POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: ニュース番組のお話なので、今回のダイアログは、ちょっとむずかしかったかもしれませんね。必ず、レッスンノートをチェックしてくださいね。
Jessi: This dialog is from a TV news program, so there might be some difficult parts in it. So please make sure to download the lesson notes and check the dialog transcript.
Yuichi: learning centerのラインバイラインオーディオでアナウンサーのスピーチをリピートするのも良い練習です。
Naomi: そうですね。
Jessi: Right. Using the line-by-line audio feature to play the newscaster's lines over and over would be a great exercise too.
Yuichi: さて、今日は「弁当男子」がトピックですね。弁当男子って言葉知ってましたか。
Jessi: 私、知ってました。
Naomi: ほんとう!
Jessi: はい。
Naomi: 私知らなかったです。
Jessi: ほんとですか!
Yuichi: この弁当は(lunch box, packed lunch)で、男子は男とか男性(man)という意味ですね。
Jessi: 何が違うんですか?男、男子、男性
Yuichi: ま、基本的には同じですが、この男子って言うと、少し可愛い感じがしますね。
Naomi: そうですね。男性というと、大人の男という感じがしますね。男よりも、男性の方が、丁寧な言葉です。男子というと、漢字を見ると、子供という漢字が入っていますので、基本的には、男の子という意味なんですね。男子っていうのは、学校で、よく使われます。「男子集まれ!」とか、「先生、男子がうるさいので困ります」とか。
Yuichi: あー、なるほど。
Jessi: 勉強になりました。
Yuichi: そう言えば、JapanesePod101のオフィスには、弁当男子っていますかね。
Naomi: お弁当を持ってきている人はいますね。
Jessi: いますね!We have some 弁当男子 in the JapanesePod101 office. あと、お弁当を買いに行く人もいますよね。
Naomi: そういう人たちも、弁当男子?コンビニでお弁当を買うって、弁当男子?
Yuichi: いいえ、弁当を自分で作らないと、弁当男子ではありません。
Naomi: いろいろ難しいんだね。(笑)
Yuichi: はい。自分で弁当を作って、会社に持ってそれを食べなくてはいけないということですね。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。So men who buy lunch at a store are not 弁当男子, because 弁当男子 only refers to men who make a lunch at home and bring it into the office. ちなみに、私はよくお弁当を持ってくるんですが、弁当女子は言えますか? I’ll almost always make lunch at home and bring it to work. So can I be called a 弁当女子?
Yuichi: 弁当女子うーん、その言葉はあまり聞かないですね。
Naomi: で、実はこれは、次回のレッスンで、ちょっとトピックになっているんですね。なので、次回のレッスンを楽しみに待っててください。
Yuichi: お楽しみに。

Naomi: 単語を確認しましょう。最初の単語は?The first word is?
Yuichi: 流行る
Jessi: to be in fashion, to become popular
Yuichi: たくさんの人がしていて、とても人気があるということですね。
Jessi:I think this verb is often used in the present progressive. The present progressive is...
Naomi: 流行っている。
Yuichi: 日本では、弁当男子が流行っている。
Jessi: Bento danshi are becoming a trend in Japan.
Yuichi: この「流行る」という言葉ですが、病気などよくないことがたくさんの人に起こることにも使えます。
Jessi: This word can also be used for bad things that spread, such as diseases.例文をお願いします。
Naomi: インフルエンザが流行っている。
Jessi: The flu is going around.
Naomi: 漢字は当て字irregular reading ですね。流行(Jessi; Trend)という漢字を使っていますが、読み方は「はやる」です。
Yuichi: それでは次の単語おねがいします。What's the next word?
Naomi: 方
Jessi: person
Naomi: 人ということですね。でも「方」のほうが丁寧な言い方です。
Yuichi: この人は誰ですか。
Jessi: Who is this person?
Naomi: Now,this sentence is polite, but if you want to be even more polite...
Yuichi: こちらの方はどなたですか。
Jessi: Please notice how この人 becomes こちらの方. And 誰 becomes どなた
Can we hear the sentence again?
Yuichi: こちらの方はどなたですか。
Jessi:Who is this person?
Naomi: 次の単語です。The next word is 節約
Jessi: saving, economizing. When used as a verb, 節約する, it's like "to cut down on".
Yuichi: お金とかを使わないようにすることです。
Jessi:お金を節約するために、何をしますか。
Naomi:うーん。私は、食費の節約をします。食費 is food expense.
Yuichi: あ、じゃ、弁当男子とおなじですね。
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: このダイアログでも、弁当男子が食費を節約するために、弁当を作っていますと言っていました。
Jessi: Right. In this lesson's dialog, the bento danshi cut down on food costs by making their own lunch.
Yuichi: ジェシーさんは、何を節約しますか。
Jessi: そうですね、食費も節約します。あと、電話代の節約もします。I try and cut down not only on food but also on my phone bill.
Yuichi: なるほど、電話代を節約するのは、どうやってしているのですか。 How do you save on your phone bill?
Jessi: 携帯電話をなるべく使わないで、スカイプを使いますね。
Naomi: ああ、なるほどね。スカイプだと、電話代タダですからね。あの、チャットの場合は。
Yuichi: 節約できますね。
Naomi: はい。では、文法です。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we will go over 「そうだ」. そうだ is an auxiliary adjective that expresses some conjecture, like a guess, that the speaker makes about the present or the future. It is usually based on what the speaker sees or feels. Could you give us an example from the dialog?
Yuichi: この流行はこれからも続きそうです。
Jessi: It looks like this trend will continue on in the future.
Naomi: ジェシーさん、この「そうだ」は、英語で何ですか? How would you translate this そうだ
Jessi: Maybe... it "looks like" "seems like" or "feels like". It's based on what the speaker actually sees or feels.
Yuichi: それでは次に、フォーメーションを確認してみましょう。
Jessi: Let's take a look at the formation closely. This lesson's そうだ is different from the one we learned in lesson 17 which expresses hearsay, or something the speaker heard about. So, the formation for this そうだ is also different from that of the other そうだ. When そうだ (conjecture) follows verbs, we change the verb into its masu-stem. For example
Naomi: 思い出す
Jessi: Change it into masu form.
Naomi: 思い出します
Jessi: Take off masu.
Naomi: 思い出し
Jessi: And attach そうだ.
Naomi: 思い出しそうだ。
Jessi: I feel like I'm about to remember. This is kind of like when we say something is on the tip of your tongue.
Yuichi: よくありますよね。思い出しそうなとき。あれ、何て言うんだっけな、あれって言うような感じですね。
Naomi: はい。
Jessi: Right, there are often times when we feel like we're on the verge of remembering something, but we can't.
Yuichi: 次は、いadjectiveの形を勉強しましょう.
Jessi: Let's take a look at the formation for i-adjectives.
For i-adjectives, drop the final i and attach そうだ. Let’s do the example. How do you say "kind" in Japanese?
Yuichi: やさしい
Jessi: Then drop the i.
Yuicih: やさし
Jessi: Attach そうだ.
Yuichi: やさしそうだ
Naomi:彼は、優しそうだ。
Jessi: He looks kind.
Naomi: There is one i-adjective that you have to be careful of - the word "kawaii" which means cute.
Jessi: That's right. For example, "She looks cute." You shouldn't say
Yuichi: 彼女は可愛そうだ。
Jessi: This means "poor her", like you feel pity for her.
Naomi: そうですね。違う意味になるので、気をつけてください。「可愛そう」is in na adjective meaning pitiful.
Jessi: So instead if you wanted to say, she looks cute, you would say
Yuichi: 彼女は可愛い。
Jessi: Let's move on to the formation for na-adjectives'. そうだ follows na-adjecitve without the na. Can we have a sample sentence, please?
Yuichi: この電子辞書、とても便利そうだ。
Jessi: This electronic dictionaries seem really useful.
Yuichi: じゃ、最後になぞなぞをしましょう!
Naomi: すごいいきなりな感じですけど。(笑)
Yuichi: ま、そういわないで。I'm going to ask a riddle. じゃあ、行きますよ。「パンだけど、そのパンは食べることができません。そのパンは何でしょう。」What kind of bread can you NOT eat?
Naomi: あー、このなぞなぞ有名ですよ。聞いたことあります。でも、思い出せない。
Yuichi: 思い出せないですか。
Naomi: うん、思い出しそうですけど、ちょっと思い出せないですね。
Yuichi: なおみさんは、思い出せそうで、思い出せません。
Naomi: 思い出せないです。
Yuichi: はい。ジェシーさんはどうですか?
Jessi: うーん。でも、分かりそうです!ちょっと待ってください。I feel like I know it...あ、もしかして、フライパン!!!Frying pan?
Yuichi: 正解です!フライパン、固いですからね。ジェシーさん、よくできました。
Jessi: Yey! I
Naomi: 次のレッスンで、conjectureの「そうだ」と hearsayの「そうだ」を比べますので、このレッスンでは、conjectureの「そうだ」をきちんと理解してくださいね。
Jessi: If you still feel a little unclear as to how both そうだ expressions are different - don't worry! In the next lesson we'll be comparing both of these expressions - the そうだ meaning conjecture and the そうだ meaning hearsay. So please make sure to read the lesson notes so that you fully understand the usage!
Jessi: See you next time.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi: それでは。
