POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 今日の会話は Polite Japanese というふうに言ったんですが、「僕は運命を感じるな」というのは、Casualですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: So this conversation was polite Japanese but there was one part where there was casual Japanese.
Naomi: あとは、最後の「また?」とかも、ちょっとCasualですけれども
Yuichi: これは、どうして
Naomi: どうしてでしょうね。これはたぶん、Taigaさんの Personality がちょっと出ているっていうところもあると思いますし、あとはちょっと自分に話してる。
Peter: So there is two reasons. One is that, umm, in one instance, he is talking to himself when he is talking about luck and that he is feeling lucky. And another instance, it’s kind of shows his personality. He’s kind of caught off guard a bit. So rather than putting on the polite mask, he just kind of spoke from his heart. は?また?
Yuichi: 運命を感じるな Normal people don’t say a lot right?
Peter: Yeah.
Yuichi: ちょっとおかしいですね。
Peter: そういうキャラですね。そういう character.
Naomi: そうですね。だから、Taigaって呼んで下さい、とか言ってますからね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: He is saying like call me Taiga to the bank teller.
Peter: Naomi先生、このLessonのために何か調べておきましたか?
Naomi: 両替の手数料はすべて合ってますね。
Peter: So I asked Naomi Sensei if she checked anything for like if she did any fact checking for this lesson and so all these numbers are correct.
Naomi: そうですね。 At least at the Misui Sumitomo bank. So every bank has different rule. So if you go to Mizuho bank and they might have different rule.
Peter: これほんとにすごいですね。こういうServiceがほんとにすごいです。 This service is something else.
Naomi: 何?両替?
Peter: そうです。
Naomi: ふーん。
Peter: アメリカにいたときに、大昔なんですけど、両替するためにcoinを巻いておかないと銀行が受け取らないです。
Naomi: え、巻いておく?
Peter: 巻いておきます。Roll them. If you don’t roll the coins yourself, the bank won’t take them.
Yuichi: By 100 coins or
Peter: そうですよ。なんか紙があって And so there was a little paper and あ、ちょっと忘れてしまったんですけど、そこにcoinを突っ込んで、それでRollになります。
Yuichi: あー、はい。日本は透明のRollですよね。
Peter: そうですね、それそれ。
Naomi: でも、自分でやらないよね。We never do it by ourselves.
Peter: Again this was a while ago but なんか日本に来たら、銀行がやってくれるServiceについてわかったらすごいうれしかったです。 I was like really happy when I came to Japan and found that you could just bring your coins to the bank, give them the coins and they would give you the amount.
Naomi: へー、知らなかった。
Peter: しかし、日本に住んでいる外国人、気を付けた方がいいところあります。
Yuichi: どこですか?
Peter: So for foreigners living in Japan, you should watch this. 自分の国のcoinを混ぜないように気を付けて下さい。
Naomi: あー、犯罪っていうふうに思われることもありますからね。
Peter: いや、ただ銀行に怒られます。
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。いや、でもほんとに
Peter: So the bank will just get angry.
Naomi: そう、すごく怒られると思います。
Peter: 犯罪ではなくて機械に損を与えますから。 Like it damages the machines. So 結構怒られます。 they will be angry at you. それだけです。
Naomi: では、単語に行きましょう。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: 最初の単語は、ちんちくりん
Peter: Very short.
Naomi: Something is not right とか not balanced とか weird というときにも使われたりします。たとえば、あの人のズボンはちんちくりんだ。
Peter: So that person’s pants are too short.
Yuichi: So that we can see his ankles like socks like that’s ちんちくりん
Naomi: ほんとの Original meaning of ちんちくりん is very short.
Yuichi: But not very short in this sentence right?
Naomi: Ah yeah, yeah, yeah. The 受付の人が言ったやつですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: Like weird or not right. 次は
Yuichi: こぜに
Peter: Coin, small money.
Yuichi: It literally means small money. So coins.
Naomi: Or it could mean small amount of money ですね。 or you could say こうか.
Peter: Coin.
Naomi: 1円硬貨
Peter: One yen coin.
Naomi: 5円硬貨
Peter: Five yen coin.
Naomi: 100円硬貨
Peter: 100 yen coin.
Naomi: というふうに使いますね。
Peter: あと500円は使えないですか?
Naomi: 使えますよ。500円硬貨、全部、50円硬貨、10円硬貨
Peter: 1円硬貨って何で作られましたか?
Naomi: アルミ
Peter: アルミ Aluminum?
Naomi: Umm
Yuichi: Very light.
Naomi: ね。
Peter: Yeah.
Yuichi: So worthless
Naomi: 1円硬貨の代わりに In a conversation, we often say 1円だま
Peter: One yen coin.
Naomi: So だま or たま is ball or circle.
Yuichi: お年玉もそうですね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Peter: 「硬貨」の字なんですけど、最初の字は「硬い」ですね。
Naomi: はい、Hard とか tough.
Peter: それから右の方は?
Naomi: Currency.
Peter: Currency. So hard currency.
Naomi: はい。で、お札or紙幣are bills ですね。 as in like paper money ね。たとえば、1000円札
Peter: ¥1000 bill.
Naomi: 1000円紙幣と言ってもいいですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。2000円札
Peter: ¥2000 bill
Yuichi: 5000円札
Peter: ¥5000 bill.
Yuichi: 10000円札
Peter: ¥10,000 bill.
Naomi: そうですね。全部これは「紙幣」に変えることができます。
Peter: 2000円札ってまだ
Naomi: 使ってます。
Peter: 使ってますか?
Naomi: はい
Peter: 大丈夫ですか?
Naomi: 使えます。
Peter: なくなる話もあったんですね。
Naomi: あ、でも今、郵便局が使ってます。The post office are trying to use old 2000円札 Every time I go to 郵便局 they give the change all in 2000円札
Peter: So the post office is pushing it and the government stances ちょっと、 あいまいですね。 like we don’t know what they want to do with that bill yet.
Yuichi: はい、そうですね。
Naomi: 超使えないですね、2000円札。
Yuichi: はい。2000年に作られました。
Naomi: 次の単語は、りょうがえ
Peter: Change, money exchange.
Naomi: AをBに両替する
Peter: Exchange A to B.
Naomi: たとえば
Yuichi: 円をドルに両替する
Peter: Exchange yen to dollars.
Naomi: Dialogueでは、小銭をお札に両替してましたよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。あともうひとつ、「すみません。500円硬貨に両替して下さい。」
Peter: Excuse me, could you change this to ¥500 coins.
Naomi: 次はなんでしょう。
Yuichi: てすうりょう
Peter: Service charge.
Yuichi: 手数 means trouble and 料 means fee.
Naomi: 手数というのは、手の数 Number of hands, numbers of trouble ていう感じでしょうかね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 今日の会話の中では
Yuichi: お手数ですが、こちらの用紙にご記入をお願いします。
Peter: Excuse me, please fill out this form but お手数ですが is kind of like I know it’s troublesome or I know it’s going to be bothersome but….
Naomi: そうですね。 Even if the speaker doesn’t think it’s troublesome, we use it in the business situation.
Yuichi: とてもていねいですね。
Naomi: Instead of just saying 電話を下さい、お手数ですが電話を下さいますか?
Yuichi: Sounds very polite.
Peter: 初めてこの表現を見た時に、E-mailの中ででした。
Naomi: E-mailでも使いますね。 We use it a lot in emails too.
Peter: Very polite とてもていねいな方で、E-mailをくれまして、「お手数ですが」という表現が出まして、最初は What does this mean? 意味わからなかったです。
Naomi: あー、なるほどね。
Peter: もし、お手数ですがという表現を見たら、何かたのまれますね。
Naomi: はい。
Peter: So if you see this, chances are you are going to be asked to do something.
Naomi: 何かをたのむときは、「お手数ですが」を入れると、まぁ安全ですよね、 in a business situation.
Peter: Whether you get it or not, we don’t know but yes it’s very polite. そう、そのE-mailの中で、「お手数ですが添付した文章をCheckして下さい。」 So I am sorry to bother you but can you please check the file attached?
Naomi: 次は、はんがく
Peter: Half price.
Naomi: これは、漢字を見ればわかりますよね。 If you look at the kanji, you can easily get the meaning 半 means half 額 means amount. So half price, half amount. 全額 is
Peter: Full amount.
Naomi: そうですね。 Entire amount っていう感じでしょうか。ビール半額
Peter: Half off beer.
Yuichi: 半額セール
Peter: 50% off sale.
Naomi: これ、よく見ますよね、町の中でも。
Peter: どうでしょうね。あんまり見てないんですが。
Naomi: あー、だってYou never go shopping.
Peter: そうですね。言えます。
Yuichi: 次は、ようけん
Peter: Business.
Yuichi: You can put the polite prefix ご、ご用件
Naomi: どのようなご用件ですか?
Peter: What’s your business or how may I help you?
Naomi: これは、会社で電話を受けた時とかによく使います。あとは、おうちとかでもそうですね。知らない人から電話がかかってきて、何を言いたいのかよくわからない時とか使ったりします。どのようなご用件ですか?
Peter: What kind of business?
Naomi: So, so, so I use it when somebody is trying to sell over the phone.
Peter: その前でしょ?言ってるかどうか確認するためですね。
Naomi: そうそうそう。「あー、どのようなご用件ですか?」「じゅうたんいりませんか?」「あ、結構です。」
Peter: 結構です。
Naomi: では、文法に入りましょう。

Lesson focus

Naomi: 今日のtarget phrase は、お持ちのお客様
Peter: Which translates to, the customer has something, something.

Lesson focus

Now today’s grammar point is the structure. The polite prefix お plus the ます stem of a verb plus a noun as in
Naomi: カードをお持ちのお客様、カウンターまでお越し下さい。
Peter: The customer who has the card, something, something, please come to the counter and in this case, it was her number.
Naomi: そうですね。
Peter: And then another example would be
Yuichi: お待ちの間
Peter: While you are waiting. So these expressions show the speaker’s respect for someone when describing that person’s action or state. You will come into contact this with a lot when you are a customer as the company or the person providing the service will treat you in a very respectful way or talk to you in a very respectful way. Let’s take a look at a common one. Naomi Sensei, what about the expression 帰る客 a customer who is going home or a customer who is leaving?
Naomi: お帰りのお客様
Peter: Let’s have the before which was
Naomi: 帰る客
Peter: And then the after
Naomi: お帰りのお客様
Peter: With the after being an extremely polite way to say the same expression. Now let’s take a look at how we form this. In the before, we had 帰る客 which is the dictionary form of the verb to return or to go home and the noun for customer 客. First let’s see what we do to the verb. First we get.
Naomi: 帰り
Peter: Which is the ます stem of this verb. In front of that, we place.
Naomi: お
Peter: We get the expression
Naomi: お帰り
Peter: We follow this with
Naomi: の
Peter: Then we have the noun 客. Now to make – to elevate the position of the customer to that noun, we add.
Naomi: お客様
Peter: So honorific prefix and an honorific suffix. So altogether we have
Naomi: お帰りのお客様
Peter: The customer who is leaving. The customer who is going home.

Outro

Peter: Now inside the PDF, there is a very detailed write up on how to form more of these. Now most likely you are not going to use these unless you are working at a hotel or a restaurant or in a business situation. Most likely, you will hear these. So it’s important to know what’s being said to you and hence the reason we introduced this. That’s going to do for today.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi: さよなら。
