Lesson Transcript

Hi, everyone! Autumn is a season for sports. Do you know any Japanese traditional sports? Have you ever tried martial arts before? I have been interested in trying martial arts for a while now, and today finally I have a chance to try one of them. Today I'm going to do kendō.
Today, I'm here at 誠道館 (Seidō-kan) which is located in Nippori, Tokyo to have my first kendō experience. Let's go!
(Migite wa tsuba no toko ni…) “The right hand is on the guard…”
(Hidarite wa, kono tsukagashira to) “And the left hand is at a point called”
(iimasu kedo koko ni, koyubi ga…) “tsukagashira and the little finger is…”
(Soshite hidarite wa, daitai heso no mae gurai,) “Then the left hanad is around the front of your navel.”
(ni, hitonigiri, wangurippu akemasu.) “Leave a space the size of a fist.”

(Soshite migite o toremasu.) “And put back the right hand.”
(Sō suru to daitai aite no nodo ni kimasu.) “It comes to an opponent’s throat.”
(Kore ga guddo desu.) “This is…”
(Toriaezu wa men to kote to dō.) “For now, mask, glove, and torso.”
(Go senjo aru?) “Is there a mark?”
(Dō wa koko.) “Here is the torso.”
面 (Men.) “Mask.”
小手 (Kote.) “Glove.”
胴 (Dō.) “Torso.”
(Hai, dō.) “Okay, torso.”

kendō is a kind of Japanese martial art based on traditional workmanship and it means, “the way of the sword”. There are various theories on how kendō began. One is that kendō was developed from traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship. Nowadays, kendō is one of the common club activities at school. Doing kendō can also improve more focus, stronger spirit, and body strengths.
(Honto ni kore ga kekkō atsui desu ne.) “This one is very hot.”

How do you feel?

(Tama ni chiratto miru to pawā ga.) “When I got a glimpse of them.”
The people that have been doing it there for a really long time were really good and they were like really epic and intense. It was really cool. Okay.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I really enjoy and appreciate seeing how Japanese is spoken in actual situations, because the added context is really helpful with my retention.

Also, Kendo looks very cool and would love to try it some day. I have been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about ten years, and have friends that train Judo... they always tell me I should check out Kendo.

It looks like Risa Sensei is a natural at Kendo. Well done!

Cheers,

Jason

I hope that Risa-sensei didn't get hurt in spite of the special equipment.
