POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。そう言えば、 ジェシーさんは、ホームステイしたことあるんですよね。
Jessi: はい、あります。
Yuichi: どんなことをしましたか。何か楽しかったことありますか。What did you do during your homestay in Japan? Was it fun?
Jessi: とても楽しかったです!ホストファミリーがいろいろなところに連れて行ったくれました。箱根にもディズニーランドにも行きました。
Naomi: 箱根は温泉ですよね?
Jessi: はい、温泉に行きました。
Naomi: ジェシーは、このダイアログに出てきた銭湯には行ったことあります?
Jessi: 銭湯には行ったことがないです。温泉だけです。
Yuichi: 僕は、銭湯結構大好きですよ。でも、あの、銭湯の数って、最近減ってきているみたいなんですよ。
Naomi: そうでしょうね。みんな家にお風呂がいまありますからね。
Jessi: The number of bathhouses which are 銭湯are decreasing these days because nearly all homes have a bathtub already. and also because super sentos are becoming popular. But, what is a super sento? What's super about it?
Yuichi: ま、僕は一番銭湯で好きなものがあります。
Naomi: 何でしょう。
Yuichi: 牛乳ですね。
Naomi: なんで?
Jessi: え、牛乳ですか!?なんでですか?
Naomi: 牛乳風呂?
Yuichi: 違います。牛乳に入るんじゃないです。銭湯に入った後、牛乳を必ず飲みます。
Naomi: あー。
Yuichi: すごい冷たい牛乳が美味しいんですよ。熱い銭湯に入った後、冷たい牛乳を飲むってのがね。
Naomi: 結構お風呂に入った後に、牛乳を飲む人って多いかもしらないですね。
Jessi: へー、初めて聞きました。
Yuichi: ビンに入った牛乳がとても美味しいんです。
Naomi: でも私、コーヒー牛乳の方が、好きかもしれないですね。
Yuichi: コーヒー牛乳も美味しいですね。あと、イチゴ牛乳とかもありあすよね。
Jessi: Interesting! I was aware of this but a lot of people like to drink milk after taking a bath at Sento. Regular milk, milk of coffee, strawberry milk.It usually comes with grass or bowl.Sounds good, though.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、お世話になる
Jessi: to be taken care of, to get help
Yuichi: この単語は本当によく使うので、知っている人が多いかもしれませんが、詳しく見てみましょう。
Jessi: First, let's take a look at when we use 「世話になる」.
Naomi: ホームステイをするまえに、まず、家族の人に、言わなくてはいけないのが、「お世話になります」
Jessi: Before you do a homestay, you say to your family お世話になります。I think it's best to think of it as "Thank you in advance".
Naomi: Tense は Non-pastです。
Yuichi: 「お世話になります」
Naomi: そうですね。で、ホームステイが終わったら、家族の人に、
Yuichi: 「お世話になりました」.
Jessi: Literally, I was taken care of. I think a better translation of お世話になりました would be "Thank you for your kindness. "
Naomi: そうですね。Thank you for everything.
Jessi: Right.
Yuichi: 是非使ってください。
Naomi: 次の単語は、
Yuichi: 家庭料理
Jessi: Home cooking.
Yuichi: ジェシーの家の家庭料理は何ですか?
Jessi: Hmm..そうですね… ビーフシチューとか、キャセロールかな
Naomi: キャセロール?
Jessi: キャセロールって言うのは、グラタンに似ているものです。パスタとか野菜が入った料理です。
Yuichi: なるほど。
Naomi: おいしそうですね。
Jessi: 日本の家庭料理と言ったら、何ですか?
Yuichi: やっぱり肉じゃがですかね。
Naomi: 次の単語は
Yuichi: なるべく
Jessi: preferably as possible This word is often used with another word, and it can be translated into "as such and such as possible" Could you give us an example?
Yuichi: なるべくたくさん
Jessi: as much as possible or as many as possible
Yuichi: なるべくたくさんお金を持ってくきてください。
Jessi: Please bring as much money as possible. Then how do you say something like "as soon as possible"?
Naomi: なるべく早く
Jessi: Can we hear it in a sentence?
Naomi: なるべく早く仕事を終わらせたい。
Jessi: I want to finish my work as soon as possible.
Yuichi: なるほど。そうなんですか。
Naomi: これ、例文ですよ。(笑)
Yuichi: 例文ですか。
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: じゃ、僕も例文いいですか?
Naomi: はい。どうぞ。
Yuichi: なるべく早くレコーディングを終わらせたい。これ例文ですからね。(笑)はい、例文です。
Naomi: でもま、3人とも思っているのは、なるべく面白いレッスンを作りたい。
Jessi: That's right. We want to make as interesting a lesson as possible.

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll focus on three different constructions that use the causative form.
We'll look at the te form of the causative plus あげる、くれる and もらう.
When you combine the causative with these helping verbs, the causative here indicates permission, meaning "to let someone do something", in almost all the cases. First, let's take a look at "te-form of the causative plus あげる".
What did we have in the dialogue?
Yuichi: ジョー君を楽しませてあげたい
Jessi: I want to let Joe have a nice time. Let's make this sentence more simple to explain the grammar.
Yuichi: OK.How about, 僕はジョー君を楽しませてあげる
Jessi: I'm going to let Joe have a nice time.
Naomi: The causative is 楽しませる ("to Let someone have fun" or "entertain" ) and あげる was added. The verb たのしませる was in te form.
Jessi: As we learned in Lower Intermediate season 4 lesson 3, when ageru follows the -te form of another verb, it acts as an auxiliary verb meaning "to do something for someone else." The one receiving the benefit is not part of the speaker's in-group.
Naomi: In this case ジョー君 is the person who receives benefit.
Jessi: Right. If the one who benefits is you or something in your in-group, you can use "the -te form of the verb + kureru," or "the -te form of verb+ morau"
Naomi: Right. If Joe entertained you, you can say...
Yuichi: ジョー君は僕を楽しませてくれた。(Joe let me have a nice time)
Naomi: or
Yuichi: 僕はジョー君に楽しませてもらった。(This also means Joe let me have a nice time)
Jessi: Please note that the particles used in these two sentences are different - there's a writeup in the PDF, so be sure to read that for more information.
Naomi: あと、くれる と もらう はレッスンの1から8までで勉強しましたね。
Jessi: By now you're already familiar with the usage and the construction of もらう くれる and あげる. If not please review Lower intermediate lessons 1-8. Now, let's go ahead and review the dialogue from this lesson.
Yuichi: The father said...
去年、太一はジョー君の家に泊まらせてもらったり、おいしいタイの家庭料理を食べさせてもらった
Jessi: Taichi got to stay at Joe's house, and they let him try some homemade Thai food
Naomi: 泊まらせてもらう(Jessi-Joe let my son stay at his place)and 家庭料理をたべさせてもらう(They let my son try some homemade Thai food) are the key phrases. The causative plus てもらう
Yuichi: And Joe said..すみませんが、電話使わせてくれますか?
Jessi: Excuse me, but would you let me use the phone?
Naomi: 電話使わせてくれる or 電話を使わせてくれる(Someone lets you use the phone) is also a key phrase.
The causative plus てくれる。
Yuichi: じゃ、少し、練習をしましょう。
Jessi: いいですね。
Yuichi: 皆さんには会いたい有名人がいますか?その人がなおみさんの友達だとします。
Jessi: Are there any celebrities you want to meet in person? Just assume the person is Naomi's friend.
Yuichi: 有名人ですね。
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: 僕は鳩山さんに会いたいです。
Naomi: 鳩山さん?首相の?
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: So Yuichi likes the primeminister of Japan, Mr. Hatoyama.
Naoim: えっ、好きなの?
Yuichi: 新しい首相なので、会いたいですね。
Naomi: あ、はい。
Yuichi: では、くれませんかを使って、なおみさんに頼んでみて
Jessi: So let’s try asking Naomi a question using くれませんか?as in "Naomi. Would you let me meet so and so?"
Yuichi: じゃ、僕が言ってみますね。直美さん、鳩山首相に会わせてくれませんか?
Naomi: やだ。あわせてあげない。
Yuichi: 何でも好きなものおごりますから。(Jessi-So he says, I'll treat you to anything you want to eat!)
Naomi: ほんと?何でもいいの?
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: じゃ、今度、あわせてあげるよ。
Jessi: Did you get that? Yuichi could have said 鳩山さんにあわせてもらえませんか instead.
Naomi: 意味は同じですよね They have the same meaning.
Jessi: OK. Well, that's all for this lesson.
Naomi: And series このシリーズも最後ですね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: じゃ、やっぱり最後に一言、言わせてください。
Jessi: え、どうしようかな。(笑)
Naomi: ジェシー意地悪~。(笑)You should let him say something!
Jessi: いいですよ。言わせてあげます。(笑)OK. I'll let you say something.
Yuichi: はい、みなさん。Lower Intermediate series S4どうでしたか?またこれからシーズン5の方もありますので、また来年というわけで、良いお年を。
Naomi: じゃ、また来年お会いしましょう。
Jessi: Bye everyone. See you next year!
