Let’s get started.
会いません (aimasen)
Peter: Making a formal negative is very simple.
Naomi: Replace ます (masu) with ません (masen)
Peter: So
Naomi: 飲みます (nomi masu)
Peter: To drink becomes
Naomi: 飲みません (nomimasen)
Peter: Don’t drink, won’t drink.
Naomi: 行きます (iki masu)
Peter: To go
Naomi: Becomes 行きません (ikimasen)
Peter: Don’t go, won’t go.
Naomi: あいません (aimasen)
Naomi: あいました (aimashita)
Peter: To make the formal past tense of a verb, change ます (masu) to ました (mashita)
Naomi: To do is します (shi masu)
Peter: Drop masu
Naomi: し (shi)
Peter: And add ました (mashita)
Naomi: しました (shimashita)
Peter: Did
Naomi: So します (shimasu) becomes しました (shimashita)
Peter: Naomi-sensei, another example?
Naomi: 食べます (tabemasu)
Peter: To eat. To form the past tense, replace masu with ました (mashita) . So
Naomi: 食べました (tabemashita)
Peter: Ate.
Naomi: So
あいます (aimasu)
Peter: To meet
Naomi: Becomes
あいました (aimashita)
Peter: Met.
Naomi: 来ます (kimasu)
Peter: To come
Naomi: Becomes 来ました (kimashita)
Peter: Came.
Naomi: あいました (aimashita)
Naomi: あいませんでした (aimasen deshita)
Peter: Let’s take a look at the formal past negative form of a verb. Something like I did not eat or I did not do it. To form the past negative, change ます(masu) to ませんでした (masen deshita) . So to do in the masu-form is
Naomi: します (shimasu)
Peter: To get the past negative, drop masu
Naomi: し (shi)
Peter: Add ませんでした (masen deshita)
Naomi: しませんでした (shimasen deshita)
Peter: Didn’t do. Okay how about to eat in the masu form?
Naomi: 食べます (tabemasu)
Peter: Replace masu with ませんでした (masen deshita)
Naomi: 食べませんでした (tabemasen deshita)
Peter: Didn’t eat.
Naomi: So あいます (aimasu)
Peter: To meet
Naomi: Becomes あいませんでした (aimasen deshita)
Peter: Didn’t meet.
Naomi: 来ます (ki masu)
Peter: To come
Naomi: Becomes 来ませんでした (kimasen deshita)
Peter: Didn’t come.
Naomi: あいませんでした (aimasen deshita)
