を見ていきましょう。Let's check the formation.
Yuichi: 行く
Jessi: to go, and te-form is
Yuichi: 行って
Jessi: And then attach もらえない?
Yuichi: 行ってもらえない?
Naomi: 二人でお使いに行ってもらえない?
Jessi: Let’s look at one more example. To lend is
Yuichi: 貸す
Jessi: te-form is
Yuichi: 貸して
Jessi: with もらえない
Yuichi: 貸してもらえない
Jessi: So if you forgot your wallet, you might ask your friend
Yuichi: お金貸してもらえない?
Naomi: You might want to add ごめん and say ごめん、お金貸してもらえない?(Sorry but, could you lend me some money?)
Jessi: In the previous lesson, we mention てくれない. Of course, you can use てくれない instead of てもらえない.
Yuichi: ごめん、お金貸してくれない? (Sorry but, can you lend me some money?)
Jessi: It sounds a bit more casual then てもらえない. And that’s all we have time for today.

Outro

Yuichi: それではみなさん、また次回お会いしましょう。
Naomi: そうですね。ジェシーさんに、是非メッセージをお送りください。
Jessi: See you next time. またね。
