POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Natsuko what do you think? Do you want to watch K-1 now?
Natsuko: Well yes, it sounds really exciting. ピーターさんは格闘技の試合をよく見ますか。
Peter: 結婚する前よく見ました。現在、あんまり見ません。 Before I was married, I used to watch it a lot but not anymore.
Natsuko: Does that mean that your wife doesn’t like martial arts?
Peter: その通りですね。
Natsuko: うーん。なるほど。
Peter: 本当にこれ見るの?って言われると、私がチャンネルを変えます。
Natsuko: なるほど。
Naomi: 優しいですよね。本当にこれ見るの?
Natsuko: うん。ピーターの奥さん優しいんだと思いますよ。
Naomi: あ、そうですか。私だったら、え、見るの?とか言うかも。夏子さんだったらなんて言いますか。
Natsuko: え~とか言っちゃいますよね。
Naomi: そうですよね。優しい奥さんで。
Peter: 怖い。怖い怖い。 You lovely ladies are a little scary.
Natsuko: ちょっと、まあダイレクトなんでしょうかね。少し。
Naomi: そうですね。反省します。
VOCAB LIST
Naomi: それでは今日のボキャブラリーを見て行きましょう。最初は選手。
Peter: Player, fighter.
Naomi: The first kanji means choice, selection, election 選ぶ and the second kanji means hands, skill or person. So that means 選手 is a chosen person.
Natsuko: 選ばれた人ということなんですかね。
Naomi: うん。だから Special skill があるという感じですよね。
Natsuko: スポーツの名前の後ろにつけますね。普通、サッカー選手。
Peter: Soccer player.
Natsuko: テニス選手。
Peter: Tennis player.
Natsuko: スポーツの後ろに、選手が、きてなんとかプレーヤーとなることが多いですね。
Naomi: あと、人の名前につけることが多いですね。
Natsuko: あ、そうですね。
Naomi: 今日の会話みたいにピーター・アーツ選手。
Peter: And you can also attach this word to names, Peter Arts 選手。
Naomi: 次は、鳴らす。
Peter: To ring, to sound.
Natsuko: 鳴らす is a transitive verb. Ring something is なになにを鳴らす。 For example, 私はベルを鳴らす。
Peter: I will ring the bell.
Naomi: Intransitive は何でしょうか。
Natsuko: 鳴る
Naomi: Something rings だったら、なになにが鳴る。例えば、ベルが鳴る。
Peter: The bell will ring.
Naomi: 次はゴング。
Peter: Gong.
Naomi: 次の単語は蹴り。
Peter: Kick.
Naomi: これ、ちょっと難しいですよね。これはverbの蹴るからきています。蹴り comes from the verb 蹴る。
Peter: So this is the nominalized form of the verb 蹴る to kick. So if you want to nominalize a verb, first get the masu form, then drop the masu. The masu stem can be used as a noun.
Natsuko: あ、簡単ですね。 Of course not all the nouns are formed this way but this is one way to form a noun from a verb .
Naomi: じゃあ、例えば、動く。
Peter: To move.
Naomi: Masu form は動きます。
Peter: So the noun is
Naomi: 動き
Peter: Movement.
Natsuko: 次はもらう
Peter: To receive, to get.
Natsuko: プレゼントをもらいました。
Peter: I got a present.
Naomi: いいですね。
Natsuko: もらいたいですね。
Naomi: 次は感心する。
Peter: To admire, to be impressed.
Naomi: 次はやられる。
Peter: To be done for, be defeated.
Naomi: これはやるのpassive formですよね。やるか、やられるか。
Peter: To do or be done. Do or Die.
Natsuko: 次は、連打。
Peter: A series consecutive blows. A series of blows.
Natsuko: これは First kanji means series or in a row and the second kanji means hit, strike, beat. So 連打 means continue to hit or series of hit.
Peter: barrage.
Naomi: 次は奪う。
Peter: Snatch.
Naomi: 戦争はたくさんの命を奪う。
Peter: Words take a lot of lives. この動詞はよく受身で使われますね。
Natsuko: 奪われる。
Peter: So it’s often used in the passive.
Natsuko: 次は勝利。
Peter: Triumph, victory.
Natsuko: 次はどうやら。
Peter: Evidently.
Natsuko: Looks like みたいな意味になりますね。どうやら台風が来るらしい。
Peter: It seems like a typhoon is coming.

Lesson focus

Peter: So today’s grammar point, we will be looking at the passive 受身. Naomi Sensei, what do we have first?
Naomi: ゴングが鳴らされました。
Peter: The bell was rung.
Naomi: 鳴らされました。
Peter: Is the passive form of 鳴らす which is a transitive verb. So in this 鳴らす we have す is replaced with さ followed by れる。鳴らされる。
Natsuko: 鳴らす and 鳴らされる。
Peter: That is the plain non-past passive and here we use the polite past passive. So 鳴らされる becomes
Natsuko: 鳴らされました。
Peter: And becoming the passive is now treated as a class 2 verb and conjugated accordingly. So we drop the る and we add the masu form and in this case, we had the polite past ました. Next we had
Natsuko: 後ろに回られて。この passive には trouble とか annoyance というニュアンスが入ることがありますよね。例えば、雨に降られた。
Peter: So in Japanese, the passive can also be used to convey that there is something – there is some trouble or annoyance to the person involved and in the example, 雨に降られた I was rained on but it kind of expresses the fact that the person is now wet.
Natsuko: It rained. I wasn’t happy っていう感じですね。
Peter: So literally this means it was rained but of course what it really means is that unfortunately it rained. Perhaps you had something to do outside. You still have to go outside. You had a game. You didn’t want it raining and it rained.
Naomi: 例えば、犬が逃げる、だと
Peter: The dog ran away.
Naomi: でも、私は犬に逃げられた、だと
Peter: Unfortunately the Dog ran away.
Natsuko: So it expresses a bit of regret or negative feeling.
Peter: About what happened.

Outro

Peter: Okay that is going to do for today.
Natsuko: それじゃあ、また今度。
