INTRODUCTION
Naomi: ナオミです。
Yuichi: ユウイチです。
Peter: Peter here. First Time in an Onsen! What Should I Do? Part 4.
Naomi: 初めての温泉の第4回目ですね。今日は何を勉強するんでしょう。
Yuichi: 命令文。 Imperative form ですね。あと、「ちゃだめ」、 as in 食べちゃだめ、飲んじゃだめ。
Peter: So today we are going to focus on phrases telling someone what not to do and the structure we are going to look at is a bit informal.
Naomi: そうですね。友達同士の会話ですからね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: 前回までのストーリーをユウイチさん、お願いします。
Yuichi: トオルさんとジョンさん、あと加奈子さんの3人が箱根の温泉に来ています。ジョンさんは温泉が初めてです。ですからトオルさんがジョンさんに入り方を教えています。
Peter: So Toru, John, Kanako all went to an Onsen, a Hot Spring in Hakone. As it’s John’s first time to go to a Hot Spring or Onsen, Toru is giving him instructions.
Naomi: これ、場所はどこでしょうね。
Yuichi: 男湯です。
Peter: Men’s public bath.
Naomi: ということで、今日の会話には加奈子さんは出てきません。
Yuichi: はい。男だけです。あと、おじさんも会話に出てきます。
Peter: So in today’s conversation, Kanako will not participate and it’s a conversation between three men. So Toru, John and a strange old man.
Yuichi: それでは、聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
TORU: What's the matter? Get in John.
ジョン: うん。(ジャッパーン)
JOHN: Okay. (Splash!)
トオル: あ、だめだめ。ジョン。タオルは、浴槽の中に入れちゃだめだよ。
TORU: Oh no, no! John, you can't take your towel into the bath.
ジョン: え?どうするの?
JOHN: Well, what do I do with it?
トオル: 僕は、小さくたたんで、頭の上に載せるよ。
TORU: Fold it up small and put it on your head.
ジョン: なるほど。 僕もそうしよう。
JOHN: Oh, I get it. I can do that.
 : (鼻歌)
 : (hums)
変なおじさん: 君達、あんまり長湯するなよ。倒れるぞ。時々、お湯からでて休めよ。
WEIRD OLD GUY: Don't stay in too long you two - you'll fall down! Get out and take a break from time to time, OK?
ジョン: あ、はい。
JOHN: Oh, okay…
トオル: そ、そろそろ、上がろうか。
TORU: Ah, let's get out of the bath.
ジョン: そっ…そうだね。シャ、シャワー浴びよう。じゃ、お先に・・・。
JOHN: Oh, okay. I think it's time for a shower. See you later.
トオル: シャワー?(舌打;チッチッチ)シャワーは浴びちゃダメダメ。温泉の効果がなくなるからな。
TORU: A shower?! Tsk tsk, a shower is no good! It'll undo the effects of the onsen.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: おじさんが、君たちあんまり長湯するなよ、倒れるぞ、と今日のダイアログで言ってるんですが、温泉って本当に危ないんですよね。
Peter: So in the conversation, the old man was saying, guys don’t stay too long in the Onsen Hot Spring because it could be dangerous.
Naomi: 2回ぐらい、私倒れそうになったことがあります。
Peter: So twice you kind of felt like you were going to pass out?
Naomi: Yeah but I didn’t, you know 頑張りました。すごい頑張った。
Yuichi: 頑張った。
Peter: 良かったですね。あと、ユウイチ先生は?
Yuichi: 僕は、そんな倒れることはないです。
Peter: So you had no problems.
Naomi: お湯が心臓より下に来ないとだめなんだって。わかります? The surface of the water has to be lower than your heart.
Peter: Heart. ええ、そうですか?
Naomi: 本当はね。
Peter: いつも首まで入ってますけど。
Yuichi: 危険ですね、危険。
Naomi: 普通のお湯なら大丈夫です。 If it’s a normal water, I think it is okay.
Peter: Yeah and I basically said that. I was going up to my neck.
Naomi: でも、温泉のお湯というのは熱いので、普通は心臓より下にしておかないと危ないんだそうです。
Peter: So when you enter an Onsen or Hot Spring, try to keep your heart above the surface of the water. それからお酒を飲んでから入らない方が良いですね。
Naomi: 絶対、絶対、絶対だめです。私それ一回本当に死にそうになりました。
Peter: So we recommend that you don’t drink and go in the Onsen or Hot Spring much like Naomi Sensei did.
Naomi: すごいのは、あのね、心臓がものすごい早くなるの。こんなに早く動くんだ!みたいな。
Peter: So your heart started beating really fast.
Naomi: そう。
Peter: So 私が入ってからお酒を飲みます。
Naomi: だめだめだめ。
Yuichi: 入りながら飲むお酒ってありますよね。
Naomi: よくテレビでね。ありますよね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: でも、あれも本当はだめです。
Peter: So there is – I said I usually have one drink afterwards because
Naomi: Afterwards?
Peter: Umm.
Naomi: Oh afterwards is fine.
Peter: 入ってから飲みますって言ってましたけど。
Naomi: It could mean like two meanings.
Peter: ああ。ナオミ先生と話してますか。
Yuichi: ああ。 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Peter: So I should have said 入ったら no, or..
Naomi: I interpret your sentence as 入っているときに飲みます。
Peter: 入ってから like I went in then. So I wanted to say after は、入ってから、後
Naomi: 入った後で or 上がった後で、かな。
Yuichi: Umm after getting out of the bath.
Peter: 入った後。
Naomi: うん。
Peter: Umm… 勉強になりました。
Naomi: Or 上がった後 . 上がった後 is pretty clear.
Peter: Or I could say 上がってから。
Naomi: そうそう。上がってから。
Peter: 文法は間違っていないですけど、でも言葉遣いが良くなかったです。
Naomi: ううん、良くないんじゃなくて、 it’s just a vague expression.
Yuichi: It can be both meanings so…
Peter: 勉強になりました。
Naomi: ピーターの勉強になりました、がまた出ましたね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: ちょっと口癖だよね。勉強になりました。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: はい。それからユウイチさん、すみませんでした。 You were telling us about the 酒 you can drink in the Onsen.
Yuichi: ああ、はい、そうですね。あれは、何て言うんですかね、お盆をお湯の上に浮かべてその上に日本酒のビンと、あと小さい、
Naomi: やってる人いないですけどね。
Yuichi: コップが、はい。
Peter: 見たことないですね。
Naomi: 多分ね、ユウイチさんはテレビを見過ぎています。
Peter: So he is watching too much TV.
Yuichi: いやまあでも、テレビではよくね。やってますね。
Naomi: テレビでは本当によくしています。 At the private bath とかだったら大丈夫かもしれないですね。
Peter: では On to the vocab.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: First word.
Naomi: たたむ
Peter: To fold as in clothes or 布団 and the reason we are specifying, there is another word to fold which is
Naomi: 折る
Peter: And this is actually the word used in origami.
Naomi: そうですね。 To fold, folding paper, origami or to break is 折る too like 足を折りました is like I broke my leg. じゃあ、今日のダイアログではトオルは何て言いました?
Yuichi: 僕は小さくたたんで頭の上に載せるよ。
Peter: I fold it up and put it on my head.
Naomi: これを、僕は小さく折って頭の上に載せるよ We can still say this one right?
Yuichi: うん、そうですね。
Naomi: 「折る」は To fold in general. じゃあ、サンプルセンテンスをお願いします。
Yuichi: Tシャツをたたむ
Peter: To fold the T-Shirt.
Yuichi: 店をたたむ
Peter: To close down the store.
Naomi: 「たたむ」には To close down っていう意味もあるんですね。次の単語は、
Yuichi: 鼻歌
Peter: Humming.
Yuichi: 鼻 means nose and 歌 means song. So nose song.
Naomi: フフフーという感じですよね。
Yuichi: はい。鼻で歌うっていうことですね。なので、鼻歌を歌う
Peter: To hum, to hum a tune.
Naomi: よく鼻歌、歌いますか?ピーターさん。
Peter: あんまり、
Naomi: 歌わないですか。
Peter: そうですね。ユウイチ先生は?
Yuichi: 僕も、歌いません。
Naomi: 私も歌わないですね。
Peter: そうですか?なんか、仕事中よく聞こえます。フーンフフーンフフーン、
Naomi: 次の単語は、上がる。
Peter: To get out of the bath.
Naomi: さっき使いましたね。今日のダイアログでは、トオルが
Yuichi: そろそろ上がろうか。
Peter: Shall we get out of the bath now?
Naomi: Instead of 上がろうか, he could have said 出ようか。
Peter: Let’s get out. Shall we get out?
Naomi: 出る means to get out.
Peter: To leave.
Naomi: そうですね。それからおじさんはダイアログの中で「出る」を使ってましたね。
Yuichi: ときどきお湯から出て休めよ。
Peter: You should get out of the bath sometimes and take a rest.
Naomi: これはもちろん、このおじさんは、ときどきお湯から上がって休めよ、でもいいわけですよね。
Peter: このおじさんはちょっと変わってますね。 He is a little strange.
Naomi: Like Peter right?
Yuichi: 親切ですね。
Naomi: No he speaks to strangers and friendly…
Peter: But not in the Onsen. 普通は声かけますけど、あんまり声かける場所ではないですね。 It’s not really a place to make friends. Yuichi Sensei お願いします。
Yuichi: まあそうかもしれないですね。温泉ですからね、皆裸ですよね。 They are all naked right.
Peter: そうですね。ちょっと想像して、上がってから奥さんと食べてて、それで知らない人から挨拶きて、「どうも」、奥さんが「え、誰ですか?」「ああ、さっきお風呂で会いました。」ちょっと、ですね。
Yuichi: ナオミさんがとってもよく笑っています。
Peter: Oh yeah I met him before in the bath.
Naomi: そんなフレンドリーになんないよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: サウナの中とかでね。次の単語は、
Yuichi: 効果
Peter: Effect.
Yuichi: 効果がある
Peter: There is an effect.
Yuichi: 効果がない
Peter: There is no effect.
Naomi: 「温泉」と「効果」をgoogleで入れてみたんですね、一緒に。
Yuichi: ああ、はい。
Peter: So Naomi Sensei searched 効果 effect and Onsen Hot Spring and she searched it in Google and a lot of hits came back for Onsen and sickness and Onsen and healing effect.
Naomi: その中の一つに、薬は病気を治す。温泉は心と体を治す。
Peter: So a lot of the Onsen have its water that’s heated naturally. So they are usually heavy in elements depending on where the location is. So some of them are better at healing other things. So it’s said that it also heals the body and mind.
Naomi: Body and mind かっこいいよね。
Peter: いい Marketing ですね。

Lesson focus

Naomi: では、文法です。今日の文法は、imperative
Peter: The imperative form is a strong expression and is usually used by males in very informal speech or by a superior to a subordinate in a social organization where there is kind of a hierarchy. So bosses will use it towards their subordinates or when friends meet especially guys, they will use it when speaking casually. Now you have to be very careful here. Using this in an inappropriate situation could have disastrous results.
Naomi: Maybe you can see those expressions on the sign…
Peter: Yes.
Naomi: Like 止まれ to stop or don’t touch 触るな
Peter: Yeah and there is one other case like if something happens and it’s your natural reaction, usually you will use this especially in the form of telling someone to do something. For example 見ろ like look. You don’t really have time to…
Naomi: Put the ます soon.
Peter: Or the て下さい。
Naomi: て下さい。
Peter: Hey Yuichi, 見て下さい。
Yuichi: It's too late.
Peter: Yeah. You missed it. So we covered this in previous series. Today what we are going to cover is a spoken colloquial form of giving orders. I remember the first time I heard this because I had no idea what the person was saying and at that time, I had a really good grasp of Japanese. So it’s a very cool structure – grammatical structure that’s used quite often among males speaking informally. So what we are first going to do is take a look at the textbook introduction of the negative informal of don’t do something.
Naomi: じゃあもし、 Keep out とかだったら?
Yuichi: 入るな。
Peter: Don’t enter.
Naomi: 次の文法ポイントは何でしょう。
Yuichi: ちゃだめ
Peter: This is the colloquial version of something na, the negative imperative and it means don’t do something. The way it’s formed is ちゃ plus だめ. So let’s take a look at the example we had before of don’t sit for wet paint.
Naomi: 座るな
Peter: Becomes.
Naomi: 座っちゃだめ
Peter: Now ちゃ is a shortened form of
Naomi: ては
Peter: From the grammatical structure.
Naomi: てはいけません or てはだめです
Peter: Which means you can’t do something. So here we are just shortening it. There is a 座るな which is don’t sit and there is also you can’t sit which is
Naomi: 座っちゃだめ、座ってはいけません
Peter: Which is the most polite way to say it. More informal is
Naomi: 座ってはいけない
Peter: And on the same level but just a different way of saying this, much shorter and more compact is.
Naomi: 座っちゃだめ
Peter: You can’t sit. For example if we say you can’t eat that. How can we say you can’t eat that?
Yuichi: 食べちゃだめ
Peter: And keep out meaning you can’t enter.
Yuichi: 入っちゃだめ

Outro

Peter: So this ちゃだめ. All right, that’s going to do for today.
