Naomi: でした? Past tense.
Yuichi: 今も友達です。Hajimeさんは、川越に住んでいます。で、今日、Yasumiさんは、Hajimeさんのうちに遊びに行こうとしています。
Naomi: なるほど。
Peter: So Hajime and Yasumi are friends and Hajime is living in Kawagoe. Now in today’s conversation, Yasumi is going to Hajime’s house to hangout.
Naomi: そうですね。で、たぶん、Yasumiさんは今、駅ですかね?
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: うん、駅にいます。 Yasumi is at the station.
Peter: And the conversation takes place between.
Naomi: Yasumiと乗客
Peter: So Yasumi and someone on the train. And this conversation will be in polite Japanese.

DIALOGUE
Naomi: 今度は英語が入ります。
ヤスミ: すみません、この電車は小川町に行きますか?
YASUMI: Excuse me. Does this train go to Ogawa-machi?
乗客: はい、ですが各駅停車ですよ。小川町に行くなら、急行電車の方が速いですよ。
PASSENGER: Yes it does, but this is a local train. If you want to go to Ogawa-
machi, an express train will be faster.
ヤスミ: 急行は川越に止まりますか?
YASUMI: Does the express train stop at Kawagoe?
乗客: そう思いますけど。あ、急行はあれですよ!
PASSENGER: I guess so. Oh, that's the express train!
ヤスミ: どうもありがとうございます!
YASUMI: Thank you very much.
乗客: どういたしまして。
PASSENGER: You're welcome.
ヤスミ: あ、もしもし?
YASUMI: Hello?
ハジメ: おお、ヤスミ。いまどこ?
HAJIME: Hey, Yasumi. Where are you now?
ヤスミ: いま、池袋駅。東武東上線に乗るところ。
YASUMI: I'm at Ikebukuro Station. I'm about to get on Tobu Tojo Line.
ハジメ: 早く来なよ!彼女がピザを焼いたところなんだ。超うまそうだよ。
HAJIME: Hurry up! My girlfriend just made pizza. It looks so good, dude.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: この電車は小川町へ行きますか? Does this train go to Ogawa-cho station. I think this phrase is very, very convenient この電車は~に行きますか
Peter: あ、よかったです。この電車は小川町に行きますか?そのまま、この表現そんなに役に立たないと思いますね。 Like as it is…
Naomi: You have to change the Ogawa-cho part, yeah.
Peter: はい、そうですね。 You have to change the station.
Naomi: これは、赤坂へ行きますか?とか
Yuichi: この電車は、川越に行きますか
Naomi: これよく聞かれますよね、電車で。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 何回も聞かれたことがあります。
Peter: So you have been asked many times?
Naomi: はい。
Yuichi: お年寄りによく聞かれます。
Peter: Ah by elderly people, you are often asked this.
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: あと外国人の人にもこれよく聞かれますね。
Peter: はい、そうですね。私もよく聞きます。
Yuichi: じゃ、みんな使っていますね。
Naomi: はい。とっても便利です。
Peter: たまに私、私にも聞かれます。それで、答えると、なんかすごい微妙な感じがします。
Naomi: Peterさんに聞く人は、日本人が?
Peter: 日本人が私に、「すいません。この電車は~へ行きますか?」て聞いて
Naomi: まちがってますよね、たぶん。聞く人をまちがってる
Peter: いや、あの、違いますよ。東京がわからない人多いですよ。 たとえば、地方から来る人、よくわからなくて、「すいません。」たまにありますよ。So like sometimes people come from local areas and they are kind of looking around. So maybe I will ask them 大丈夫ですか? like you know, can I help or something like that.
Naomi: あ、やさしい!
Yuichi: おー。
Peter: でしょ?
Naomi: I didn’t know you are that kind.
Peter: Yeah. So but yeah they are a little surprised that a foreign person. It’s kind of like weird feeling that I am helping them.
Naomi: なるほどね。
Peter: こないだ、大阪から5人のおばさんたちが、東京タワーを探して
Naomi: 大阪のおばちゃん
Peter: 「すいません、あの、東京タワーはどちらですか?」て聞かれて、「あ、こちらです。タクシーお呼びしますか?」て聞いたら、「あ、お願いします。」
Naomi: え?タクシー呼んだの?Peterが?
Peter: はい。
Naomi: えー!?すごいね、えらいね。
Peter: まーね。
Naomi: へー。
Peter: Okay. Enough about this もう、以上でしょ?
Naomi: はい。
Peter: あのー、お願いします。 Vocabulary.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: かくえきていしゃ
Peter: Local train.
Naomi: かくmeans eat, えき means station. てい is 止まる which means to stop and しゃ means car. So the car which stopped at each station.
Peter: Local train.
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: We can say かくえき just 各駅 instead of 各駅停車
Naomi: そうですね。かくえき、あとは、かくてい、も言いますよね。
Yuichi: うん、そうですね。
Naomi: じゃ、Sample sentence お願いします。
Yuichi: 各駅に停車します。
Peter: It stops at each station.
Naomi: 次の単語は?
Yuichi: きゅうこう
Peter: Express.
Naomi: いろいろな種類の電車がありますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 一番速いのは何て言いますか? What’s the fastest train?
Yuichi: とっきゅう
Peter: Shinkansen じゃないですか?
Naomi: はい、はい、すいませんでした。
Peter: はい!外国人の勝ちです。
Naomi: でも、新幹線も特別急行ですよね。
Yuichi: そうですよ。
Naomi: そうそう。そうだよね。特急券がいるんだもん、だって。
Peter: あ、特急券、そうですね。
Naomi: So Shinkansen is part of 特別急行電車、特急電車ですね。「とくべつきゅうこう」が「特別」はspecial とか super という意味で、「急行」が express なので、「特別急行」が special express で、 shortened form が、「特急」ですね。次に速いのは?
Yuichi: きゅうこう
Peter: Express.
Naomi: 他には、かいそく
Peter: Rapid.
Naomi: 快速よりも少し遅いのは?
Yuichi: じゅんきゅう
Peter: Local express.
Naomi: で、先ほどの、かくえきていしゃ
Peter: Local train.
Naomi: 会社によってRuleは違いますけれども、ま、これがBasicなRuleだと思います。
Peter: The naming convention depends on the company.
Yuichi: ややこしいですね。
Naomi: そうですね。ま、これが電車のTypeの名前だということを知っておくだけでもいいかと思います。
Peter: Very complicated stuff.
Naomi: Sample sentence がありますね。
Yuichi: まもなく一番線に急行電車がまいります。
Peter: The express train will arrive at the platform momentarily.
Naomi: 次の単語は、やく
Peter: Bake, grill.
Naomi: ケーキを焼く
Peter: To bake a cake.
Naomi: ピザを焼く
Peter: To bake a pizza.
Naomi: ステーキを焼く
Peter: To grill a steak.
Naomi: でも、これ、「手を焼く」という表現もありますよね。
Peter: To give someone trouble, to get one’s finger’s burnt. え?たとえば?例文お願いします、Naomi先生。
Naomi: Peterにいつも手を焼いています。
Peter: So Peter is always giving you trouble.
Naomi: はい、次行きましょう。
Yuichi: うまい
Peter: Meaning one, good at. Meaning two, delicious, tasty.
Naomi: ふたつ意味がありますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。ひとつは、「じょうずな」という意味ですね。
Peter: So the first meaning is good at.
Naomi: たとえば?
Yuichi: この絵、うまいですね。
Peter: This painting is really good.
Yuichi: ふたつ目の意味は、「おいしい」
Peter: はい、例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: このピザうまいですよ。
Peter: This pizza is good.
Naomi: このピザおいしいですよ、ていうことですね。
Peter: Next.
Naomi: じょうきゃく
Peter: Passenger.
Naomi: The first kanji 乗 is 乗る to ride 客はお客さん guest, customer ですから、「乗るお客さん」ということで passenger 客の代わりに「車」 car を付けると、乗車 to get in a car, to get on the train という意味になります。

Lesson focus

Naomi: では、文法です。今日の文法は、「なら」
Peter: Which is the hypothetical form of the copula だ and works as a subordinate conjunction which forms conditional clauses. So this is also conditional. In this three part series, we are going to be looking at conditionals. In the previous lesson, we covered the と conditional. Subordinate clause, if something, something is fulfilled, then the main clause. In this one, we are looking at preceding clause and with なら, it expresses the speaker’s position about the truth of a present or past fact or the actualization of something in the future. So it’s kind of like in the English if then. If it is true that or if that’s the case, then something, something. Kind of like an if then.
Naomi: 酒を飲むなら、車を運転しちゃだめだ。
Peter: If you drink alcohol, then you can’t drive. So the speaker feels strongly about drinking and driving. Next example.
Yuichi: 来週テストがあるなら、勉強したほうがいい。
Peter: Next week if you have a test, you should study. So again here, the なら is used because in this conditional based on the speaker’s feeling or experience that if there is a test, you should study. So in today’s example, Yasumi had advice from another passenger and this advice was based on that passenger’s experience or something they know or some kind of beliefs they have.
Naomi: Information.
Peter: Yes we had that.
Naomi: 小川町に行くなら、急行電車の方が速いですよ。
Peter: So if it’s the case that you are going to Ogawa-Cho, it will be faster to go by express train. So the difference between なら and the other conditionals in Japanese と、たら and ば, なら doesn’t have the very strict if condition is true, then result takes place. There is this strong correlation. With と you remember, one had to be fulfilled for the other to take place. This isn’t the case with なら. Okay inside the PDF, very, very detailed explanation about this but this was really もう勉強になりました。ほんとに初めて知ったんですね。
Naomi: そうですね、これ考えないですよね。
Peter: はい。
Naomi: You don’t really think about the difference.
Peter: Yeah it’s kind of… 勉強になりました。

Outro

Naomi: そうですね。ま、日本語を勉強するなら、Japanesepod101.comがいいですよ、とかね。
Peter: うまい! That was good. If you are going to study Japanese, it would be good to study with japanesepod101.com すばらしいです。
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi: さよなら。
