Natsuko: こんにちは。 なつこです。
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to exchange money. The conversation takes place at a foreign exchange counter.
Natsuko: It's between David and a clerk.
Becky: The speakers are a customer and a shop clerk, so they’ll be using formal Japanese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

David: Excuse me, but can you exchange dollars into yen?
Clerk: Sure. How much are you going to exchange?
David: How much is today's rate?
Clerk: It's 98.50 yen per dollar. It's including the fee.
David: Then, I'd like to exchange 300 dollars.
Clerk: Sure. (interval) Here is 29,550 yen.
David: Can you change this 10,000 yen bill into 1,000 yen bills?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Natsuko: Becky, do you have any recommendations for exchanging money in Japan?
Becky: Well actually foreign exchange counters are not so common in Japan, and even in Tokyo it will take time to find one, so I think it’s more convenient to exchange money at the airport. Rates will be expensive there, but it’s better than trying to find a place once you’re in the city. Of course, you can also buy yen or exchange money at foreign exchange counters at banks, large hotels and inns.
Natsuko: When you’re looking for a currency exchange, just remember this word 両替 meaning “currency exchange.”
Becky: Okay! Now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Natsuko: 98円50せん
Becky: meaning "98.5 yen"
Natsuko: 円 (en) means ”yen,” and せん(sen) means "one-hundredth of a yen."
Becky: But Natsuko, I don’t actually use the word せん when I talk about price in Japan.
Natsuko: Ah yes. The unit せん(sen) is only used for the exchange rate.
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word?
Natsuko: Sure. For example, when you ask... 1ドルはいくらですか。
Becky: “How many yen is to a dollar?”
Natsuko: You might hear a price like 98円50せんです。
Becky: “It's 98.50 yen." Okay, what's the next word?
Natsuko: てすうりょうこみ
Becky: meaning "including fees, including commission"
Natsuko: てすうりょう means "fees" and こみ "including".
Becky: You will often hear this word when you’re receiving a service from a bank, security company, or travel agency, when you will need to pay fees for their service.
Natsuko: Right. When they tell you how much you need to pay in total including the fees or commissions for their services, they will say てすうりょうこみ(tesūryō-komi)...
Becky: meaning "including fees." Natsuko, can you give us an example using this word?
Natsuko: Sure. To check if the commission is included in the price, you can ask.. その価格は、てすうりょうこみですか。
Becky: “Is there commision included in this price?”
Natsuko: If it’s not included, the person will say.. てすうりょうは、べつです。
Becky: “Commission will be charged separately." Okay, now onto the lesson focus.
Lesson focus
|
Becky: In this lesson, you will learn how to exchange money.
Natsuko: When you ask about currency exchange, you can use the sentence structure... A を B に両替してもらえますか。
Becky: So if you want to exchange US dollars to Japanese yen, you can say ..
Natsuko: ドルを円に
Becky: “Dollar into Yen.”
Becky: And, you can add the request, “could you exchange, please?”
Natsuko: りょうがえしてもらえますか
Becky: Can you break down this phrase?
Natsuko: Sure. 両替する is the verb meaning “to exchange” and its te-form is りょうがえして
Becky: Then we had..
Natsuko: もらえますか
Becky: which is the expression to ask someone to do something politely. So altogether, “could you exchange please” is,
Natsuko: りょうがえしてもらえますか
Becky: “Could you exchange US dollars into Japanese yen please”?
Natsuko: ドルを円にりょうがえしてもらえますか
Becky: Natsuko, what if we want to exchange Korean won into yen?
Natsuko: Just replace ドル with ウォン, the currency name for Korean won.
Becky: So, the whole sentence “Can you please exchange won into yen?” would be
Natsuko: ウォンを円に両替えしてもらえますか。
Becky: And another example, "Can you change Singapore dollars into yen?" is,
Natsuko: シンガポールドルを円にりょうがえしてもらえますか。
Outro
|
Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Natsuko: またねー
