Hi, everyone! Did you know, in Japan, there's an interesting toilet facility that might be different from other countries? Let's check it out!
Have you ever seen this toilet before?
And this is how to use the toilet.
(Nagasu toki wa koko o... oshimasu.)
Now, let’s look at the western style toilet in Japan.
(Mite kudasai.)
(Mitame wa mina-san ga fudan tsukatte iru o-tearai to onaji yō na kanji nan desu kedo mo, kōiu botan ga tsuite ite, iroiro na kinō ga tsuite imasu.)
This kanji character means "stop" so this button is stopping button.
お尻 (oshiri) "bottom"; if you need a gentle wash, press here.
Bidet
乾燥 (kansō) "dry"
And you can change the water pressure here, and this is the place of nozzle. So 前 (mae) means "forward," and 後 (ushiro) means "backward."
(Kore wa mizu ga ugoku no o settei dekimasu.)
(Massāji wa o-mizu ga, o-shiri o massāji shitekureru yō ni ugoku botan desu ne.)
(Kono woshuretto kinō no tsuita toire wa, nihon no ippan katei ya, kōkyō no o-tearai de mo miru koto ga dekimasu.)
(Yoku nihon no o-tearai de mikakeru no ga, kono oto, toka otohime toka iroiro arun desu kedo, koko ni wa oto.)
(Kono ongaku māku o osu to, kōiu oto ga nagarete, o-tearai shiteru toki no oto o keshite kuremasu.)
(Kore wa pawā dasshū.)
(Nioi o kesu no o tasukete kuremasu.)
(Kono nagasu, dai, shō, eko shō.)
(Kore wa dorekurai mizu o nagasuka tte iu botan de, tatoeba nanbā tū o shita toki wa kore o osu toka, futsū no o-tearai dattara kore.)
(Nimotsu kake mo arimasu.)
And these are the new standardized graphics for Japanese toilets.
便器洗浄(大) (benki senjō (dai)) "flushing toilet (flush)"
便器洗浄(小) (benki senjō (shō)) "flushing toilet (light flush)"
便ふた開閉 (futa kaihei) "lid opening and closing"
便座開閉 (benza kaihei) "seat opening and closing"
Now you know how to use the toilet in Japan. If you have any question, please let us know in the comment. Thank you! Bye!

Hi Beverley,

Thank you for your comment!

Warm toilet seats are very common in Japan. We have them even at our houses and you can buy one at home appliance retailers?

This would have been encredibly useful when I went to Japan a few years ago. My boyfriend went into the hotel bathroom and was promptly startled by sitting down onto a warm seat!! We're from England, we are used to cold seats. Then I went and sat on it, and was also startled!! I couldn't read enough to understand what all the buttons did but nevermind - we now know for next time!

Hi red,

Thank you for your comment!

The heated toilet seat is called 保温便座(ほおんべんざ/hōn benza).

I agree with you, Steve. Also a pose for Japanese style toilet is very similar to a yoga position for detox.

Western style

"yōshiki" meaning "Western style" is written 洋式 instead of 様式.

I also love Japanese style toilets.

This is an embarrassing topic but for health reasons is important.

To use a Japanese style toilet you must have a certain degree of flexibility in your ankles and hips. You also need strength in your calves and thigh muscles.

When you body is in this squatting position you can make use of gravity better.

As a result, your digestive system works more efficiently.

Although people in the west are not use to Japanese toilets, they are not necessarily bad.

I love Japanese Western style toilets.

When washing yourself with the bidet you do not

need to use much toilet paper.

This is good for the environment!

This is embarrassing, but due to the influence of Japanese toilets, I use a small hand held bidet at home or in a public restroom. This item will help anybody that is of old age, handicapped, or has lost flexibility.
