Lesson 15.
Spring into Kanji.
You are ready to learn the kanji that means Spring.
Now it might look hard at first glance, but you’ve already learned the kanji components you need to get it just right.
Now let’s try to draw this kanji. This kanji means spring.
We are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the reading.
Remember there are two readings in kanji? And the first one is the 音読み (on'yomi) , the On reading, the second one is the 訓読み (kun'yomi) , the Kun reading. Long story short, the On reading comes from Chinese and the Kun reading comes from Japanese.
The On reading for this kanji is シュン (shun) and the Kun reading for this kanji is はる (haru)
Now remember the trick that I was telling about? Let’s look at that now.
Here you see three kanji and you know the ひと (hito) kanji, a person. And you know this one, the kanji for the sun. So picture in your mind, three people are walking together on the sunny day in the spring.
Okay now, let’s try to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order. Start from 3, 1, 2, 3 and people, 4, 5, and the sun, 6, 7, 8, 9. Let’s try it one more time. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
Now let’s look at some sample words.
Ta-dah.
The On reading for this kanji is shun. Here we have しゅんらい (shunrai) which means spring thunder.
Next we have the Kun reading. The Kun reading for this kanji is haru. Here we have はるかぜ (harukaze) which means spring breeze.
