**Opening**
Jessi: Hi everyone, welcome to Lesson 13 of the New JLPT N3 Prep Course. I'm Jessi and I'm here in the studio joined by...
Naomi:ใใใซใกใฏใใฟใชใใใ็ด็พใงใใHi everyone, Naomi here.
ๅๅใพใงใงใ่ด่งฃใฎใใใ ใ๏ผใใ4ใๅๅผทใใฆใใพใใใญใ
Jessi:In the last lesson, we covered up to Question 4 of the Listening comprehension section.
Naomi:ใใฎใฌใในใณใงใฏใ5ใ็ดนไปใใพใใ
Jessi:And in this Lesson, we'll cover the last question, Question 5 of the Listening Comprehension section.
Naomi:ใใใงใใญใใใใ ใ5ใฏ่ด่งฃใฎๆๅพใฎๅ้กใงใใญใ
**Instructions**
Jessi: Naomi-sensei, please read us the instructions for Question 5.
Naomi: ๅ้ก5ใงใฏๅ้ก็จ็ดใซไฝใๅฐๅทใใใฆใใพใใใ
Jessi: In Question 5, nothing is printed on the question booklet.
Naomi: ใพใใๆใ่ใใฆใใ ใใใใใใใใใใฎ่ฟไบใ่ใใฆใ๏ผใใ๏ผใฎไธญใใใใใ ใใ็ญใใไธใค้ธใใงใใ ใใใ
Jessi: First, listen to the question or a statement and then choose the best response from 1 to 3.
Naomi: So this time, we don't have any visual clues.
Jessi: That's right! There are no pictures, no text, nothing. You have to rely solely on your listening skills to get the correct answer.
Naomi: Also, the statement and choices are only read once.
Jessi: Yes, so you have to listen very closely. Some of the sentences you have to respond to are questions, and some are statements.
One important tip is to try and pick out a question word.
Naomi: Right, like ใฉใ, where, ใใค, when, ใฉใใใฆ, why ใฉใใช What kind of... etc.
Jessi: Here's a technique for answering these kinds of questions. Remember that you only hear the answer choices once. So, when you hear each answer, you should judge whether it is correct or not right away.
Naomi: That's a good idea. Otherwise, you may forgot what the answer choices are.
Jessi: Yes, so use your judgment and determine whether the choices are correct or incorrect right away. That will help a lot.
Naomi: ใใฎใจใใใ ใจๆใใพใใ
***Grammar 1 ใฃใ****
Jessi: In the Lesson Notes PDF, we went over some colloquial expressions and shortcuts that you may encounter on the test. Let's introduce some of them here.
Naomi: The first one is ใฃใ.
Jessi: It's hard to tell just by listening to it, but note that this is actually a small tsu followed by "ke".
Naomi: That's right. ใฃใ is used to confirm information.
Jessi: Yes, and it's also used when the speaker is trying to remember something or recall some kind of information. You hear it used in this way a LOT!
Naomi: ใใใงใใญใใใจใใฐใใใธใงใทใผใใใๅบ่บซใฏใฉใใ ใฃใใฃใ๏ผใ"Jessi, where did you say you were from again?"
Jessi: Mm, that's exactly the nuance it has. Where did you say you were from again? Like, I knew it before at some point, but I forgot.
Naomi: Exactly.
***Grammar ๏ผ short forms****
Jessi: The next thing we're going to cover is...
Naomi: ็ญ็ธฎๅฝข, or "contracted forms", in grammar terms.
Jessi: Right, contractions. Certain sound pairs change, or get shortened, in conversation. This is so common that it is really important to study - of course not only for the test, but because people speak like this in real life alll the time.
Naomi: ใใฎใจใใใ ใจๆใใพใใThat's very true!
Jessi: So let's take a look at some sound changes.
Naomi: Some common ones are ใฆใฏ becoming ใกใ, and ใงใฏ become ใใ.
Jessi: Let's hear them used in some sample sentences.
Naomi: For example, the phrase "I have to go", ่กใใชใใฆใฏใใใพใใ, becomes ่กใใชใใกใใใใพใใ.
Jessi: ่กใใชใใกใใใใพใใ.
Naomi: Right. Another example - the phrase "You shouldn't drink", ้ฃฒใใงใฏใใใพใใ, becomes ้ฃฒใใใใใใพใใใ
Jessi: ้ฃฒใใใใใใพใใใ
Naomi: Yes! So remember these rules - ใฆใฏ becomes
Jessi: ใกใ
Naomi: and ใงใฏ becomes
Jessi: ใใ
Naomi: Great.
Here are some more. ๏ฝใฆใใ becomes ใฆใ, and ๏ฝใงใใ becomes ใงใใ
Jessi: So the ใ in the middle is just dropped.
Naomi: Yes. So, ๅฎฟ้กใใใฆใใ (I'm doing homework) would become ๅฎฟ้กใใใฆใ.
Jessi: ใใฆใใ became ใใฆใใ
Naomi:Right. And ๆณณใใงใใ (I'm swimming) would become ๆณณใใงใใ
Jessi: There's not much difference between them so this should be easy to catch on to. Now, how about ใใ.
Naomi: These are good ones to know too. ๏ฝใฆใใ becomes ๏ฝใจใ, and ๏ฝใงใใ becomes ๏ฝใฉใ.
Jessi: Remember that ใใ attaches to the te form, and means to do something in advanced, or in preparation for something else.
Naomi: Here are some examples. ใพใฉใ้ใใฆใใ (I'll leave the window open) becomes ็ชใ้ใใจใ
Jessi: ้ใใฆใใ becomes ้ใใจใ
Naomi: PDFใ่ชญใใงใใใฆใใ ใใ (Please read the PDF for future convenience) becomes PDFใ่ชญใใฉใใฆใใ ใใใ
Jessi: ่ชญใใงใใใฆ becomes ่ชญใใฉใใฆใ Okay, those are all the ones that we are going to cover for now, but there are still more, like ใฆใใพใ becoming ใกใใ
Naomi: and ใงใใพใ becomes ใใใ
Jessi: Yes, and those are explained in detail in the PDF, so please read up on those as well.
Naomi: ใ้กใใใพใ๏ผOkay, let's get into some practice questions!
Jessi: In the first two, you must choose the correct answer to the questions.
**็ทด็ฟๅ้ก**
Jessi: Here is the first question.
5. ไปๆฅใฎใใ ใใใใฏใฉใใใใงใใใฃใใ
1. ๏ผ๏ผใใผใธใใใงใใใ
2. ใจใใใใใงใใใใ
3. ๏ผๆใใ๏ผ๏ผๆๅใพใงใงใใใ
่งฃ่ชฌ
Jessi: Can we hear the question again?
Naomi: ไปๆฅใฎใใ ใใใใฏใฉใใใใงใใใฃใใ
Jessi: Where did today's lesson start from again? So we're talking about the material covered in the lesson.
Naomi: Right. The key phrase is ใฉใใใ
Jessi: "from where?" And the choices again, please?
Naomi: 1. ๏ผ๏ผใใผใธใใใงใใใ (From page 30) 2. ใจใใใใใงใใใใ (It was at the library) 3. ๏ผๆใใ๏ผ๏ผๆๅใพใงใงใใใ (It's from 9 to 1030)
Jessi: So ใฉใใใ... from where. You may think that it's talking about place, with the word ใฉใ, but it's actually referring to the lesson material. Kind of tricky. But, you also have the word ใใ, "from", in there, so you can expect the answer to also use the word ใใ.
Naomi: Yes, so the correct answer is ๏ผ๏ผใใผใธใใใงใใใ (From page 30).
Jessi: Okay, on to the next question.
6. ใใฎใใใกใผใซ้ใฃใจใใใใ ใใฉใ่ชญใใ ๏ผ
1. ใ๏ผไฝใฎใใจ๏ผใจใฉใใฆใใชใใใ
2. ใใใใใฎใ้ใฃใจใใใใ
3. ใใใพใ ้ใฃใฆใใชใใใใใใ
Jessi: Let's hear the question again.
Naomi: ใใฎใใใกใผใซ้ใฃใจใใใใ ใใฉใ่ชญใใ ๏ผ
Jessi: I sent you an email yesterday - did you read it? If you tripped up on this word ้ใฃใจใใ, just know that it's the contracted version of ้ใฃใฆใใใ.
Naomi: ใใใงใใญใ้ใฃใฆใใใ becomes ้ใฃใจใใ.
Jessi: Let's review the answer choices.
Naomi: 1. ใ๏ผไฝใฎใใจ๏ผใจใฉใใฆใใชใใใ(Hm? What are you talking about? I didn't receive it) 2. ใใใใใฎใ้ใฃใจใใใใ (Yeah, I sent it yesterday.)
3. ใใใพใ ้ใฃใฆใใชใใใใใใ (Ah, I haven't sent it yet. Sorry.)
Jessi: And the answer is...?
Naomi: Choice 1. ใ๏ผไฝใฎใใจ๏ผใจใฉใใฆใใชใใใ(Hm? What are you talking about? I didn't receive it)
Jessi: ๅฑใใฆใใชใ is the negative form of ๅฑใ, to receive or to get. This is used a lot when talking about getting emails. ใกใผใซๅฑใใ๏ผDid you get my email? That kind of thing. ้ใ, in the other hand, is used for sending emails.
Naomi: That's why choice 2, ๆจๆฅ้ใฃใจใใใ and choice 3, ใพใ ้ใฃใฆใใชใ are not appropriate answers.
Jessi: How did you do on those practice questions? Did you get the right answers??
Naomi:ใใผใในใใฉใใฏใซ็ทด็ฟๅ้กใใใใพใใฎใงใ่ใใจใใฆใใ ใใใญใ
Jessi:The bonus track also has more practice questions, so please listen to it to prepare for the test! ใฌใในใณใใผใใ่ชญใใฉใใฆใใ ใใ Please also read the lesson notes! And everyone - good luck on the JLPT!
Naomi:ใใๅ ฑๅๅพ ใฃใฆใพใใWe'll be looking forward to hearing good news from you.
Jessi: Thanks for listening, everyone!
