English: Yeah, around 20 or so. I can't eat them all, so can you eat some for me?
: あまりチョコを食べないことにしてるんだ。ニキビができちゃうから。で、用は何?

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: バレンタインデーは2月14日ですが、日本では 女の子が、男の子にチョコレートをあげます。
Peter: In Japan, girls give boys chocolate on February 14th. What about boys? Do any boys give chocolate to girls?
Yuichi: No.Never.
Naomi: 普通は、女の子だけですね。あのー、チョコレートとかあとは、プレゼントとかを男の子にあげます。
Peter : So usually girls give the guys.
Naomi: そうそうそう。あっ、去年わたしピーターさんにチョコレートをもらいました。
Peter: そうですね。
Yuichi: そうなんですか。
Naomi: はい。ごちそうさまでした。
Peter: どういたしまして。Last year, I gave all the women in the office chocolate. その時、コンビニでチョコを買いました。
Naomi: コンビニだったの!
Peter: そうですね。
Naomi: なーんだ、コンビニで買ったの。
Peter: そうですね。
Naomi: はあー。残念。
Peter: I should’ve bought a better place not convenience store. しかし、そのレジの人 the person working register 何でチョコ買ってますか。って。そして、私が、あー私は、あのー女性にあげると答えたら、レジの人がうらやましがってた。
Naomi: あー。
Peter: So because I told her that I was buying chocolate to give to women. She was so jealous. 彼女がいいなあー私ももらいたいなあーと言われました。 So but Naomi-senseiも幸せどころか、がっかりしています。Like a Oh, it’s just a コンビニ chocolate.(laughing)
Naomi: 失礼しました。(笑)じゃ、単語に行きましょう。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: まず、最初の単語は?
Yuichi: できる (to appear, to occur)
Peter: できる has many many meanings. And you probably recognize as auxiliary verb to be able. But it also means for something to appear and the conversation we had
Naomi: ニキビができる (to get a pimple/ acne) できものって言うのもありますよね。
Peter: Something that appears like a ちょっと気持ち悪いですか like a boil or blotch. Something forms on your skin.
Naomi: そうそうそう。でき が でき comes from the verb でき るand もの が things ですよね。できたもの で できもの なんですね。
Peter: It’s also kind comment in the movies or dramas they’re going to the hospital and there’s できもの.
Naomi: あー、できものができたんですけど、ちょっとリダンダンシーに聞こえますけど、言いますね。
Peter: そうですね。
Naomi: It sounds bit redundancy but we say it. できものができました。
Peter &Yuichi: (laughing)
Naomi: And おできというものもありますね。 Honorable appearing things.
Peter: おでき?
Naomi: おでき。
Peter: 聞いたことないです。
Naomi: おできができました。言いますよね?
Yuichi: 言いますね。でも、でき とは言いませんね。
Naomi: おでき
Peter: Naomi-sensei, なかなか素敵なおできですね。
Naomi: ありません、おできは。
Peter: でも、日本語は…
Naomi: 正しいですよ。
Peter: やりました。やったー!よかったですね。
Naomi: 次の単語見ていきましょう。
Yuichi: にきび(pimple/acne)
Naomi: にきびというのは、おでき とか できもの のことですよね。You can call にきび as おでき or できもの.
Yuichi: にきびって、何歳になるとできなくなるんでしょうね。
Peter: So how old do you think you have to be for pimples to stop appearing?
Naomi: 知らない。(笑)
Peter: 丁寧ですね。あのー、ずっとあるんじゃないですか。
Yuichi: そうですかね。はい。
Naomi: (笑)
Yuichi: それだけです。
Peter: Okey. Next word.
Yuichi: あがる (to come in, to go in)
Peter: 入る とどう違いますか? Would this word あがる have different meaning from はいる? Because はいる is also enter. お入りください。
Yuchi: 日本の家の玄関はちょっと高いところにあります。 だから、 家に入ることを あがるということもあります。
Peter: So houses do with the front of Japanese houses. It’s like a step up, so that’s where this phrase are originate from あがる means to raise.
Naomi: だから、部屋に入る 家に上がる が一番一般的な言い方だと思います。So ‘please come in’ would be 入ってください 。or あがってください。Depending on where you are entering.
Peter: 今回の話の中で、私にとって一番面白かったのは、あがれ と おじゃまします。
Naomi: あー、友達なのに?
Peter: Yes. The most interesting for me in this conversation was あがれ and おじゃまします。like Naomi-sensei said even in friends.
Yuichi:Keisuke said おじゃまします, right?
Peter: Which is very very polite and something you should say everytime you visit your friend’s place or somebody’s place of dwelling.
Yuichi: He’s saying to his parents
Naomi: そう。 お父さんとかお母さんに言ってる可能性も高いよね。
Peter: じゃあ、こうじさんのご両親がいなかったら、彼は何を言うでしょうね。
Naomi: Good question! I think he still use おじゃまします.
Yuichi: Me,too.
Naomi: 私はいつもおじゃまします。
Peter: 私もいつもおじゃまします。
Yuichi: ぼくも、おじゃましますを使います。
Peter: So it was very interesting. あがれ is like a command but Koji is such a good friend ‘ Come on in’ uh, I’m going to come in now. It’s very interesting for me.
Naomi: では、文法に入っていきましょう。
Peter: On to the grammar lesson.

Lesson focus

Peter: In the previous lesson, we learned "giving and receiving verbs," such as
Yuichi: kureru, ageru and morau.
Peter: Now, in the next three lessons, including this one, we are going to look at these verbs acting as auxiliary verbs, what that basic means is verbs that modify other verbs. In this lesson, Naomi-sensei focuses on...
Naomi: くれる
Peter: Now, in the previous lesson, we recovered くれる. This means "to give", and it’s used when the receiver is the speaker, or someone in the speaker's in-group. This is the key to this verb. Now one kureru follows -te form of another verb, -kureru acts as an auxiliary, basically implying that the doer performed that action for the sake of the speaker. OK, it’s kind of compact things here. くれる alone means to receive something. -te kureru means to receive and action. As we’ll see and the next use examples.Naomi-sensei、お願いします。
Naomi: 笑ってくれる (to smile or laugh for me.)
Peter: This is main point くれる doing for the speaker or someone speaker’s group. In this case 笑う to smile is a favorable action . In the dialog, Koji was asking Keisuke to eat a chocolate for him because he doesn't want to eat it.
Naomi: こうじ、何て言ってました?
Yuichi: ちょっと食べてくれる
Peter: Could you eat some for me? In the dialog, Koji also said
Yuichi: 彼女は、去年もチョコレートを作ってくれたんだよね。
Peter: She made chocolate for me last year too. This つくってくれた to give the action of making.
Naomi: なので、浩二さんはなつこさんを嫌いじゃないですよね。I don’t think Koji hate Natsuko.
Peter: Which is in Japanese means? He doesn’t like her.
Naomi: えっ?
Peter: 嫌いじゃない means
Yuichi: 好きじゃない
Peter: だよねー。
Naomi: まーでも、the reason I said is because he was saying チョコレートを作ってくれた It sounds like he appreciated it.
Peter: ちょ、ちょっとすみません。あのー、賛成できません。He’s just been in nice. Like you can translate this sentence as "she made some chocolate for me and I appreciate it." But I think…
Naomi: He just saying?
Peter: Yeah, he’s just been in nice.
Naomi: あ、そうかな。
Peter and Yuichi: (laughing)
Peter: 男の心かな。
Yuichi: 優しい男の子ですね。
Peter: そうですね。That's why I said 誘ってくれてありがとうございます。 Thank you for inviting me.
Naomi: よく、 てくれて、ありがとうございますっていう風に使われますね。例えば、Thank you for inviting me. 誘ってくれてありがとうございます。
Peter: Thank you for inviting me. You see the structure. The -te form of the verb plus くれてありがとうございます used very very often. And this is a really useful expression you can add to your tool box to really take you Japanese to the next level.
Naomi: このフレーズは覚えておくと便利だと思いますね。みなさん、いつも聞いてくれてありがとうございます。
Peter: Thank you for listening everyone.
Yuichi: あっ、ピーターさん今日はスタジオに来てくれてありがとうございます。
Peter: Yeah,yeah,yeah,どういたしまして。(一同笑)
Naomi: I think the reason why Youichi said 来てくれてありがとうございます to Peter. Yuichi just wanted to show the comparison between 来てくれて and 聞いてくれて.
Peter: So based on the verb くる and きく and this one is for a long time I didn’t really pronouce the long vowel in te-form of きく meanig ‘to listen’. So it’ always sounds like I was saying 来て come 来てくれてありがとうございます Thank you for the coming. But what I want to say 聞いてくれてありがとうございます Thank you for listening.
Naomi: はい。リスナーの皆さん、今日もjapanesePod101.comを聞いてくれてありがとうございます。
Peter: ありがとうございます。
Yuichi: ありがとうございます。
Naomi:
