Jessi: 私は、漬物が食べられません。
Naomi: へー、漬物だめですか?
Jessi: ダメです。
Yuichi: 匂いがダメですか?
Jessi: いや匂いじゃなくて、味が…ちょっとね。
Naomi: へー。私、ないですね。日本食は何でも多分好きです。祐一さんは?
Yuichi: 実は、僕も、納豆が嫌いです。
Naomi: あっ、嫌いなんだ。私もう大好き、納豆。
Yuichi: ごはんと納豆一緒に食べますか?
Naomi: いやいやいや。納豆だけで食べるくらい好きです。
Jessi: そうなんだー。
Naomi: 大好き大好き。で、ちなみにこのお話、祐一さんが書いてくれたんですよね。
Yuichi: はい。実は、インターネットで、「外国人が嫌いな日本食」のランキングがありました。それを見て、この話を考えました。
Jessi: Oh, so you found a ranking of Japanese food that non-Japanese people don't like on the internet.
Yuichi: はい。4つの日本の食べ物についてどれが食べられませんか、と聞いていました。その4つの食べ物は、生卵・刺身・納豆・味噌汁でした。どれが一番人気がなかったと思いますか。
Jessi: There were four candidates in the question; Raw egg, raw fish, fermented soybeans and miso soup. Which do you think is the least popular?
Naomi: うーん、私大好きですけど、でも、やっぱり納豆が一番人気ないと思います。
Yuichi: 正解です!納豆が一番人気がなかった。
Jessi: Natto was the least favorite Japanese food.
Yuichi: ということです。リスナーのみなさんの食べられない日本食は何ですか?是非コメントに書いてください。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is うまい(delicious, good)
おいしいいう意味です。でも、この「うまい」は、とてもカジュアルな言い方ですね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Jessi: This is the really casual word for おいしい which means delicious.
Yuichi: このケーキうまい!
Jessi: This cake is good!
Naomi: あの、カジュアルな時は良いですけど、フォーマルなときには使わないでください。
Yuichi: ちなみに、うまいの反対語は何でしょう?
Jessi:うまくない?(笑)
Naomi: そうですね。うまくないでも良いですけど、もうちょっと、ひどいのが「まずい」taste awful
Yuichi: このケーキはまずい。
Jessi: This cake tastes awful.
Yuichi: この「うまい」と「まずい」の二つの言葉は、とってもカジュアルなときや驚いたときに、「い」を取って、「うま!」とか「まず!」といいますね。
Naomi: 言いますね。「うま!」とか「まず!」
Jessi: I hear a lot. そうですね。If you're really surprised at the taste of the food, you could take away the final -i from the adjectives and say うま!or まず!These are really casual though, so be careful when and where you use them.
Yuichi: 実際によく聞きますね。
Naomi: あと、「うまい」って言葉ですが、 うまいには、上手 skillfulという意味もありますね。ジェシーさんは歌が上手いそうです。
I heard that Jessi is a good singer.
Jessi: えー、誰がそんなこと(笑)
Naomi: では、次の単語を見てみましょう。
Yuichi: 常連 (regular customer)
Naomi: よく来るお客さんという意味ですね。
Yuichi: じゃあ、漢字を見てみましょう。
Naomi: 最初の漢字は いつもという意味の漢字
Yuichi: 常
Jessi: always
Naomi:次の漢字は
Yuichi: 連
Jessi: To take along, to join
Naomi: ま、グループというような意味ですかね。ですから、常連っていうのは、いつも一緒のグループ、いつもお店に来るお客ということなんですね。
Yuichi: ところで、二人はどこかのお店の常連ですか。
Jessi: So are there any shops that you are a regular at?
Naoi: 常連って、どのくらいから、常連になるんでしょうね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: 二週間に一回でも常連?
Yuichi: やっぱり、1週間に3回ぐらい。
Naomi: えっー!ほんとー!
Yuichi: じゃ、1週間に1回にしましょう。1週間に1回必ず行くところはありますか?
Naomi: コンビニ?
Jessi: あー。(笑)
Naomi: 次の単語は、何でしょう?
Yuichi: できる( to be built, to be constructed)
この、できるは、canの意味もありますけど、ここでは、建物ができるという意味です。
Naomi: ちょっとややこしいですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi:Dekiru also means to be able to do, but this dekiru means to be built or constructed when talking about a building of some sort. When talking about shops, though, it often just means "to open", as in "a new shop has just opened up". It doesn't necessarily mean they built it from the ground up.
Yuichi: それでは、例文をお願いします。
Naomi:近所に、遊園地ができた。
Jessi: An amusement park opened up in the neighborhood.
Naomi: 「できる」には to appearとかto be completed とか、すごくたくさん意味があるんですよね。
それから、ダイアログの中に、「はまる」という単語も出てきましたね。「はまる」というのは、新しい日本語の言葉なんです。「熱中する」とか「夢中になる」という意味です。
Jessi: Hamaru means "to be completely absorbed in" or "to be hooked on"
Naomi: たとえば、「最近オンラインゲームにはまっています」
Jessi: I'm hooked on online games. はまってることはありますか?ないようなので…(笑)
Naomi: ここでちょっと、スタディティップですね。新しい単語を覚えるときには、必ず、例文を確認した方が良いです。Learning Center のExpansion with Audioというのがあるので、それで単語と例文を同時に確認してください。ゆういちさんが、一生懸命例文を書いていますので、是非使ってくださいね。
Jessi: So our study advice is when you learn the new vocabulary, see how its used in a sample sentence. That will really help you.If you have a premium membership you have access to the sample sentences for all of the vocab in the Learning Center. It's called Expansion with Audio, which means every sample sentence has audio that you can listen to, so definitely check it out!

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll review some grammar points from previous lessons.
Yuichi: このレッスンでは、復習をしましょう。練習をたくさんしていきます。
Jessi: Since this is a review lesson, we'd like to spend more time practicing.
Naomi: 頑張りましょうね。
Jessi: The first grammar point we're reviewing is そうだ, which is used when you want to report hearsay. Can we have a sample sentence, please?
Yuichi: 任天堂は小さい会社だったそうです。
jessi: I heard that Nintendo used to be a small company.
Yuichi: では、練習です。英語で今から文を言います。そして、ポーズの後、それを日本語で言ってください。
Jessi: I'll say a sentence in English - please say it in Japanese after the pause.
Jessi: Okay. Here we go. I heard that it will rain tomorrow.
(pause)
Yuichi:明日は雨が降るそうです。
Naomi: Or you could say 明日は雨だそうです。
Jessi:So did you get that one? Now Yuichi-san is going to repeat the sentence again, so please repeat after him during the pause after the sentence.
Yuichi: 明日は雨が降るそうです。
(pause )
Naomi: では、次に行きましょう。
Jessi: Hear the next sentence.I heard that Mr. Tanaka is free this week.
(pause )
Naomi: 今週、田中さんは、暇だそうです。
Jessi: Okay. Now please repeat.
Naomi: 今週、田中さんは、暇だそうです。はい、出来ましたか。
Jessi: On to the next grammar point, which is と言っていた is used when you want to quote what someone said. Could we have a sample sentence, please?
Naomi: Sure. 友達が、寿司は健康に良いと言っていた。
Jessi: My friend said that sushi is healthy.
Naomi: 「言っていた」の代わりに「言った」も言えます。でも、今日は、「言っていた」で練習をしましょう。Of course "said" can be translated as 言った but for this practice, let's stick to 言っていた。
Yuichi: では、練習です。
Jessi: I'll say a sentence in English, and please say it in Japanese after the pause.
Okay. Hear the sentence. John said that he is interested in Japanese anime.
(pause)
Yuichi: ジョンは、日本のアニメに興味があると言っていた。
Jessi:Now Yuichi-san is going to repeat the sentence again, so please repeat after him.
Yuichi: ジョンは、日本のアニメに興味があると言っていた。
Jessi: Well, how did you do?
Naomi: どうでしたか?
Yuichi: 今日は、たくさん練習をしました。復習のレッスンでしたからね。
Naomi:実際に、自分の口を使って、声に出して言うのは、とてもいい練習ですよね。
Jessi: When you actually say something out loud in Japanese, it is different from just listening to the lesson. So I hope this review helped you!
Yuichi: ラーニングセンターにもライン・バイ・ライン・オーディオがあるので、それを有効に活用してみてください。
Jessi: See you next time.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi:さようなら。
