Jessi: Hi everyone, welcome to the new JLPT N3 Prep Course, Lesson 8. Jessi here! Joining me as usual is the one and only Naomi-sensei!
Naomi: こんにちは、みなさん。直美です。Hi everyone, Naomi here.
前回は 文法と読解のもんだい4、5&6を勉強しましたね。
Jessi: In the last lesson, we covered Questions 4, 5, and 6 of the grammar and reading comprehension.
Naomi: このレッスンでは、問題7を紹介します。
Jessi: And in this Lesson, we’ll cover Question 7, the last question, of the grammar and reading comprehension section.
Naomi: もんだい7は日本語で書いてある案内やお知らせをみて、情報を見つける問題です。
Jessi: In Question 7, you are tested on your ability to search out necessary information from a block of text in Japanese.
Naomi: 文章はだいたい600字くらいです。
Jessi: The text is about 600 characters long, and there are 2 questions presented to you before the text. You have to read the question first, and then try and find the information you need. Don't worry about trying to read all of it - that would take up too much of your time. You’re searching for only the information you need to answer the question.
Naomi: (The information usually comes in the form of an advertisement, travel brochure, poster, invitation, letter, announcement, etc.)
Jessi: Right, the information usually comes in the form of an advertisement, travel brochure, poster, invitation, letter, announcement, etc. What will really help in this section, I think, is knowing the right vocabulary.
Naomi: そうですね。In advertisements and announcements for trips and events, you're likely to see certain words.
Jessi: If you can quickly spot these certain words, you should be able to get the information you need to answer the questions. So! Without further ado, let's go over some of these useful vocab words.
Naomi: Okay! Remember, this is the reading comprehension section, so you should know the kanji for these words. Please follow along in the PDF.
Jessi: First, words concerning date/time/place and transportation.
Naomi: 日にち (date, as in the month and the day) 日時 (date and time) 期間 (period of time) 場所 (place, location) 最寄り駅 (the closest station) 交通手段 (means of transportation)
Jessi: I could easily imagine any - or all - of these words being on a flyer for an event or something.
Naomi: そうですね!These words give you the vital information like where and when.
Jessi: Let's go into a few more words that are useful when talking about an event.
Naomi: These are all nouns.
Jessi: Yes, Naomi will give you the noun, and I will give you the English translation along with the related Japanese verb. It will probably help to know the related Japanese verb since they usually share a kanji somewhere in there. For example...
Naomi: The first word is 開始
Jessi: This means "start", or 始めること。 The kanji for 始める is in the word for 開始, so that can end up being a big hint as to the meaning. Next one?
Naomi: 終了
Jessi: "end", or 終わること。
Naomi: 出発
Jessi: "departure", or 出ること。
Naomi: 到着
Jessi: "arrival", or 着くこと
Naomi: 集合
Jessi: "gathering, meetup" or 集まること
Naomi: 持ち物
Jessi: "things to bring", or 持って行くもの
Naomi: 服装
Jessi: "clothes" or 着る服
Naomi: 注意事項
Jessi: precautions, or 注意すること。
Naomi: You should be prepared to see some of these words in announcements talking about an event or a trip.
Jessi: Right - and like we said before, the kanji provide major clues. Make sure you are familiar with the kanji contained in these words.
Naomi: There's another pair of words that shows up a lot in this section.
Jessi: Oh, what are they?
Naomi: In fliers that are recruiting people, like help-wanted fliers, you'll often see the words 募集 and 応募.
Jessi: Good point! Let's take a closer look at them both.
Naomi: 募集 is made up 2 kanji - the first one means "recruit", and the second one is the same as 集める, meaning "to collect". So 募集 means "recruiting" or "taking applications".
Jessi: Sometimes after this word, you'll see the kanji 中, meaning "in the middle of".
Naomi: そうですね!That would make 募集中, which means "now recruiting".
Jessi: So on a poster, you might see a noun before 募集中.
Naomi: Right, like the name of a job title or something.
Jessi: So 募集 means "recruiting". If you see this and want to apply... would word would you use?
Naomi: 応募.
Jessi: And this means "application".
Naomi: It's made up of 2 kanji as well. The first one means "apply", or "answer", and the second one is the same one in 募集, which means "recruit".
Jessi: So to sum it up, we have...
Naomi: 募集
Jessi: recuiting, taking applications. and?
Naomi: 応募
Jessi: application
Naomi: You can add する to both of them to make them verbs. 募集する and 応募する.
Jessi: Let's hear a sample conversation using both of these.
Naomi: Sure. うちの会社、今、エンジニアを募集しているよ。
Jessi: Our company is recruiting for engineers, you know.
Naomi: 本当?応募してみようかな。
Jessi: Really? Maybe I should apply for that position.
Naomi: ...というふうに使います。
Jessi: Okay! In this lesson, we went over a lot of vocabulary that you often see on advertisements and announcements written in Japanese.
Naomi: Make sure you become familiar with these words!
Jessi: There are even more in the PDF - and not only that, there are also some practice questions. We've created some fliers in Japanese for you to look over.
Naomi: It's really similar to what you will see on the test, so please test yourself with those questions! Well, that’s all for this lesson! レッスンノート読んでおいてくださいね。
Jessi: As always, thanks for listening everyone, and see you in the next lesson~
Naomi: じゃまた!!
