Lesson Transcript

Hi, everyone! It's Risa. Today, I'm going to some Japanese summer festival food! It's actually one of my favorite thing to do during summer festival.
Today, I'm here at Hachioji fireworks festival, but before we're going to watch the fireworks festival, let's have a look and enjoy Japanese summer yatai food.
(Yatai) means "food stall".
Here we are!
There are few different ways to call these shops, as you can see, these are - yatai, demise, roten.
These are all small shops where you can buy food and handbag. You can find these shops at Japanese festivals or some other events.
It's usually really really crowded but now, we came too early, and look, not many people!
(De, ato takoyaki kaimashō.)
(Konnichiwa.)
(Hito-tsu, hai, o-negai shimasu.)
(...Hai, dōmo...)
This is Takoyaki.
(Takoyaki)!
Takoyaki is famous in Osaka, but actually, now, you can buy it everywhere. Everywhere in Tokyo, and also you can buy in the festival food stands like I did. I like takoyaki.
And, takoyaki; tako means "octopus"
(Tabechau?)
So inside of this ball, there's a piece of octopus in it.
And this one is bonito flake.
(Dakke?)
(Katsuobushi desu.)
(Itadakimasu.)
(Kami no ke ga...)
(Mada tako ni tadoritsukenai.)
(Hora, tako.)
(Tako saki ni taberu.)
(Naka wa torotoro shite te oishii desu yo.)
I can put butter as much as I want!
(Mitame ga...)
Is it good?
(De, tabun ii kana?)
(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
This is じゃがバター (jaga batā.)
It's a little messy now.
So this is potato and butter on it.
(Jagaimo no... o, ari ga... megu no ashi no toko ni...)
This shop, I think, this is boiled first, and then baked, and then I put the butter on it. Butter and salt on it.
(Taberu yo.)
(Itadakimasu.)
(Ari ga...)
It's good! It was 500 yen.
(Hokuhoku shite te oishii, mada attakai.)
I love potatoes, can I ask for more?
(Okonomiyaki hito-tsu kudasai.)
(Hai, arigatō gozaimasu.)
(Pakkān, okonomiyaki.)
This is like a Japanese savory pancake.
Inside is cabbage, egg, spring onion; it really depends on the shops, but the basic one is with cabbage, egg, spring onion.
(Chotto samechatta kedo.)
(Sōsu no koi aji ga ii desu ne.)
(Kore demo katachi ga nanka sugoi, hirapettai kanji ni natteru, futa-tsu ni otte aru ne.)
(Shōga mo haitte masu.)
(Kono akai no ga shōga desu.)
Ginger.
(Ato tenkasu kana, tenkasu.)
(Mō chotto kakeyo.)
かき氷 (kakigōri).
Blue Hawaii, strawberry.
Here's today's keywords and phrases.
屋台 (yatai) "food stall"
並ぶ (narabu) "line up/queue up"
(-- wa utte imasu ka.) "Do you sell...?"

There are many things I respect about Japan.

One thing is food. The Japanese hygiene standards in the food industry are the best. At the same time Japan has the best customer service in the world. As a result, no matter where you buy food, you always buy fresh and delicious items. From street food stalls to convenience stores, all the way to expensive restaurants, the quality of food is great. I have to be careful not to over eat every time I go to Japan. Based on the food alone you will often want to return to Japan.
