INTRODUCTION
Sakura, Yoshi, Peter: おはよう、サンタフェ。
Sakura:さくらです。
Yoshi: よしです。
Peter: Peter here. As always, brought to you by Erklaren, the translation and interpretation specialists. Sakura san
Sakura:こんにちは。
Peter: こんにちは。 Great to have you here although we are pretty sure it’s just for the opening so…
Sakura:ちょっとbusyですみません。
Peter: 最近はどうですか。
Sakura:そうですね、ちょっと忙しい…忙しいです。
Peter: But today you are here, so that’s great. And we are talking about something extremely useful today. We are continuing with “looks like” as in looks like something will happen or it looks like someone will do something as in the appearance that an event will occur or something will take place. Now this is a great, great construction and to really exemplify this, we have a really interesting story today, a little bit sad maybe, but we will let you be the judge. So what we are going to do is play a lesson for you. Again when you are through, stop by JapanesePod101.com. Any questions, leave a comment. Inside the PDF, more detail to bring everything together and inside the learning center, content questions to really reinforce what you learned here. So with that said, here we go.
DIALOGUE
YOSHI: Where's the rose bush I gave you?
夏子: こっち。
NATSUKO: Here.
よし: ひどい!!
YOSHI: That's terrible!!
死にそう!
It looks like it's going to die!
これは僕らの愛の象徴だよ。
This is a symbol of our love.
僕らの愛も死にそう?
Is our love going to die, too?
夏子: 冬だから花も愛も枯れるのよ。
NATSUKO: In winter, flowers and love wither.
よし: じゃ、春には復活するんだね。
YOSHI: But, in the spring they come back.
夏子: ええ、多分他の人とね。
NATSUKO: Yeah, but maybe with someone else.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Natsuko san.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: どうでしたか? What do you think of the conversation?
Natsuko: 復活しますかね?
Peter: English please.
Natsuko: I wonder whether their love will come back.
Peter: Good question. Euchi san, do you think we will hear from these two again?
Yoshi: I hope not. It sounded too serious, kind of you know scary, creepy.
Natsuko: And also this girl sounds too mean. I don’t recommend her.
Peter: I don’t know. Just my type. Okay lots to cover in here. Let’s take a quick look at the vocabulary.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: First word
Natsuko: バラの木
Peter: Rose bush.
Natsuko: (slow)ばらのき (natural speed) バラの木
Peter: Two words and a particle. Literal translation here is rose’s tree. First we have
Natsuko: バラ
Peter: Rose, followed by the particle
Natsuko: の
Peter: And followed by
Natsuko: 木
Peter: Rose, possessive particle, tree. Interpret English, we have rose bush. Next we have
Yoshi: 象徴
Peter: Symbol.
Yoshi: (slow)しょうちょう (natural speed) 象徴
Peter: And in today’s conversation, we had a symbol of love.
Yoshi: 愛の象徴
Peter: Now this is a really useful word because we can use it with lots of other words. How can we say Japan in symbol?
Natsuko: 日本の象徴
Peter: And then we could say 日本の象徴は何ですか?
Natsuko: I think there are several but how about Mt.Fuji.
Peter: All right there it is. Mt.Fuji. Next we have.
Natsuko: 枯れる
Peter: To wither.
Natsuko: (slow)かれる (natural speed) 枯れる
Peter: And in the conversation we had
Natsuko: 花も愛も枯れる。
Peter: So let’s start with the first one. If we just take 花 flower and we pair it with this verb, what do we get?
Natsuko: 花が枯れる。
Peter: Flowers wither. We also have it with the second word from the sentence in the dialogue which was
Natsuko: 愛が枯れる。
Peter: Love withers. Okay we are going to take a more in depth look when we go through the conversation. Next we have
Yoshi: 復活
Peter: Rebirth, return.
Yoshi: (slow)ふっかつ (natural speed) 復活
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: And let’s have a few examples, Natsuko san.
Natsuko: 松井が怪我から復活しました。
Peter: Matsui came back from his injury. So this can be used with injured people when they make a return and in this case, the flower is making a comeback. We will see about that. Okay so let’s take a quick look at the conversation. Yoshi san, what do we have first?
Yoshi: 僕があげたバラの木はどこ?
Peter: Again the first part of this sentence
Yoshi: 僕があげた
Peter: I gave is modifying the noun
Yoshi: バラの木
Peter: Rose bush. I gave rose bush. Now again that’s literal. The rest of the sentence.
Yoshi: はどこ?
Peter: So where is the rose bush I gave you.
Natsuko: こっち。
Peter: Here This is the informal version of こちら。
Yoshi: ひどい。
Peter: Terrible.
Yoshi: 死にそう。
Peter: It looks like it’s going to die. We have the masu stem of the verb plus
Yoshi: そう。
Peter: And we will put them together and look like ones going to do the verb. In the previous lesson, we covered the conjugation of い adjectives. We combined そう with い adjectives by dropping the い and attaching そう. For example, we had the other day looks delicious.
Yoshi: うまそう。

Lesson focus

Peter: Now in today’s conversation, we are looking at doing the same for verbs and when we attach そう to verbs, its interpreted as looks like one’s going to do something. Looks like something will be done and this is actually today’s grammar point. Okay how do we do this? We attach
Natsuko: そう
Peter: To the masu stem of verbs. So what’s the masu stem of this verb [*]
Natsuko: 死に
Peter: And then we just attach
Natsuko: そう
Peter: And that’s it. Looks like it’s going to die. What are we talking about in this sentence?
Natsuko: The rose bush.
Peter: That’s it followed by
Yoshi: これは僕らの愛の象徴だよ。
Peter: So first we have this followed by
Yoshi: 僕らの
Peter: Or we have the personal pronoun for we but it is possessive here so it becomes are
Yoshi: 愛の象徴
Peter: 愛 love symbol. Now when we interpret it into English, this is a symbol of our love. Okay this is followed by
Yoshi: 僕らの愛も死にそう?
Peter: Will our love die too? Then we have
Natsuko: 冬だから、花も愛も枯れるのよ。
Peter: First part of this
Natsuko: 冬だから。
Peter: Winter because it is. Let’s just change the order. Because it’s winter
Natsuko: 花も愛も
Peter: Flowers and love
Natsuko: 枯れるのよ。
Peter: Wither. What’s the verb in there?
Natsuko: 枯れる
Peter: We went over before. So because it’s the winter, flowers and love wither. Oh Natsuko san
Natsuko: Pretty harsh isn’t it?
Peter: Really harsh okay and then Yoshi comes back with
Yoshi: じゃあ、春には復活するんだね。
Peter: The first part is spring and marked by the topic particle は. In spring
Yoshi: 復活するんだね。
Peter: Will come back. Again in Japanese, there is nonpast and past. You have to infer from the context of the sentence what they are talking about. Here we are talking about the future. So in spring, we’ll come back and Natsuko san, what are we talking about here. What will come back?
Natsuko: The flower.
Peter: The flowers.
Natsuko: And
Peter: And
Natsuko: The love.
Peter: Yes but while the translation is correct, maybe the premise isn’t because what did you finish off with or should I say finish him off with.
Natsuko: ええ、多分。他の人とね。
Peter: Yeah maybe with another person. Ouch!

Outro

Peter: Okay in today’s PDF, we have examples for all class III verbs. You definitely want to stop by. Today’s PDF is very detailed. Lots in there, also stop by the learning center. So much to bring it altogether. All right, that’s going to do for today.
Natsuko: じゃ、また明日ね。
Yoshi: またね。
