Jessi: Hello and welcome back to the JLPT Level 4 Last Minute Prep Course. I'm Jessi and I'm here joined by Naomi.
Jessi:That's right... this is the last lesson of this series. In this lesson, we'll be covering the listening section of JLPT level 4
Jessi:In this lesson, we'll be focusing on もんだい2Question2. Let's get started.
Jessi:The way you mark the answers for question 2 of listening section is different from the other sections. You need to mark ただしいCorrect or ただしくない incorrect for each question.
Naomi:It sounds a bit complicated, but don't worry. If you look at the PDF, it will be all clear.
Jessi:Before we give any more information, why don't we listen to the sample question?
Audio:男の人と 女の人が 話しています。今日は 何日ですか。
男:今日は 二十日ですよね。
女:いいえ、違いますよ。明日が 二十日ですよ。
Audio:今日は 何日ですか。
1: 八日です。
:正しくないですから、下の 1を ぬります。
:正しくないですから、下の 2を ぬります。
:正しいですから、上の 4を ぬります。
:正しい答えは 一つです。
Jessi:Did you notice that the question was read twice? We heard it before the conversation and after the conversation.
Naomi:Right. You have two chances. So even if you couldn't catch the question for the first time, there's no need to panic.
Jessi:But if you can catch it the first time, that makes much easier to get the right answer.
Jessi:So, what was the question asking?
Naomi:今日は何日ですか。What's the date?
Jessi:And the answer is...
Naomi:十九日です(the nineteenth) Because the woman said 明日が二十日ですよ。(tomorrow is the twentieth)
Jessi: Let's review the other choices. What's choice 1?
Naomi:ようかThe eighth.
Jessi:This is not correct so you need to mark ただしくないincorrect
Jessi:What's choice 2?
Naomi:二十一日 the twenty first
Jessi:This is not correct either so you need to mark ただしくないincorrect
Jessi:And choice 3 is?
Naomi:はつか twentieth
Jessi:This is not correct so mark ただしくない
Jessi:Then the choice 4 is?
Naomi:十九日 the nineteenth
Jessi:This is the correct answer so you need to mark ただしい correct.
Jessi:Right. There's only one だだしいこたえ correct answer.
Jessi:Right. In もんだい 2, neither the question nor choices are printed on the question sheet, so if you don't concentrate, you may choose the incorrect answer.
Jessi:Please be careful.
Jessi:In this section, question words such as どんな (what kind) どうして(why) どう(how) often show up.OK. Let's listen to the first question.
1:おとこの ひとと おんなの ひとが はなしています。ふたりは、このしゃしんが すきですか。
W:このしゃしん いいですね。
Audio:ふたりはこのしゃしんが すきですか。1. おとこのひとは すきです。 2. おんなのひとは すきです。3. おとこのひとも おんなのひとも すきです。4. おとこのひとも おんなのひとも すきではありません。
Jessi:OK, Naomi-sensei,what's the question again?
Jessi:Do these two people like the photo?
Naomi:The woman said このしゃしんいいですね So it seems like the woman likes the picture. おんなのひとはすきですね。 But the man said 僕はちょっと。。。For me, it's a bit (dot dot dot)... So he doesn't sound he likes it very much.男の人はすきではありませんね。
Actually this ちょっと・・・ is often used in a daily conversation.
Jessi:ちょっと literally means "a little" or "a few", but Japanese people often try to avoid being direct so they say ちょっと・・・ rather than saying no.
For example...なおみさん、こんや映画に行きませんか。Hey, Naomi, want to go to see a movie tonight?
Naomi:こんやですか?あ。。。ちょっと。。。 Tonight? Ah... a little.... Technically I'm saying no.
Jessi:So the correct answer should be the woman likes it but the man doesn't like it. Let's look at the answer choices. Choice 1.
Naomi: おとこのひとは すきです
Jessi:The man likes it. This is false information. So you need to mark ただしくない.
What's choice 2?
Naomi:女の人は好きです。The woman likes it.
Jessi:This is correct isn't it? So you need to mark ただしい for 2.
Let's also look at the other choices too. Choice 3 is?
Naomi:おとこのひとも おんなのひとも すきです
Jessi:Both man and woman like it.
Naomi:も means also or too
Jessi:This is not correct, so mark ただしくない
Jessi:The last choice is?
Naomi:おとこのひとも おんなのひとも すきではありません。
Jessi:Neither the man nor woman like it.This is false information so markただしくない
OK? Let's just skip practice question 2 to 4 and do question 5. The practice questions are all in this lesson's bonus track(???) so make sure to listen to those practice questions too after this lesson.
Jessi:Naomi-sensei, can you read the question?
Jessi:Why does the man like this apartment?
Naomi:The key sentence is ここは、えきから とおくて、あまりべんりじゃありませんが、へやがあたらしくて、とてもひろいです。
Jessi:This place is far from the station and not very convenient. However the room is new and very big.
Naomi:If you could catch あたらしくて、とてもひろいです(New and very big), you can choose the right answer.
Jessi:Let's look at the choices.Choice 1.
Naomi:えきから とおくて、べんりだから。
Jessi:Because it's far from the station and convenient. This is false information.
Naomi:Right. What he said was 駅から遠くて、べんりじゃありません。 It's far from the station and NOT convenient.
Jessi:What about choice 2?
Naomi:せまいくて うるさいから。
Jessi:It's small and noisy.
Naomi:He actually said せまい and うるさい but it was not about the room he's living now. He was talking about the apartment in Tokyo where he use to live. He said...とうきょうのアパートは べんりでしたが、せまくて、うるさくてとても、いやでした。
Jessi:The apartment in Tokyo was very convenient but it was so small and noisy and I didn't like it.OK. Choice 3 is?
Jessi:Because it's new and big. This is correct so mark ただしい。And choice 4 is?
Naomi:とうきょうに すんでいるから。
Jessi:Because he lives in Tokyo.
Naomi:He said...そのまえは、とうきょうに すんでいました。
Jessi:Before, I used to live in Tokyo. So it doesn't sound like he lives in Tokyo anymore.
Naomi:そうですね。たぶん、今、とうきょうにすんでいないと思います。I don't think he lives in Tokyo anymore.
Jessi:All right, so how did you like the JLPT Level 4 Last Minute Prep Course?
Naomi:We hope this course helped you to review basic Japanese grammar.
Jessi: Remember to watch the time carefully when you take the test, and budget your time accordingly! Answer easy questions first, and then you can go back and take your time with the more difficult questions. Best of luck to everyone taking the JLPT this year!

Man took the JLPT N5 I was surprised on how much I knew, because I like to do personal study. Just waiting on the results. Some of the question answer choices are there to confuse people. If you read the sentence then look at the choices there will be no problem. For the listening gotta listen carefully to pick the information that is important.

Hi Willy,

Thanks for the question.

What does 下の1をぬります mean? Does ぬります have any other meanings besides, “To paint?”

>> In this context, ぬります is more like "mark" or "fill in" the numbers.

Hi Michael Richardson,

Thank you for studying with us and asking the question.

Have you listened to the following N4 course?

You might be able to determine if you are ready for N4 instead of N5 after taking this course.

I'm planning on sitting for the JLPT in December and I was planning on starting with N5. However, this course didn't seem too difficult. Is it reflective of what's actually on the N4? Would you recommend sitting for the N4 instead of the N5? I recently finished a 2 year course of study in Japanese and I also lived in Japan for three years in the 90's. Is there any other study material you'd suggest? Your recommendations/suggestions would be helpful.

Hey Jason

I have done the test. You will hear the question twice, and the listening bit once.

after re-winding & listening to the dialogue a few times, I can finally understand it and get to an answer. In the actual exam am I able to do the same? or is there only one chance to listen ie its not possible to rewind and listen again.
