Naomi: はい。
Peter: Yuchi-san?
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: Hmm Yuchi Sensei 卒業しました。今回だけかな。とにかく、ジョンの気持ちよくわかります。
Yuichi: ああ、本当ですか。
Peter: I can really relate to John. 何のため Like what’s this for え、何のためですか?これどうしたらいい?タオルは本当に小さい。 and the towel is really small. So この気持ちよくわかりますよ。
Naomi: ね、それから温泉に入った後も戸惑いますよね。浴衣の着方とかね。 How to put on 浴衣.
Peter: So yeah it was even hard after I got out of the bath to put on the 浴衣 and it was 大変でした Kind of it was rough but 価値がありましたよ。 It was worth it.
Naomi: ユウイチさんはよく温泉に行きますか?
Yuichi: ああ、行かないですね。
Naomi: え、行かないの?
Yuichi: はい。やっぱり若いので。
Naomi: 何それ。
Peter: は?
Naomi: 喧嘩売ってるんですか?
Yuichi: I am young. So I don’t go to Hot Springs so often.
Naomi: どういうこと?
Peter: Naomi Sensei wants to know if you are trying to start a fight.
Yuichi: でもナオミ先生は女性なので。 Girls like going to Onsen I think.
Naomi: Yeah.
Peter: こっち喧嘩売ってますか?
Yuichi: それはまあ、はい。
Naomi: ピーターは温泉によく行くんですか?
Peter: あんまり行かないですね。 I don’t really go.
Naomi: You changed your answer since you heard Yuichi’s comment right?
Peter: いや、 そんなことない。あの、ちょっと恥ずかしい。
Naomi: 裸になるのが?
Yuichi: 裸になるのが?
Peter: うん。だよね。
Naomi: ああ、そうなんだ。
Peter: 何だっけ、 Birthday suit 誕生日 suits.
Naomi: Birthday suits, do you know? Like being naked.
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: Really.
Peter: なんか、日本語だと何て言う?
Naomi: 産まれたままの姿
Peter: そう。
Yuichi: ああ、はいはい。
Peter: 覚えてるね。昨日みたいに。
Yuichi: そういうことじゃないけど。
Peter: おお。
Yuichi: はいはい。 A birthday. I thought a birthday is like a birthday party. So…
Peter: 変な誕生日、
Yuichi: They get naked…
Peter: Strange birthday party with Yuichi.
Yuichi: はい、勘違いでしたね。はい。
Peter: 大勘違い。
Yuichi: 大勘違い。
Peter: Big misunderstanding. 大勘違いって言いますね。
Yuichi: いや、大きな勘違い。
Naomi: 巨大な勘違いですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: ああ、巨大な。
Naomi: そんなの嘘だよ。 今のは I just created the phrase, it’s not a proper phrase at all.
Peter: I like it. でも、もう一度お願いします。 Birthday suit.
Naomi: 産まれたままの姿。「産まれた」
Peter: ああ、産まれた
Naomi: Born, to be born. で、「まま」
Peter: ああ、産まれたまま
Naomi: 「姿」が figure とか style.
Peter: 姿。産まれたままの姿。
Naomi: じゃあ、ピーターさんは産まれたままの姿になるのが恥ずかしい。
Peter: Yeah. あの、
Naomi: You.
Peter: 20人の男性の目の前で Like in front of 20 other guys.
Naomi: Nobody is looking at you.
Peter: いや、見られるよ。 Like they look.
Naomi: わかんなけど。
Yuichi: わからない。 I don’t know.
Peter: Let’s take a look at the vocabulary and phrases in this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: 今日のダイアログの中に、 Bathtub という意味の言葉が2つありました。 There are two Japanese words which mean bathtub in Japanese. 「浴槽」と「湯船」です。両方とも、浴槽も湯船も同じ意味ですよね。
Yuichi: はい。そうですね。
Naomi: The first kanji for 「浴」 means bathe and the second kanji means tub. So 「浴槽」 bathtub この「槽」ですが、前に「水(すい)」を付けると、水槽となって
Yuichi: Water tank ですよね。
Naomi: 湯船というのは「湯」が Hot water 「船(ぶね、ふね)」 means ship. So hot water ship とか bath ship という意味です。
Peter: How does it get its name?
Naomi: これは江戸時代にバスタブを積んだ船が、銭湯がない、お風呂がない場所に行ってビジネスをしたことから始まってるそうです。
Peter: So the ship is the public bath.
Naomi: はい。 Moving public bath ship.
Peter: 最後使う人、かわいそうですね。
Yuichi: But that’s why they are used 掛湯. They wash their bodies before going to the bathtub. So it’s clean.
Naomi: Generally speaking the hot water doesn’t get dirty because people wash their body before they take a bath.
Peter: 後でナオミ先生が温泉の入り方について説明しますので。 In this lesson or the next one, Naomi Sensei is going to explain about how to..
Naomi: Not me, in the dialogue.
Peter: Ah the dialogue.
Naomi: はい。 If you read the dialogue, it will be very clear. 次の単語は、
Yuichi: 温度
Peter: Temperature.
Yuichi: 「温」は
Peter: Warmth.
Yuichi: 「度」
Peter: Degree.
Yuichi: なので、 Degree of warmth, temperature. になりますね。
Naomi: うん。これ、でも Body temperature は温度って言わないですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: We don’t usually call body temperature as 温度. We say
Yuichi: 体温
Naomi: Body warmth っていう感じかな。
Yuichi: 「体」 means body and 「温」 is warmth. なので body warmth になるわけですね。
Naomi: それから Climate のときも同じですよね。温度じゃなくて「気温」 Air temperature という風に言います。
Yuichi: 次の単語は、慣らす。
Peter: To accustom.
Naomi: 慣れる
Peter: To get used to.
Naomi: もう仕事に慣れましたか?
Peter: Have you gotten used to the job?
Naomi: The causative form of 慣れる is 慣れさせる、慣らす has that same meaning as 慣れさせる. In today’s dialogue.
Yuichi: 温泉の温度に体を慣らす。
Peter: Get your body accustomed to the temperature of the hot spring.
Naomi: 温泉の温度っていうのが Temperature of hot spring ですよね。体を慣らす、というと Adjust your body, adjust one’s body ということです。
Peter: On to today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Peter: Naomi Sensei, what’s today’s grammar point?
Naomi: ために as in 何のために?
Peter: For what purpose. ために is an expression most commonly used to indicate purpose. A rough translation to English is for, so that. ため is a noun meaning something useful or advantageous. A common construction is a verb in the non plain past plus ために plus a second verb. So usually two clauses separated by ために. Let’s take a look at an example and that will explain it a lot better.
Yuichi: お金を稼ぐために仕事をする。
Peter: I work to earn money. So the first part is
Yuichi: お金を稼ぐ
Peter: To earn money.
Yuichi: ために
Peter: For, in order to
Yuichi: 仕事をする。
Peter: Work. I work in order to earn money. We can also use this construction with a noun but if we use it with a noun, it’s a noun plus
Naomi: のために
Peter: Okay, example please.
Naomi: 私は自分のために仕事をする。
Peter: I work for the benefit of myself.
Naomi: What a nice sample sentence.

Outro

Peter: Okay inside the PDF again detailed explanation. This is one of the more useful phrases in Japanese especially when you are looking to take your sentence construction to the next level. I remember ために because it’s something you use so often. That’s going to do for today.
Yuichi: さよなら。
