ジョン: わぉ!駅弁?食べよう、食べよう!
加奈子: じゃ、箱根に決まり!トオルも温泉に行きたがっていたから、誘おうよ。
ジョン: え?トオルも?...い、いいね。そうしよう。(なーんだ二人じゃないのか)
もう一度お願いします。ゆっくりお願いします。

加奈子: 温泉、いいねぇ。どこの温泉に行こうか?
ジョン: うーん。温泉に詳しくないからな・・・。加奈子のお勧めはどこ?

KANAKO: John, what do you want to do for summer vacation?
ジョン: 温泉に行こうよ。
JOHN: Let's go to an onsen.
加奈子: 温泉、いいねぇ。どこの温泉に行こうか?
KANAKO: An onsen...Sounds nice. Which onsen shall we go to then?
ジョン: うーん。温泉に詳しくないからな・・・。加奈子のお勧めはどこ?
JOHN: Well. I don't know about hot springs very well...so what is your recommendation?
加奈子: そうねぇ。なるべく近いところがいいね。箱根はどう?
KANAKO: Yeah, well...it's probably better to go to a place close by. How about Hakone ?
ジョン: 箱根は、日帰りできるし、富士山も見られるし...うん。いいね。賛成!箱根の温泉に行こう。
JOHN: Oh, we can make a day trip to Hakone, and we can see Mt. Fuji. It's a good idea. Let's go to an onsen in Hakone.
加奈子: それに、ロマンスカーで行けるから、駅弁も食べられるし、楽しいよ!
KANAKO: And what's better, because we can go on a Romance car, we can eat ekiben. Sounds like fun. I can't wait.
ジョン: わぉ!駅弁?食べよう、食べよう!
JOHN: Wow! Ekiben? Let's eat it.
加奈子: じゃ、箱根に決まり!トオルも温泉に行きたがっていたから、誘おうよ。

JOHN: What? Toru? O...Ok. Let's do that.
ジョン: (なーんだ二人じゃないのか)
JOHN: (Oh, it's not just the two of us.)
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 箱根は確かにいい温泉地ですよね。 I think Hakone is a pretty good Hot Spring resort area.
Peter: とっても有名ですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: Quite famous.
Naomi: ゆういちさん、箱根について説明をお願いします。
Yuichi: はい。まず、神奈川県にあります。
Peter: So it’s in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Yuichi: 神奈川県は東京の下にありますから、
Naomi: 下?
Yuichi: 南にあります。 So it’s in the South of Tokyo.
Peter: So it’s South of Tokyo, Southwest to be exact.
Yuichi: ピーターさんさすが。詳しいですね。で、東京から大体1時間から2時間で行くことができます。
Peter: And you can get there in about an hour or two from Tokyo.
Naomi: 箱根は山の中にありますよね。 It’s in the mountain.
Peter: 日本の一番いい温泉って言えませんけれども、東京と近いですね。 So not the best Onsen in…
Yuichi: Japan?
Naomi: According to Peter’s survey でも、割といい所ですよね。
Yuichi: はい、僕も言ったことがあります。
Naomi: 登山電車とか面白いですよね。
Yuichi: A switchback right?
Naomi: はい。
Peter: Those are the ones that go on one track and they can pass another train by stopping at a station right?
Naomi: そうです。 Nostalgic 懐かしい感じがしますよね。
Yuichi: 僕は、
Naomi: でも別に、知らないですよ。 I don’t live in that era but….
Peter: Generation gap. I thought about that generation gap.
Naomi: ちょっと待って、違う違う。 That is not what I meant. Like nostalgic feeling. You don’t say that.
Peter: Not about switchback trains.
Naomi: そうなの?ちょっとなんか、
Peter: 聞いたことないですけど、
Naomi: なんか懐かしい感じの、しないか?
Peter: あと Yuichi, how do you say generation gap in Japanese?
Yuichi: Generation gap ですね。
Naomi: 紫陽花も有名ですよね。
Peter: 紫陽花って何ですか?
Naomi: Hydrangea.
Peter: Ah..The flower.
Naomi: はい。箱根の紫陽花も有名です。
Peter: That’s what ですね。
Yuichi: また、Generation gapが。
Naomi: え、ちょっと待って。
Peter: それでは、ちょっと年齢と関係なくて。
Yuichi: あ、関係なかったですね。
Naomi: 美的センスの問題だと思いますね。
Peter: So yeah that doesn’t really have to do – I said, that doesn’t really have anything to do with age and Naomi kindly input. It more has to do with artistic sense or should I keep going?
Naomi: How sophisticated you are?
Peter: Sophisticated. That’s the word もう一度お願いします。
Naomi: 美的センス。でもこれはもっと、なんか More like artistic sense.
Peter: Sophisticated. So rather than explore other ways to insult Yuchi, let’s move on to some phrases and vocab from today’s lesson. はい、 Naomi Sensei お願いします。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: 詳しい
Peter: Knowing very well, detailed.
Naomi: 詳しい、は E ending adjective. 詳しく、は is another verb. 詳しい計画
Peter: A detailed plan.
Naomi: 詳しく教えて下さい。
Peter: Please tell me everything.
Naomi: Everything になるんだ。 訳すの難しいですよね。
Peter: そう、ちょっと難しいですね。 Like detailed-ly tell me.
Naomi: It's a bit difficult to translate.
Peter: なかなか難しいですね。
Naomi: 次の単語は、
Yuichi: 日帰り
Peter: Daytrip.
Yuichi: 一日で帰る、という意味ですよね。
Naomi: 「日」がdayで、「帰る」が To return.
Yuichi: 日帰りの旅。
Peter: Daytrip.
Yuichi: 日帰り旅行。
Peter: Daytrip.
Yuichi: 日帰り温泉。
Peter: An Onsen day trip. So a Hot Spring day trip.
Naomi: これ日帰りで、どこどこに行くという風にも使えますよね。 We often say 日帰りで such and such へ行く。
Peter: So the particle is で
Naomi: 日帰りでスノーボードに行く。
Peter: Let’s go on a daytrip snowboarding.
Naomi: 次は、「なるべく」
Peter: Preferably.
Naomi: もし、できるなら。 If it’s possible と、似た意味ですよね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: 例えば、「なるべく早く返事を下さい。」
Peter: Please reply to my email as soon as possible. A quick reply is preferable.
Yuichi: 次は、「駅弁」
Peter: Station box lunch.
Yuichi: 「駅」、は station ですよね。で、「弁」は弁当のことですね。
Peter: So the 弁 is an abbreviation of 弁当。
Naomi: 駅で買うお弁当のことですよね。 The box to lunch, you can buy at the station. で、これミキのブログでも出てきましたよね。
Yuichi: はい。日本にはたくさんの駅弁があります。
Peter: So there are a lot of station box lunches in Japan.
Yuichi: あと。駅弁だけじゃなくて、空弁っていうのもありますよね。
Peter: 空弁って何ですか。 What’s a 空弁。
Yuichi: 「空」は空港です。 Airport. 空港で買える弁当のことです。
Peter: 弁当 You can buy at the airport.
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: 素晴らしいマーケティングですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 国内線は機内食が出ないんですよね。 Domestic flights don’t serve meals. So people grab before they get on their airplane. 飛行機に乗る前に買って食べます。
Peter: Okay on to today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Peter: Today we have two grammar points. First is the plain volitional form and the second is がる. First let’s take a look at the plain volitional form. Today it was used to solicit somebody to do something. So kind of a way of inviting somebody to do something. What do we have in the conversation?
Naomi: 箱根の温泉に行こう。
Peter: Let’s go to the hot springs in the Hakone. Here the speaker is agreeing and also at the same time expressing the notion that he wants everyone to join in the idea. 箱根の温泉に行こう。 So let’s all go, expressing, using it to solicit other people to do something. Can we have another example?
Yuichi: 駅弁?食べよう食べよう。
Peter: Station box lunch. Let’s eat it or let’s get that, let’s have that. So here with this 食べよう食べよう the person is expressing their desire to eat and also the fact that the people with them should also join him or her.
Naomi: 次の文法は、「がる」
Peter: Is an auxiliary verb which is attached to the masu-stem plus たい to express that another person than a speaker wants to do something. Translate this, it kind of means seems like somebody or something wants to and this is in the case that it’s used with auxiliary adjective たい. So first let’s start with an example and we will work backwards. Naomi Sensei お願いします。
Naomi: トオルも温泉に行きたがってたから、誘おうよ。
Peter: トオル wants to go to hot springs. So let’s invite him. Now one crucial piece of information I left out when I said it seems like, it seems like the person wanted to do something. When the speaker uses this, he is saying it based on something, some kind of look by the person they are talking about, some kind of information he has. So in this case, トオル wants to go to a hot spring. It’s based on some kind of information that the speaker has. To kind of put it in an example, if I say to Naomi Sensei ユウイチも温泉に行きたがっている it seems like Yuchi wants to go to an Onsen hot spring. This is maybe based on information that we spoke last week or we spoke last week and he expressed the interest or another person heard. たがる is usually used when speaking about a third person, something. It seems like they’d want to do based on some information. Naomi Sensei, do you have a better example?
Naomi: 例えば、明日はピーターの誕生日です。
Peter: So tomorrow it’s Peter’s birthday.
Naomi: 明日の夜、誕生会をしようという話になってます。
Yuichi: 僕とナオミさんが話しています。
Naomi: はい。
Peter: So Naomi and Yuchi are talking about a birthday party that they are going to have for me tomorrow.
Naomi: So I have no idea which restaurant I should make a reservation at. I might ask Yuchi 明日どこのレストランに行きましょうか、ユウイチさん?どこのレストラン予約しましょうか?
Peter: So where should we get a reservation tomorrow. Where should we go to eat tomorrow.
Yuichi: あ、そういえばピーターが韓国料理を食べたがっていましたよ。
Naomi: 韓国料理。
Peter: Ah if you ask me that, it seems like Peter wants to eat Korean.
Yuichi: あと、メイドバーにも行きたがっていましたよ。
Naomi: メイドバーね。じゃ、韓国料理とメイドバーの予約をしましょうか。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: So it also seems like he wants to go to a Maid bar. So let’s make a reservation at a Maid bar and for Korean food. Now Yuchi, what is this based off of? Why would you use たがる?
Yuichi: Because yesterday I talked to you. Then you said that you wanted to go to Maid bar and Korean food you wanted to eat.
Naomi: そうそう。ピーターが、例えばメイドバーのパンフレットを見てたとかね。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: That’s where たがる comes in and to form this construction, we take the masu-stem of the verb, we add the auxiliary adjective たい. So for example, we had 食べたがっている. So first we take the verb to eat
Naomi: 食べる
Peter: We get the masu-stem which is
Naomi: 食べ
Peter: We add the auxiliary adjective.
Naomi: 食べたい
Peter: To want to do something たい. 食べたい Want to eat. Then we drop the い and we add
Naomi: がる
Peter: 食べたがる Seems like, wants to eat. And this is a very big difference. Yuchi can use たがる here because we spoke yesterday but if they had no idea ピーターは何食べたいかなあ
, I wonder what he wants to eat because you have no idea but when you have an idea speaking about a third person, that’s the time you would use たがる. Now this is for most cases. There are other cases when you don’t use it when がる is used differently but for this case たがる.

Outro

Naomi: 今日はこの辺で、じゃあまた。
Yuichi: さよなら。
