INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. What’s your probability of success?
Naomi: What's your probability of success?と言う事は、成功の可能性は? というタイトルですかね。タイトルどおり、今日は、可能性probability/possibilityの表現を勉強します。ーーーだろうーーーでしょう、ですね。
Yuichi: 例えば、明日は晴れだろう (It will probably be sunny tomorrow.)
Jessi: In this lesson, you will learn how to express possibility with daro/desho.
Naomi: 前回までのストーリーを教えてください
Yuichi: はい。徳川キミさんの錦鯉がいなくなりました。探偵は、近所の人に、聞き込みをしましたが、まだ錦鯉は見つかっていません。さてこれからどうなるのでしょうか。 二人はまだキミさんの家で話をしているようです。
Jessi: Previously, Kimi's colored carp disappeared while she was away. Kimi and Detective X tried to get some information from the next-door neighbor, but they didn't have any luck. So what are they going to do now? The conversation takes place at Kimi's house.
Yuichi: 今回の会話も キミさんと探偵Xの二人が話をしています。もちろん、丁寧にはなしています。
Jessi: The speakers will be speaking formally.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
English: Hmm. There were no suspicious people. No noises.
: わからない・・・。犯人は誰だろう。
I just don’t know… Who could the culprit be?
徳川キミ:ん・・!!ひらめきました!: 私、犯人が分かりました。
English: Wait!! I’ve had an epiphany! I know who did it.
探偵X:えっっ!!
English: What?!
徳川キミ:犯人は、人間ではありません。
English: The culprit was not human.
探偵X:動物か!もしかして猫ですか。
English: An animal! Perhaps a cat?
徳川キミ:いいえ、猫の習性を考えてください。English: No. Think about cat behavior.
: 猫は、水にぬれるのを極端に嫌うんです。
They hate getting wet more than anything else.
おそらく、水には近づかないでしょう。
A cat probably wouldn’t go anywhere near the water.
探偵X:なるほど。ということは、犬が真犯人ですね!
English: I see. Then a dog must be the culprit!
徳川キミ:いいえ、犬の手では、錦鯉をつかむことができませんよ。
English: No, a dog couldn’t catch a colored carp with its paws.
: それに、音がして、隣人が気づくでしょう。なので、犬も犯人ではないでしょう。
And on top of that, a dog would make so much noise that surely the neighbors would have noticed. It couldn’t have been a dog.
: 犯人は・・・(ヒソヒソ)
The culprit is… (whispers)
探偵X:ええ?すごい推理力。私を、弟子にして頂けませんか。
English: Wow, what amazing deductive reasoning! Please, take me on as your pupil!
ナレーション:次回驚きの真犯人!来週の放送をお楽しみに。
English: Who is the shocking culprit? Find out on next week’s broadcast!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。なんと徳川キミさん、犯人が分かったみたいです。
Jessi: So it looks like Kimi-san found out who the culprit was. The detective turned out to be useless.
Yuichi: そうですね。役立たずってやつですね。それにしても、犯人誰なんでしょう。気になります。
Naomi: そうですか。
Yuichi: はい。えっ、気になります。えっ、ジェシーさん、気になりませんか?
Jessi: あっ、もちろん、気になります。
Naomi: うそうそ。(笑)
Jessi: 犬でも猫でもないんですね。 Apparently the criminal is neither a dog nor a cat.
Naomi: 家出でもしたんじゃないですか。「えさが気に入らないんだよね。」とかいって。
Jessi: So you think the carp ran away from home because the food was bad.
Naomi: そうそうそう。
Yuichi: あの、死んじゃいますから。
Naomi: でも、ちょっとだけは、気になりますね。キミさんが言ってたの聞こえなかったからですからね。
Yuichi: そう、そうです。キミさんは、「ヒソヒソ、ヒソヒソ」って言っていましたよね。この「ヒソヒソ」と言うのは、誰かの耳の近くで、秘密の話を言うときに使います。
Jessi: This ひそひそ is used when you whisper a secret into someone's ear.
Yuichi: 例えば、ジェシーさん、ジェシーさん、直美さんってヒソヒソヒソヒソ。
Jessi: へー、ほんとに
Naomi: いやー、ひどーい。(笑)
Yuichi: ま、こういう風に、ヒソヒソ話よく僕たちやってますね、ジェシーさん。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: そうなの。すごいショックなんですけど(一同笑) ヒソヒソ話をするとかね、あのー、動詞になるんですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 極端に
Jessi: extremely
Yuichi: 「とても」という意味です。とても よりももっと強い、 「非常に」と同じくらいですかね。
Naomi: そうでしょうね。
Yuichi: 最初の漢字は「極」(Poles)、南極(south poles) 北極 (north poles) の 極です。次の漢字は「端(たん)これは「はし」(edge)といういみですね。
Jessi: So something is on the edge that leads to the meaning of extreme.
Yuichi: 例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 極端に、髪を短くする。
Jessi: I'm going to have my hair cut extremely short.
Naomi: 次の単語は、隣人 neighbor
If you look at Kanji, the meaning is quite obvious.「隣の人」ですよね。「隣に住んでる人」または、「近くに住んでいる人」という意味です。
Yuichi: そう言えば、この「りんじん」という単語、気をつけてください。日本語を勉強している人で間違えるひとがいます。
Jessi: So Yuichi says be careful when you use 隣人. Some learners often make mistakes. For example,
Yuichi: 隣人を愛しなさい。(Love your neighbor.)
と言いたいところを間違えて、
にんじんを愛しなさい。( Love your carrot.)(笑)
そうこの隣人とニンジンって、似ています。なので気をつけてください。
Naomi: うーん、Jessiさん。ちょっと、厳しいコメントをお願いします。(一同笑)
Yuichi: 温かいコメントをお願いします。
Jessi: ノーコメントです。(一同笑)
Naomi: じゃ、次の単語に行きましょう。次の単語は放送
Jessi: broadcast
Naomi: 放送は名詞nounですね。後ろに「する」や「をする」をつけると、動詞になります。
Jessi: When you use 放送 as a verb, you put する at the end. So 放送する is to broadcast.
Naomi: 局 と言うのはbureauとか channelとかagencyという意味ですが、局を後ろにつけて 放送局( broadcast station)になります。CNNとかBBCとか、ま、色々な放送局ありますけど、みなさんはどこの放送局が好きですか?
Jessi: そうですねー、CNNかなあ。
Naomi: 祐一さんは?
Yuichi: じゃあ、僕はBCC、BBCで。BCCじゃないですね。(笑)
Jessi: ほんとですか。
Yuichi: BBCで。
Naomi: 次は文法です。
Jessi: Let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll focus on Darō and its polite form deshō. They are used to express that the speaker's statement is conjecture with a high degree of certainty based on some information or knowledge held by the speaker. Darō/deshō can follow in the informal form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Let's take a look at some of the examples from this dialog.
Naomi: 犯人は誰だろう。("Who could the culprit be?")
Yuichi: 隣人が気づくでしょう。("surely the neighbors would have noticed.")
Jessi: So please notice that the speech before daro and desho is informal. Can you say the 1st sentence again please?
Naomi: 犯人は誰 (Who is the criminal)
Jessi: and then
Naomi: だろう( I'm wondering, I guess, probably)
Jessi: comes after word. Can you read the second sentence again?
Yuichi: 隣人が気づく (the neighbors are going to notice)
Jessi: And then
Yuichi: でしょう。(I guess.)
Naomi: If you want to change the sentence into negative or past, you can change the phrase before でしょう or だろう
Jessi: So the neighbors will probably notice is ...
Yuichi: 隣人が気づくでしょう。
Jessi: the neighbors won't probably notice is ...
Yuichi: 隣人が気づかないでしょう。
Naomi: この「でしょう」は weather forecastでもよく使いますよね。You hear this でしょう in the weather forecast.
Yuichi: 天気予報でよく聞きますね。
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: 例えば、明日は、雨が降るでしょう。
Jessi: It'll probably rain tomorrow.
Yuichi: 明日は、寒くなるでしょう
Jessi: It'll probably be cold tomorrow.
Naomi: We learned かもしれない and かもしれません in Lesson 9. But だろう and でしょうhas higher certainty.
Jessi: The intonation of でしょう and だろう goes down to express the probability. But if you change the intonation でしょう can work as tag question, right? でしょ?
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。 でしょ?だろう? works as "right?" or "Don't you think?"
そうでしょう?ゆういちさん。
Yuichi: はい、そうだと思います。それではまた。
DIALOGUE
