Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
Jessi: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
English: Do the employees at Miyajima Trading clean the toilets every day? Why is that?
宮島社長:社員を教育するためです。
English: For the purpose of employee training.
: 私は、社員に、他の人の気持ちを考えるように言っています。
English: tell my employees to think about how other people feel.
レポーター:なるほど。ユニークなアイディアですね。
English: I see. That is a unique idea.
宮島社長:さて、今日もトイレをチェックするか。
English: Okay, well let’s check the toilets today.
: ん!なんだ、この汚いトイレは!
English: Hmm?! What is this dirty toilet?!
: ここの清掃の担当は・・・・(メモをチェックする音)田中の部署か。
English: Who is in charge of the cleaning here? (sound of checking a notepad) Ah, this is Tanaka’s department.
宮島社長:田中君、2階のトイレ、汚かったぞ。
English: Ms. Tanaka, the second floor toilet is awfully dirty.
田中部長(女):申し訳ありません。部下に、やり直すように伝えます。
English: I apologize. I’ll tell my subordinates to do it again.
田中部長:吉川君、また、トイレ掃除をサボったでしょ。
English: Yoshikawa, you skipped out on your toilet cleaning duties again didn’t you?
吉川:え?・・・はい。
English: Wha?... Yes…
田中部長:この前も、サボらないように言ったでしょう。
English: Didn’t I tell you before not to shirk your responsibilities?
: 給料カットするわよ(笑)。
English: I’m going to cut your pay! (laughs)
吉川:申し訳ありませんでした。これからは、気をつけます。
English: I’m very sorry. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.
: (心の声で)「新人の上田に、掃除するように頼んだんだけど、あいつ、サボったな。」
English: (internal voice) I told that new guy, Ueda, to do the cleaning, but it looks like he skipped out.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回のストーリーはどうでしたか。
Jessi: 社員がトイレ掃除するのって、初めて聞きました。I've never heard of employees cleaning the restrooms by themselves.
Naomi: そうですよね、あまり聞かないですけれど、祐一さん、これは、よくあることなんですか?
Yuichi: 結構日本ではあるかもしれませんね。I think it's more common than you might imagine. トイレ掃除をするのは、大変です。でも、そうすると、自分が使う時に、きれいに使おうと思うし、達成感がある。だから、心の教育になるんですね。
Jessi: Right, cleaning the restrooms is hard work, but doing it makes you want to keep the restrooms clean, -and- you feel a sense of accomplishment, or 達成感. That's why cleaning the restrooms can be called 心の教育, or education of the mind. Interesting phrase.
Yuichi: なんか、「トイレを掃除すると会社も良くなる」って言っている本も出ているみたいです。
Naomi: へー。
Jessi: There are books that say that having employees clean the restrooms makes for a better company.
Naomi: 面白いですね。
Yuichi: あと、トイレ掃除と言えば、学校でよくやりましたよね。
Naomi: そう、そうなんですよね。日本の学校では、生徒が学校を掃除することがあるんですよね。
Jessi: In Japanese schools, students, instead of a janitor, clean the school. 面白いですね。
Yuichi: 教室、トイレ、廊下などほとんど毎日掃除します。
Naomi: あー、しましたね。
Jessi: 小学生だけが、掃除しますか。Do only elementary students clean the school?
Naomi: あと、中学生も掃除しますね。
Yuichi: でも高校では、全部の学校が掃除をしなくて大丈夫ですね。
Jessi: Okey.So not all the high schools require the students to clean.
Naomi: そうですね。掃除好きでした?
Yuichi: ま、僕は嫌いではなかったです。
Jessi &Naomi: ふーん。(笑)
Naomi: アメリカは学校掃除しないんですか?
Jessi: しないですね。全然しないです。
Naomi: リスナーのみなさんの国ではどうですか。生徒が学校を掃除することがありますか。教えてください。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 今日は、会社の話だったので、会社に関連する単語を見ていきましょう。
Naomi: そうですね。たくさん単語が出てきてましたからね。
Jessi: That’s right. This dialog took place at a company, so let's take a closer look at some company-related vocabulary.
Yuichi: じゃあ、まず会社の役職(title)を見ていきましょう。役職は英語でなんですか?
Jessi: Title.Someone’s job title.
Naomi: 最初の単語は、社長 (Jessi-company president), それから、部長 (Jessi-department head, manager, or vice president depending on the company)
そうですね。Right. The translation for 部長 totally depends on the company.会社によりますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。この社長と部長の「ちょう」というのは、一番えらいという意味ですね。英語だと、topとかhead, chiefと言う意味になります。社長は、会社(company)の長(Chief,head)だから、社長は
Jessi: president of a company
Yuichi: 部長は、部(department)、長(chief or head)なので、部の長となります。あと、会社によっては、部長の下に、課長がいますね。課長の課(section)の長(chief or head)で、課長
Jessi: Section chief. あと、会長という言葉もありますね。会長 chairperson
Yuichi: よく聞く会社の役職は、会長(Jessi-chairperson)・社長(Jessi-president)・部長(Jessi-department manager)・課長(Jessi-section chief)という感じになります。
Jessi: So as we said the exact title and its translation depends on the organization of the company, however 会長、社長、部長、課長 are commonly used titles.
Naomi: こういう役職titleは「ーさん」や「ー様」の代わりに使うことができますよね。These words can be used as a suffix as well.
Jessi: So you can address someone by their name with their title attached. For example,
Naomi: 例えば、もし、祐一君が会社の社長なら、
Jessi: If Yuichi were the president of a company,
Naomi: I could call him 鈴木社長.
Jessi: So it's usually the second name with the title right? You wouldn't call him 祐一社長。
Naomi: そう、普通はそうですねー。あと、役職(title)だけでも呼ぶこともできます。
Jessi: You can address them only by their title too. This is quite common.
Naomi: 例えば、「おはようございます、社長。」 こんな感じですね。
Yuichi: ジェシーさん、なおみさん、社長 の反対は何ですか?
Naomi: 社長の反対の言葉?
Jessi: The opposite of president?
Naomi: 不思議な質問ですけど、答えは何ですか。
Yuichi: 社員です Company employee.
Naomi: んー、まあ、反対なのかどうかは、わかりませんけど、ま、確かに、company employeeは社員ですよね。
Yuichi: 前に、 even とかflatという意味の「平」をつけて、平社員ともいいます。
Jessi: 平社員 employee with no title
Yuichi: 役職がないので、平社員ですね。最後にもう一つ単語を見てみましょう。なおみ先生、お願いします。
Naomi: はい。部下
Jessi: subordinate
Naomi: じゃ、ここで、ゆういちさんと同じ質問をしましょう。部下はsubordinate。反対の言葉はなんでしょう。
Yuichi: 上司
Jessi: Boss. The opposite of 部下 subordinate would be 上司 boss.

Lesson focus

Jessi: This lesson's grammar point is ~ように言う, which is used for Indirect Imperatives. It's used when you're indirectly talking about telling or requesting someone to do something. The action that someone is being told or requested to do comes before 「~ように」.
Naomi: Jessi さん、英語だと、「ように」って言うのは、なんなんですかね?。
Jessi: ように can mean "in such a way" and this ように is followed by 言う, which means "to say" or "to tell." We can also use other verbs in place of 言う, which we'll get to later. 「such and such ように言う」 means "to tell someone to do such and such". For example,
Yuichi: 来るように言う
Jessi: to tell someone to come.
Yuichi: 勉強するように言う
Jessi: to tell someone to study
Yuichi: 食べるように言う
Jessi: to tell someone to eat
Jessi: The "Someone" who is being told to do something is marked by the particle に。Can we hear an example?
Naomi: 私は祐一さんに、もっと野菜を食べるように言った。
Jessi: "I told Yuichi to eat more vegetables." Let's break down this sentence.
Naomi and Jessi: 私は I and topic marker 祐一さん Yuichi に this particle marks the recipient so, ゆういちさんにis"To Yuichi" もっと "more" 野菜を食べる"to eat vegetables" ように "in such a way " 言った"told" or "said"
Jessi: So all together it means "I told Yuichi to eat more vegetables"
Naomi: 私は祐一さんに「ゆうちゃん、もっと野菜を食べて!」と言った といっても同じ事ですね。
Yuichi: じゃ、少し練習してみましょう。このレッスンの文法「~ように言う」を使って言ってみましょう。
Jessi: What would you say in the following situation? Please use the "Such and such ように言う"sentence structure.
Yuichi: 先生は生徒に「もっと勉強をして!」と言った
Jessi: The teacher said to the students "Study more!"
じゃあ、 答えお願いします The answer please.
Naomi: 先生は生徒にもっと勉強するように言った。
Jessi: Please notice that the verb that comes before ように is informal. Let's see some more examples. This time the negative form will appear. Suppose Yuichi was late to the office.
Yuichi: 直美さん、すみません。寝坊して遅れました。 Naomi, I'm sorry that I'm late. I overslept.
Naomi: もう、これからは、遅刻しないでくださいね。 Please don't be late again.
Jessi: So here, 直美さんは祐一さんに遅刻しないように言いました。 Naomi told Yuichi not to be late again. But... the next day...
Yuichi: 直美さん、ごめんなさい。また、遅刻しました。I'm very sorry I'm late again.
Naomi: 祐ちゃん、昨日、遅刻しないように言いましたよね。社長にいいますよ。
Jessi: Yuichi, I told you not to be late yesterday. I'm going to tell our boss.
Yuichi: すみません。明日は、遅刻しません。だから、社長には言わないでください。お願いします。
Jessi: I'm sorry! I won't do it again! So please don't tell the boss.
Jessi: So Naomi had told Yuichi not to be late, but he did it again, and he asked Naomi not to tell the boss. 祐一さんは、直美さんに、社長には言わないように頼みました。 So, as we mentioned before, you can change the verb that comes after ように. What verb is used depends on how the speaker said it. If they requested that someone do something, you can use ~ように頼む as we just saw. These verbs are explained more in detail in the PDF, so please check it out.
Naomi: PDFも読んでくださいね。お願いします。
Yuichi: 直美さんがリスナーのみなさんにPDFを読むように頼んでいますね。
Jessi: そうですね。Naomi is asking the listeners to check out the PDF. 直美さんがPDFを読むように頼んだから、読んでださいね。
Jessi: That’s all for today.
Yuichi: それではまた。
Naomi: さようなら。

レポーター:宮島物産では社員が毎日トイレ掃除をしているんですか。それは、どうしてでしょうか。

: 私は、社員に、他の人の気持ちを考えるように言っています。
