INTRODUCTION
Naomi: なおみです。
Yuichi: 祐一です。
Peter: Peter here. Giving and receiving in Japanese. あげる.
Naomi: 今日も、前回のレッスンの続きですね。3回目のバレンタインデーのストーリーです。前回のレッスンでは くれる を勉強しました。
Peter: This story covers the 3rd part in a series. In the previous lesson, we learned an auxiliary verb kureru.
Yuichi: 今回は「あげる」を勉強しましょう。
Peter: In this lesson you will learn about the auxiliary verb あげる ‘to give’.
Yuichi: 前回のレッスンでは、圭介が浩二の家に行って、夏子からのチョコレートをあげました。
Peter: This conversation takes place at Koji's house. Keisuke went to Koji's house to deliver the chocolate from Natsuko.
Yuichi: 浩二はそのチョコレートをどうするのでしょうか。楽しみですね。
Peter: So in this lesson’s dialog, you find out what Koji is going to do with the chocolate. The conversation is between Koji and Keisuke.
Yuichi: 友達同士の会話ですから、とてもカジュアルです。
Peter: The speakers are friends, therefore the speakers/speaker will be speaking in informal Japanese.
Yuichi: それでは、聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE

(Koji's room)
圭介:去年も夏子ちゃんからもらったのか。本当にうらやましいな。
English: You got chocolates from Natsuko last year, too?! I'm so jealous, man.
浩二:実は、彼女、ちょっと性格が合わないんだよね。すごいおとなしいから、話が続かないんだ。
English: Actually, she's not my type. She's too quiet, so our conversations don't last very long. : 圭介は、今年誰かからチョコもらった?
Did you get any chocolates this year, Keisuke?
圭介:ゼロだよ・・・。
English: Zero...
浩二:じゃあ、夏子ちゃんのチョコレートも、もらってくれるか。
English: So, will you take Natsuko's chocolates for me?
圭介:え?いいの?いただきまーす。
English: Huh? Is it all right? Thanks! (chewing):
(もぐもぐ)うまい!!こんなおいしいチョコは初めてだ。
Mmm, these are good! These are the best chocolates I've ever had!
: …あ、でも、食べてあげないの?わざわざ作ってくれたんだよ。
.... But you're not going to have any? She made them for you, after all.
浩二:俺は、本命の冬花ちゃんのチョコだけでいいんだ。
English: I'm fine with just Fuyuka's chocolates. She's the only one for me.
圭介:ホワイトデーに冬花ちゃんに何か返してあげるの?
English: Are you going to give her anything on White Day?
浩二:冬花ちゃんを映画館へ連れて行ってあげるんだ。
English: I'm going to take Fuyuka to a movie.
圭介:そうか。。。まあ、本命がいるから、しょうがないか。
English: I see...well, there's not much to argue about if you're only into Fuyuka.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: どうやら、浩二は、あまり夏子のことが好きじゃないみたいですね。
Peter: It doesn't seem like Koji likes Natsuko very much.
Naomi: ふーん。めずらしい男の子ですよね。
Yuichi: えっ、どういうことですか?
Naomi: えっ、だって、おとなしいから、あんまり好きじゃないっていう人って、少なくないですか。おとなしい女の人の方が、人気があったりしませんか。
Yuichi: そう言われると、そうかもしれませんね。
Naomi: でも今日のダイアログの場合は、浩二君は好きな人が実はいるんですよね。
Peter: So in this dialog, Koji has somebody he likes.
Yuichi: 本命 がいるようです。
Naomi: 冬花ちゃん。
Peter: So Koji likes Fuyuka because he refers Fuyuka as 本命 which is someone’s favorite or someone you really like.
Yuichi: あと、直美先生。ホワイトデーのお返しに、浩二は冬花ちゃんを映画館に連れて行く、と言っていました。このお返しはどうですか。
Peter: So as a return gift, Koji is going to take Fuyuka to a movie theater. What do you think about that, Naomi-sensei?
Naomi: うーん、まあ、いいんじゃないですかね。
Yuichi: プレゼントをもらいたくないですか。
Naomi: あっ、プレゼントの方がいいね。
Peter: (laughing) So you’d rather have a present.
Naomi: そうね。
Yuichi: 映画は残りませんからね。
Naomi: そうそうそう。この映画、誰と見たんだっけな?とか。忘れちゃうからね。
Yuichi: いや、忘れないですけどね。
Peter: 一日ぐらい、なおみ先生の心よみたいですね。(笑)
Naomi: はい、単語を見ていきましょう。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: まず最初の単語は?
Yuichi: おとなしい (quiet, gentle, mild) 静か という意味に似ていますね。
Naomi: そうですね。でもおとなしいというのは、大体人に使う事が多いと思います。
Peter: So おとなしい is often used for talking about person’s personality. For example,
Naomi: おとなしい女の子 (a quiet girl) おとなしい性格 ( a quiet personality) . このおとなしいという言葉は、大人からきてると思うんですね。I think the word おとなしい is originated from the word おとな adult.
Peter: Really?
Naomi: And generally speaking , adults are more calm and quieter than kids, right?
Peter: So it’s not really a quiet definition, right? This something more…
Naomi: Calm. Little bit laid back.
Peter: Maybe it’s a bit mature.
Naomi: そうねー。でも、まあ、quietっていう意味で使われることが多いと思います。
Peter: But I would say possibly absorbing. So very understanding what’s going on in this situation. Not just quiet, just sitting there but a kind of I get a feeling of the person is absorbing the environment around them.
Naomi: そういう時もあると思います。It really depends on the situation but yeah, I think you are right.
Yuichi: だから、おとなしい掃除機、おとなしい夜、おとなしい公園 とは言わないです。
Peter: So that’s why you don’t usually say ‘a quiet vacuum’ with おとなしい or ‘quiet night’ with おとなしい. In that case, you have to use 静か, right ?
Yuichi: はい、静かな掃除機(quiet vacuum cleaner)、静かな夜(quiet night)、静かな公園(quiet park)と言う風に言います。
Naomi: 次の単語は。
Yuichi: わざわざ (taking so much trouble, deliberately, going out of one's way)
Naomi: わざわざありがとうございます。
Peter: Thank you for all the trouble you went through. And you know when you use a lot, combining the phrases from the previous lesson.
Naomi: 何?
Peter: わざわざ来てくれてありがとうございます。
Naomi: あー。
Peter: Thank you for taking the time to come down here.
Naomi: あの、自分が思っていた以上のことをしてくれたときとかによく使いますね。
Peter: So when someone does something way beyond you’ve expected and you want to show your appreciation. This is the phrase you want to use.
Naomi: そう, or you didn’t have to do that. みたいな感情が入ってると思います。次は文法です。
Peter: Onto the grammar point.

Lesson focus

Peter: Now, in the previous lesson, we covered an auxiliary verb, 「くれる」. In today's lesson, we focus on ageru as an auxiliary verb. When ageru ’to give' follows the -te form of another verb, it acts as an auxiliary verb meaning "to do something for someone else." Remember あげる something followed by the adjective marker あげる means to give something. てあげる means to give the action.
For example, to buy is...?
Naomi: 買う (and the te form is )買って
Peter: So if you want to say, I’ll buy something for someone.
Naomi: 買って・あげる
Peter: So te-form of 買う [買って+あげる] Let's add an object. Say, you want to buy chocolate for someone. The object is of course marked by Particle 「を」
Naomi: So, チョコレートを買ってあげる。(to buy chocolate for someone)
Peter: Now we take out the verb to buy we have
Naomi: チョコレートをあげる。
Peter: The previous sentence was ‘to buy chocolate for someone’.
Naomi: チョコレートを買ってあげる。
Peter: The verb that action of buying for someone. Now in this sentence structure
the receiver of the action is marked by 「に 」 So how can I say ‘ I buy chocolate for Yuichi.’?
Naomi:「祐一さんにチョコレートを買ってあげる。」
Peter: In today's dialogue, we had...
Naomi: 冬花ちゃんに何か返してあげるの。
Peter: What are you gonna give back to Fuyuka-chan?
Naomi: It’s a very spoken phrase, right? In a text book, for 冬花ちゃんに何か返してあげますか。
Peter: What are you gonna give back to Fuyuka? And this is because Fuyuka gave something to Koji. So he’s going to give something or his friends asking ‘What are you going to give back to her?’ The person receiving it Fuyuka is marked with 「に」 this something is marked by ?
Naomi: In this case, it’s a question. So usually the object has to be marked with を but in this case 何か
Peter: か something . And finally we have?
Naomi: 返してあげる。(to give back)
Peter: The act of returning something .
Naomi: The sentence ending particle の is at the end.
Peter: For emphasis as this was a question.
Naomi: はい。
Peter: Notice the intonation. Now before we head up, more important thing about あげる.
Naomi-sensei, in Japanese, there are many different social levels, right?
Naomi: はい。
Peter: Can あげる use between any of them and all of them ?
Naomi: It’s only in equal status.
Peter: So people of the same social status
Naomi: Or to the people who are lower than you.
Peter: You can use this.
Naomi: はい。
Peter: Auxiliary verb. If not we leave that another lesson but, check the PDF again for lots of very interesting information there. Let’s give you an example. ‘Yuichi-sensei, I’m sorry but you are lower status than me.’(laughing)
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: So let’s pretend you are thirsty. あれ、祐一、喉渇いた?Are you thirsty, Yuichi?
Yuichi: はい、カラカラです。(I'm diying of thirst.)
Peter: じゃあ、水を買ってあげるよ。Okay, I’ll buy you some water.
Yuichi: 有難うございます。
Naomi: Peter can say 水を買ってあげるよ because Peter has higher social status than Yuichi.
でも、祐一さんはピーターさんに、
Yuichi: 水を買ってあげるよ。
Naomi: 言えないですねー。Sounds really rude.
Peter: So more about that inside the PDF.
Naomi: じゃあ、また。
