Yuichi: TomさんはJunkoさんにカフェで会いました。
Peter: And he met Junko a Japanese girl at a café.
Naomi: Junkoさんに電話番号を聞いてましたよね。
Peter: He asks for Junko's number.
Yuichi: でも、JunkoさんはTomさんが電話ができないように、にせの番号を教えました。
Peter: But Junko gave him a number that doesn’t exist. Yuichiさん、こういう経験ありますか?
Peter: いや、ないです。
Naomi: でも、Tomさんはあきらめないみたいですね。今日のLessonでもがんばってます。
Peter: So Tom is not giving up and he is trying very hard in today’s lesson too. So let’s find out what happens.
DIALOGUE
Naomi: 今度は英語が入ります。
トム: じゃあ誰かお友達紹介してもらえませんか。
TOM: Can you introduce me to a friend of yours?
じゅんこ: あ、いいですよ。みさっていう暇な子がいるんで、ちょうどいいと思います。
JUNKO: Um, sure. There's a girl named Misa, who has some free time. So I think she would be perfect for you.
今から電話して、ここに来るように言ってみましょうか。
Do you want me to call her now and invite her over?
トム: はい、是非お願いします!
TOM: Yeah, thanks! I'd appreciate that!
どんな子ですか。かわいいですか。
What kind of girl is she? Is she cute?
じゅんこ: (プープー)あれ、電話に出ませんね。
JUNKO: (beep, beep) Oh, she's not picking up the phone.
じゃあ後でトムさんに直接電話をかけるように言っておきます。
I'll tell her to call you directly later.
トム: 絶対ですよ!お願いしますね。
TOM: Yes, please! Please do that!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Naomi Sensei この会話どう思いましたか?おかしくないですか?
Naomi: Junkoは、あまりMisaのこと好きじゃないと思います。 I don’t think Junko likes Misa very much. そう思わない?
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: でも、それよりもこれが犯罪じゃないですか?
Naomi: え、どういうこと?
Peter: Is this legal? なんかもう、ストーカーを回すことできますか? Can you like send the stalker in a different direction?
Naomi: うーん、どうだろう?どう思いますか?助けて、Yuichiさん。
Yuichi: But Tom is not a stalker right?
Naomi: Not yet.
Peter: Not yet.
Yuichi: Not yet. Junkoさんは、よくない人だと思います。
Naomi: 性格悪そうですよね。
Yuichi: はい。I think Junko is not a good person.
Peter: なんでですか?
Yuichi: Misaさんは、Junkoさんの友達ですもん。「ですもん」はおかしいですね。ちょっと待って下さい。
Naomi: おかしい、おかしい、今のちょっとまた、日本語つたなくなってきた。
Yuichi: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Junkoさんは、Misaさんの友達じゃないですか。Misa is Junko's friend.
Naomi: 友達を売ってるみたいなものですよね。 It’s like Junko is selling her friend’s information.
Peter: なんかSelling ではなくて、回している、その「問題回し」という日本語ありますか?like to take
Naomi: ないない。
Peter: じゃ、教えて下さい。 Like to take the problem and turn it, give it to someone else.
Yuichi: あ、これありますね。
Naomi: 何?
Yuichi: たらい回し
Naomi: あー、たらい回しね。
Peter: ありがとうございます、Yuichi先生。
Naomi: 「たらい」というのは大きいBucketのことですよね。
Peter: So it’s a big bucket.
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 「回す」というのは、もちろんTurnという意味もあるんですけれども、 To pass it to somebody というのも「回す」という意味なので、この場合は I think it means they are passing the bucket to somebody else. They are pushing the responsibility みたいな感じかな。
Peter: いい表現ですね。そうすると、「Naomi先生に、たらい回してあげます」という表現使いますか?
Naomi: あまり使わないですね。 「問題をたらい回しにする」とか言いますよね。You don’t want to take any responsibility. So you just pass the problem to the other person.
Peter: ほんとにありがとうございます、Yuichi. あとはいいですね。
Yuichi: どういたしまして。
Naomi: はい、単語を見ていきましょう。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: First word お願いします。
Yuichi: だれか
Peter: Someone, somebody, anyone, anybody.
Naomi: 「だれ」というのが、Who という意味ですよね。これが「だれか」になるとどうでしょう。
Yuichi: Anyone and especially used in a question.
Naomi: 「だれも」になると
Yuichi: Anyone and especially used in a negative sentence.
Naomi: Nobody て感じですかね。たとえば、誰がひまですか?
Peter: Who is free or who has free time.
Naomi: 誰かひまですか?
Peter: Is anyone free? Does anybody have time?
Naomi: 誰もひまじゃないです。
Peter: Nobody is free.
Naomi: 誰か、誰も、このふたつの表現を覚えておいて下さい。
Yuichi: もうひとつありますね。
Naomi: あ、はいはい。
Yuichi: なに
Peter: What.
Yuichi: なにか
Peter: Anything in an interrogative sentence.
Yuichi: なにも
Peter: Anything in negative sentences or nothing.
Yuichi: In a sample sentence, in sample sentences 何を食べましたか?
Peter: What did you eat?
Yuichi: 何か食べましたか?
Peter: Did you eat anything? Did you eat something?
Yuichi: 何も食べませんでした。
Peter: I didn’t eat anything. はい、次お願いします。
Naomi: ぜひ
Peter: By all means, please, certainly.
Naomi: どうしても、とか、必ずという意味ですよね。
Peter: So people sometimes say
Yuichi: ぜひ
Peter: Twice to emphasize.
Naomi: あ、そうですね。ぜひぜひ日本に来てください。
Yuichi: そうですね。ぜひぜひJapanesepod101.comを聞いて下さい。
Peter: あ、Yuichiさん、すばらしい文章ですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: Naomi先生、悪くないですよね。
Naomi: 是非、よりも、是非是非だと、やっぱりちょっと強くなりますね。
Peter: でもこれの方が、 Casual ですね。
Naomi: そうです。
Peter: For example, 是非是非契約を結んで下さい。 or you wouldn’t say that in a business meeting right?
Naomi: No そうですね。Casual だったらば、もう是非是非是非是非とかね。
Yuichi: 皆さんも、是非是非、「是非是非」を使って下さい。
Peter: うまいですね。次は?
Yuichi: 電話に出る
Peter: To answer the phone.
Yuichi: 電話をかける
Peter: To make a call.
Naomi: たとえば、昨日Peterさんに電話をかけたけど、出なかった。
Peter: Yesterday I called Peter, but he didn’t answer. Naomi Sensei この文章もう一度お願いします。今回、主語入れて下さい。
Naomi: そうですね。これは、昨日私はPeterさんに電話をかけたけれど、Peterさんは電話に出なかった。
Peter: ありがとうございます。 So I think it’s a little clear that you can see who is doing what. So 電話をかける to make a call and 電話に出る
Naomi: So particle が違いますからね。気を付けて下さい。
Peter: あと動詞も違いますね。 Native English speaker としてちょっと難しいですね。出る means to exit.
Naomi: あー。
Yuichi: あー。
Peter: What else to leave. でも、電話の場合、電話に出る to appear on the phone.
Naomi: Uh huh.
Peter: And we say pick up.
Naomi: Our answer.Peter: Yes so 最初日本語を勉強してた時に、電話と一緒にこの動詞を使うのがちょっと難しかったです。 It was a little hard to understand the concept of 電話に出る
Naomi: そうですね。次の単語は、ちょくせつ
Peter: Direct, personal.
Naomi: たとえば、今日私は家から直接スタジオに来ました。
Peter: Today, I came directly to the studio.
Naomi: 社長と直接話をしたい
Peter: I like to talk to the president directly.
Naomi: 「直接」というのは、「じかに」ということですけれども、 directly ということですが、 opposite word is 間接
Peter: Indirect.
Naomi: そうですね。次お願いします。
Yuichi: 言ってみる
Peter: To attempt to say something.
Yuichi: 言っておく
Peter: To say something in preparation. Both みる and おく when following a verb in the te form are used as auxiliary verbs. So てみる means to make an attempt at doing something. To see what it’s like or what will happen. For example
Naomi: テストを受けてみる
Peter: I will try to take the test to kind of see what happens. So you don’t know if you will pass or not but try, see what happens. ておく means to do something in advance for future convenience.
Naomi: テストを受けておく
Peter: So I will take the test so I know what it’s like maybe for next year. You don’t plan to pass this year. So I am going to take it to see what it’s like. So next year, I know what to study and how to pass it. So this concept of ておく is one of the more difficult ones that I experienced in my studies in Japanese and I always try to grasp it but I think the example that really did it for me was vegetables 野菜です. So think about if you are making food. So you are getting ready preparing to make food. So you want to chop the vegetables up because when the fire starts, you are not going to have time to cut them. So if you 切っておく cut them in preparation for throwing them in once the oil is hot, this concept hopefully can become a little clear. You do it in preparation for using it at a later time. ておく
Yuichi: 「切っておく」ってやつですね。はい。 I think it’s a very good example.
Peter: ありがとうございます。 Okay on to today’s grammar point. Naomi先生、お願いします。

Lesson focus

Naomi: ように言う
Peter: To say something so that someone does something and this ように言う follows a verb in the non-past plain form.
Naomi: 電話する、だったら、電話するように言う
Peter: Tell someone to call.
Naomi: 働く、だったらどういうふうになりますかね。
Yuichi: 働くように言う
Peter: Tell someone to work. Now this is another very difficult concept that took me a very long time to understand and the best way I think that it can be explained is, you have to understand there is three people involved when this is said. The speaker, the listener and the third person who the speaker is asking to do something. There is three people in the studio today. So it makes for a very easy example. Let’s imagine this is the workplace and let’s imagine Yuichi san and Naomi Sensei are in the office and I am out of the office. So I call Yuichi san, ”Yuichi san, Naomi Sensei に私に電話するように言って下さい” So please tell Naomi to give me a call.
Yuichi: はい、わかりました。Naomi先生に、Peterに電話するように言っておきます。
Peter: Then I hang up the phone. So let’s just try it. So I call
Yuichi: あ、もしもし
Peter: Yuichiさん、Naomi先生に、私に電話するように言って下さい。
Yuichi: わかりました。じゃ、Naomi先生に電話するように言っておきます。
Peter: はい、お願いします。じゃね。
Yuichi: Bye bye.
Peter: Naomi先生、どうでしたか?
Naomi: すごいClearだと思います。
Peter: So notice how when I spoke to Yuichi, the listener, I told him ように、ように言う because this was something he was supposed to say to a third person. Yuichi said ておく because he will do that in preparation of Naomi calling me. So よかったですね. This could be in a Japanese book. すごい良かったです。
Naomi: そうですね。「言う」の代わりに「たのむ」 ask という意味の「たのむ」を使ってもいいと思いますね。詳しくは、PDFに載っていますので、是非そちらもCheckしておいて下さい。

Outro

Peter: Be sure to check out the PDF for this lesson. Some really important grammar points that hopefully the way we explain that will demystify them and really help take your Japanese to the next level. Yuichi: はい。 Perfect.
Peter: はい、お願いします。 That’s going to do for today.
