Jessi: It looks like Jack and Kazuki are going to Kazuki's house.
Naomi: 和樹がジャックのスーツケースを車に入れようとするときに、何かちょっとした言葉を言っていましたよね。
Jessi: So when Kazuki put Jack's suitcase in the trunk, he uses an interesting word.
Yuichi: 「よいしょ」ってやつですね。
Naomi: よいしょ。
Yuichi: この言葉は、何かを持ち上げるときに使います。
Jessi: This word, yoisho is used when you lift something.
Naomi: うん、なんか、ちょっと力を必要とした時に使うのかな。
Jessi: Uh, probably something heavy, right?
Yuichi: うーん、そうですね。
Naomi: 祐一さんは、よいしょ って使います。
Yuichi: たまに、時々使いますね。まあ、あまり覚えてないですけど。
Naomi: どっちだ(笑)
Yuichi: でも、時々使います。はい。直美さんは使いますか?よいしょ。
Naomi: 私ねー、結構これ恥ずかしいんですけど、よく使うんですよ。あーよいしょ、あー着かれたとか。ジェシーさんは使います、これ。
Jessi: そうですねー、実はあんまり使わないですね。
Yuichi: ジェシーさんは、よいしょは、聞いたことがありますか?
Jessi: はい。聞いたことがあります。
Yuichi: 誰から、誰がよく言っていましたか。
Jessi: よく同僚が使っていましたね。

Naomi: そうですね。地震の時、家が揺れますよね。
Jessi: So when it has earthquake, the house shakes. The next word is.
Naomi: 免許 (license)

Yuichi: 僕それ大好きです。
Naomi: 美味しいですよね。
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: Let’s move on to the grammar.
Naomi: 次は文法です。

Lesson focus

Jessi: Today's grammar point is "-te form of the verb + kurenai?" In this series, we covered -te form of the verb + kureru. (Lower Intermdediate S4 #2 Giving and Receiving in Japanese-Kureru) Kureru acts as an auxiliary verb to indicate that somebody does a favor for the speaker or a person in-group. Today's grammar point, kurenai (negative form of kureru), indicates that the speaker is asking for a favor in a very casual way. As in the today's example,
Yuichi: 反対側を持ってくれない?
Jessi: Just grab the other side, will you?
Naomi: この「てくれない?」と言うのは、とてもカジュアルな言い方ですよね。 This expression is very casual, like used between close friends.
Yuichi: 親しい人以外には、使わないほうが良いです。 It's better not to use this phrase to anyone but someone in a close relationship.
Jessi: Let's look at an example.
Yuichi: ペンを貸してくれない?( Lend me a pen, will you?)
Yuichi: formation を見てみましょう。
Jessi: Let's check the formation.
日本語で、to lendは、なんと言いますか。How do you say to lend in Japanese?
Naomi: 貸す
Jessi: te-form is
Naomi: 貸して
Jessie: And then attach kurenai.
Naomi: 貸してくれない?
Yuichi: ペンを貸してくれない?
Jessi: Now please remember that this expression is only used among people in-group. Suppose Yuichi, Naomi and I are classmates. This kind of conversation might take place.
Jessi: あっ、辞書、忘れちゃった。祐一、辞書、貸してくれない?
Yuichi: 良いよー。はい。
Naomi: Jessi、その祐一の辞書、私にも貸してくれない?
Jessi: So I borrowed Yuichi's dictionary and so did Naomi.
Yuichi: やっぱ、いつもと違いますよね、話し方が。
Naomi: そうですね。私たちはオフィスで話すので、~してくれませんか?とか、ちょっと丁寧な言い方をしますね。
Jessi: When we have a conversation in the office, we are speaking a little bit more formally with くれませんか.
Naomi: じゃあ、祐一さん、そろそろレッスン終わらせてくれない。
Yuichi: OK. わかりました。それではまた。
Jessi: See you next time.
