Lesson Transcript

Welcome to learn Japanese grammar absolute beginner. In this video series, you learn basic Japanese grammar patterns and phrases through easy to follow audio and visual cues. Here is what we will cover in this lesson. Ready? Let’s get started.
Naomi: 食べて (tabete)
Peter: In this lesson, we will show you how to make the te-form from the dictionary form.
Naomi: Let’s start with class 2 verbs.
Peter: For class 2 verbs, all you need to do is change the final る (ru) to て (te). Let’s illustrate with some examples. Naomi-sensei, can we have a class 2 verb?
Naomi: Sure 食べる (taberu). To eat.
Peter: Drop the final る (ru) syllable.
Naomi: 食べ (tabe)
Peter: Attach て(te) to it.
Naomi: 食べて(tabete)
Peter: And that’s it.
Naomi: Right.
Peter: Can we have another example?
Naomi: Sure. To get up is 起きる (okiru)
Peter: Drop the final る (ru) , replace it with て (te) and we get
Naomi: 起きて (okite)
Peter: Fortunately class 2 verbs are really simple to conjugate. Just replace the final る (ru) with て (te).
Naomi: Right
食べる (taberu)
Peter: To eat.
Naomi: Becomes 食べて(tabete)
起きる (okiru)
Peter: To get up
Naomi: Becomes 起きて (okite)
見る (miru)
Peter: To see
Naomi: Becomes 見て (mite)
寝る (neru)
Peter: To sleep
Naomi: Becomes 寝て (nete)
Peter: Okay on to class 3 verbs, class 3 verbs are irregular. So the te-forms must be memorized. Remember though that there are only two class 3 verbs. They are,
Naomi: する (suru)
Peter: To do, and
Naomi: くる (kuru)
Peter: To come.
Naomi: する (suru) becomes して (shite), and くる (kuru) becomes きて (kite).
Peter: Can we hear them again? What’s the te form of the verb する (suru)?
Naomi: して (shite)
Peter: How about くる (kuru) to come?
Naomi: きて (kite)
Peter: Okay let’s recap with the quiz. The quiz will be multiple choice. We will give you question and three possible answers. Your job is to guess the answer. First question. Which of the following is the te-form of the verb くる (kuru), to come? Listen closely.
Peter: A
Naomi: きいて (kiite)
Peter: B
Naomi: きて (kite)
Peter: C
Naomi: きって (kitte)
Peter: The answer is
Naomi: B, きて (kite)
Peter: The verb kuru, to come becomes きて (kite) in the te-form. Two syllables きて (kite) . How about choice A?
Naomi: きいて (kiite). きいて (kiite) is the te-form of 聞く (kiku) , to listen.
Peter: And it’s actually three syllables.
Naomi: Right.
Peter: 聞、い、て (ki, i, te) So it’s long. 聞いて (kiite) How about choice C?
Naomi: きって (kitte). きって (kitte) is the te-form of 切る (kiru), to cut.
Peter: And it has a short pause in there. 切って (kitte)
Naomi: Right. 切って (kitte)
Peter: That concludes this lesson.
Naomi: 食べて (tabete)
