INTRODUCTION
Naomi: ナオミです。
Yuichi: ユウイチです。
Peter: Peter here. Lower intermediate lesson, season 3, Lesson 19. Passive Voice, Part 3. Learn To Speak Japanese Politely and Naturally.
Naomi: 今日もまた、ガールトークですね。そして、 passive voice の3回目のレッスンです。
Yuichi: 前回は、梨花がケンジと出かけると言っていました。今日は、その次の日の話です。
Naomi: うまく行ったんでしょうかね。
Peter: So in the previous lesson, リカ went out shopping with Kenji. This conversation takes place the very next day.
Yuichi: 今日の文法も受け身です。
Peter: Today’s grammar point is the passive voice. はい、 Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: 聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
RIKA: So, I went shopping with Kenji, and he said "Help me look for a ring for my girlfriend." It was a huge shock.
あかり: へぇー。で、ケンジ君には告白したの?
AKARI: Whoa. So did you confess your feelings to him?
梨花: 一応、したけど、あっさり振られたわ。「結婚したい子がいるから」って言われた。
RIKA: Well, sort of, but he interrupted. "There's a girl I want to marry," he told me.
あかり: あらあら・・・。
AKARI: Tsk, tsk.
梨花: ま、しょうがないわね。次よ。次。もっと、良い男を見つけるんだ。でも、社内恋愛はやめるわ。皆に、噂されるからね。
RIKA: Oh well, what can you do? Next time, next time. I'll find a good man. But I'll stop dating within the company. There's so much gossip, you know.
あかり: 確かにね。
AKARI: That's true.
梨花: (ため息)あかりちゃんは、いいわね。素敵な旦那様に愛されていて。
RIKA: (sighs) You're so lucky, Akari. You have a wonderful husband who loves you.
あかり: 素敵かどうかは、分からないけど、まぁ、愛されてるかもね。でも、嫉妬深くて大変よ。この前、旦那に携帯のメールを見られて、男の子のアドレスを全部消されたわ!
AKARI: I don't know about "wonderful," but he probably loves me. But, his jealousy is a problem. Recently, he looked through the mail on my phone, and he deleted all the men in my address book.
梨花: うぁ、それも大変ねぇ~。
RIKA: Ooh, that's tough.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: はい、モテモテのユウイチさん、今日の会話どう思いましたか?
Yuichi: よくわかんないけど、最近モテモテのユウイチになってますね。
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。なんか、ミドルネームがモテモテ。
Peter: いいですね。 So I think that will be a very good name for Yuichi Sensei like モテモテ
Naomi: So ユウイチ モテモテ スズキ。
Peter: Yuichi he has got it going on Suzuki.
Yuichi: それ多分、皆嫌うと思います。嫌われます。
Peter: Yeah 嫌われないです。愛されます。
Yuichi: ところでナオミさん、何かありますか?
Naomi: だから、ユウイチさんはどう思いましたか?
Yuichi: あ、これですか?
Naomi: So what did you think about today’s dialogue?
Yuichi: えっと。まあでも、男の子が女の子の友達にプレゼント何あげるか相談するって言うのはいいことだと思いますね。
Naomi: へえー。
Peter: So a guy should kind of consult with the girl’s friend to see what she likes.
Naomi: まあ、ピーターはその方がいいかも知れないよね。
Peter: ちょっと、どういうことですか?
Naomi: なんでもないけど。
Peter: Why is it made up for me? もちろんそうしますよ。
Yuichi: 女の子の意見を聞くのはいいことですよね。じゃあナオミ先生、今まで贈られたプレゼントの中で、一番嬉しかったものは何ですか?
Peter: So Naomi Sensei, out of all the presents you received to date, what’s the present that’s made you the happiest?
Naomi: 食事券。
Peter: Hah!
Naomi: 食事券。あのね、meal coupon at the very expensive restaurant.
Peter: 現金と変わらないです!
Naomi: え、なんで?だってすごい高い、すごい良いレストランのお食事券もらって、すごい嬉しかったの。だって行けないでしょ?自分で。
Peter: It’s the same thing as money like a gift certificate to an expensive restaurant.
Naomi: Oh yeah, yeah gift certificate is a good gift too but..
Peter: 助けてー!
Yuichi: 助ける。
Peter: 永遠に、女が分かりません。
Naomi: うん、わかられたくないもん。じゃあ、単語見ていきましょう。
Peter: It’s the same as cash.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: The first word is 告白する
Peter: To confess, to throw up.
Naomi: 大事なことを人に言う、ということですね。
Peter: To say something important to a person. So when you use this, you need an object marker after the thing you confess to.
Naomi: Such and such を告白する。
Yuichi: 本当のことを告白する。
Peter: To confess the truth, to come out. When 告白する is used by itself without any object, it usually means confessing one’s love.
Naomi: So romantic ね。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: 吐きたい。
Yuichi: 吐きたい。じゃあ次の単語は、噂する
Peter: To gossip.
Yuichi: 噂 is a noun and it means gossip or rumor. 噂の左は口ですよね。
Peter: So the left side radical of this kanji is mouth.
Yuichi: 右は respect ですね。
Peter: 合わせると、 Mouth and respect.
Naomi: ね。怖いね。 People respect the word which comes from one’s mouth. That’s why rumor spreads.
Peter: なるほど。
Yuichi: なるほど。
Naomi: 次は、噂をすれば影 Speak of the devil.
Peter: そうですか?
Naomi: て、言いますよね。
Peter: よく使いますか?
Naomi: よく使いますよ。噂をしていると、その人が来ます。
Peter: Ah! Speak of the devil.
Naomi: そう。よくピーターさん、来ますよね。
Yuichi: よく。そうですよね。
Naomi: はい、次です。
Yuichi: 次の単語は、嫉妬深い
Peter: Jealous.
Yuichi: 嫉妬深い人
Peter: Jealous person.
Yuichi: リスナーの皆さんは嫉妬深いですか?
Naomi: ピーター、嫉妬深いですか?
Peter: どう思いますか?
Naomi: うーん。なんかあんまり気にしなさそう。 You don’t care about other people.
Yuichi: Other people.
Peter: いや、さそり座ですから、逆です。
Naomi: ふーん。 Opposite expression of 嫉妬深い is
Yuichi: 嫉妬しない?ですかね。
Naomi: あとは嫉妬深くない、とか言いますね。
Yuichi: うん。
Naomi: でも嫉妬浅いとは言えません。
Peter: ナオミ先生は、嫉妬深くないですか?
Naomi: うーん。どうでしょうね。
Yuichi: あっさりしてるんじゃないですか?
Naomi: The next word is あっさり
Peter: Light, easy.
Yuichi: 今日のダイアログでは、あっさり振られたわ。
Peter: She was casually rejected.
Naomi: そうですね。多分、ケンジにうーん、とか考えてもらえなかったんでしょうね。
Peter: So Kenji probably wasn’t even thinking, just kind of natural instinct.
Yuichi: あっさり。
Naomi: それから、今日のダイアログに出てきた、素敵 Fantastic ですが、この漢字って変わってますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 「素」が
Peter: Origin.
Naomi: 「敵」が
Peter: Enemy.
Naomi: これは、当て字だそうです。
Peter: 当て字ってどういう意味ですか? What does 当て字 mean?
Naomi: The kanji is used not based on the meaning but only the sound.
Peter: 当て字。
Naomi: はい。じゃあ、文法に入りましょう。

Lesson focus

Peter: Today’s grammar point is very similar to the previous lesson. If you haven’t heard that, check back with that lesson after you finish listening to this one or stop now and go back and listen. Now this lesson’s grammar point focuses on passive sentences that come from active sentences with the following structure a, は, b, の possessive something, をする. Now I think the best way to exemplify this is to have an example. Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: 母は私の日記を見た。
Peter: My mother read my diary. The key here is when it becomes a passive sentence, the possessive part will be separated. Naomi Sensei, what’s the passive of this sentence?
Naomi: 私は母に日記を見られた。
Peter: So in the passive sentence, the doer is marked by
Naomi: に
Peter: The object is marked by
Naomi: を
Peter: And then we have the passive.
Naomi: 見られた
Peter: How about another example?
Naomi: 母は私のメールを読んだ。
Peter: My mother read my email. Now you can also say here
Naomi: 私のメールは母に読まれた。
Peter: But does that sound natural?
Naomi: No it’s not.
Peter: So what do we have to do here?
Naomi: You have to start the sentence with the receiver of this action 私
Peter: Okay so what do we have?
Yuichi: 私は母にメールを読まれた。
Peter: My mail was read by my mother.
Naomi: And as long as you have the right particle, you can switch the word order.
Yuichi: 私はメールを母に読まれた。
Naomi: じゃ、もう少し練習しましょう。サユリが僕の顔を殴った。
Peter: サユリ slapped my face.
Naomi: Passive にすると、
Yuichi: 僕はサユリに顔を殴られた。
Peter: My face was slapped by サユリ
Naomi: そうですね。 Receiver of the action is ユウイチさんですからね。
Peter: This structure is very interesting because the English translation is my something, something but in reality, if you directly translate it, it’s me by サユリ face was slapped. There is no “by” in there.
Naomi: そうですね。 You could say it, but it doesn’t sound natural in Japanese.
Peter: So it’s kind of you are establishing that the topic is me and then a face was slapped and when you put it together, that’s how you get the my face but literally you are stating the topic 僕は Naomi Sensei に顔を殴られた。
Naomi: 殴ってないけどね、 I didn’t hit you.
Peter: まあ、考えたことあります。 But anyway…
Naomi: まあ、ありますけど。

Outro

Peter: With that first topic marking particle, I am setting it up that we are talking about me. So there is no – literally there is no possessive in there. Yes you have to bridge the concept. That’s going to do for today.
Naomi: じゃあまた。
Yuichi: さよなら。
