Jessi: Hello and welcome back to the JLPT Level 4 Last Minute Prep Course. I'm Jessi and I'm here joined by Naomi.
Naomi:こんにちは。5回目のレッスンですね。
Jessi:We're at the fifth lesson of this series. In this lesson and in the next lesson, we'll be covering the listening section of JLPT level 4
Naomi:Listening is known as 聴解 in Japanese. 聴解は25分間です.
Jessi:The listening section lasts 25 minutes.
Naomi:もんだいは17あります。
Jessi:There are 17 questions in the Listening section.
Naomi:聴解にももんだい1ともんだい2があります。
Jessi:In the Listening section there are two types of questions.もんだい1 and もんだい2.
Naomi:今日はもんだい1をします。
Jessi:In this lesson, we'll be focusing on もんだい1Question1. Let's get started.
:太鼓の音を入れる*****もんだい1********
Jessi:In もんだい1, you have to listen to a short conversation or paragraph and answer the questions. The questions are not printed in the booklet, only the answer choices. OK, first of all, can you please read the instructions?
Naomi:問題用紙を見て、正しい答えを一つ選んでください。問題用紙 is question booklet. 正しい答え is correct answer or appropriate answer 一つ is one
Jessi: So this means "Look at your question booklet and choose the correct answer."
Naomi:In もんだい1 there are certain types of question that appear every year.
Jessi:What are they?
Naomi: Questions asking about location, asking about the appearance of something or someone and asking the date.
Jessi:To be able to answer the location questions correctly, you need to know vocabulary that indicates location such as
Naomi:うえ"on" した "under" and なか"in"
Jessi:And so on. We made a list in the lesson notes of lesson 1 of this JLPT series. You also need to know the names of basic items at home and at school.
Naomi:Right. Such as ... つくえ desk いす chair 本棚 bookshelf and so on.
Jessi:There's a vocab list in the lesson notes, so make sure to go over it.
Naomi:OK, now let's move on to the Practice question.
Jessi:(Tell where the picture and the choices are)
--------------------------------------------
Audio:男の人と女の人が話しをしています。めがねは どこに ありますか。
女:めがね。。。めがね.。。。あれ?ない。
男:また?つくえは?つくえの上にない?
女:ない。
男:つくえのしたはみた?
女:みた。あ!さっき本をさがしていて・・・。あ!あった。ほんだなにおいたんだ!
Audio:めがねは どこに ありますか。
-------------------------------------------
Jessi:Did you get the answer? Naomi-sensei, what's the answer?
Naomi:4. She put the glasses on the bookshelf. Because she said あ、あった。
Jessi:Here it is or I found them.
Naomi:本棚に置いたんだ
Jessi:I put them on the bookshelf.
Naomi:めがね means glasses.
Jessi:As in glasses that you wear. OK. On to the question asking about the appearance of something or someone.
In Japanese, there are several ways to say "to wear" or "to put on."
Naomi:Right. To wear a shirt is シャツを着る but to wear jeans is ジーンズをはく
Jessi:Right. There are two different words here! きる means To wear on one's upper body, so you'd use it with something like a shirt or jacket. はく on the other hand means To wear on one's lower body, so you'd use it for pants or a skirt, etc.
Naomi-sensei what about the めがね glasses we've just introduced?
Naomi:めがねをかける
Jessi:And for cap or hat?
Naomi:We use the verb かぶる The word for cap or hat is ぼうし so...帽子をかぶる
Jessi:Make sure to memorize those verbs. This list is also in the lesson notes. OK. Let's listen to the next practice question.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Audio:男の人と女の人が話をしています。どのしゃしんをつかいますか。
女: すみません、たなかさん、ちょっといいですか。
男: ええ。何ですか?
女: 次のざっしに、どのしゃしんが良いと思います?
男: うーん。僕は、このかみがながい、ズボンをはいている女の子の写真がいいと思いますよ。
女: ああ、このぼうしをかぶっているのですか。
男: いや、めがねをかけている子。
女: そうですか。じゃ、このしゃしんを使いますね。
Audio:どのしゃしんをつかいますか。
-------------------------------------------
Jessi:Did you get the answer? Naomi-sensei, what's the answer?
Naomi:2. The key phrases are ...髪が長い
Jessi:Has long hair
Naomi:ズボンをはいている女の子
Jessi:a girl wearing pants
Jessi:And there are two girls who have long hair and are wearing pants. ズボン means trousers or pants in Japanese.
Naomi:He also said めがねをかけている子
Jessi:A girl wearing glasses. So the answer should be choice2. ズボン was a bit tricky however most clothing names are from English, so once you get used to the Japanese way of pronouncing English words, it's not too bad. Can we hear the names of some clothes?
Naomi:コート
Jessi:coat...Hum not bad
Naomi:スカート
Jessi:skirt (comment)
Naomi:シャツ
Jessi:shirt...(comment)
Naomi:And it's not the name of an article of clothing, but... ポケット.
Jessi:Pocket.
Naomi:This word often shows up on the JLPT Level 4.
Jessi:OK. On to the question asking the date. As we mentioned in Lesson 1, we strongly recommend that you review how to say the month, date, and seven days of the week in Japanese. Especially the irregular ones. There are 3 (tricky) dates that frequently appear on JLPT Level 4.
Naomi:四日
Jessi:the fourth
Naomi:八日
Jessi:the eighth
Naomi:二十日
Jessi:the twentieth. OK. Let's listen to the next practice question.
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
Jessi:Did you get the answer? Naomi-sensei, what's the answer?
Naomi:3. 八日です。
Jessi:Because the man said
Naomi:じゃあ、来週は?八日か、九日。
Jessi:Well then...how about next week? The eighth or ninth? Then the woman said
Naomi:うーん。九日は、だめ。
Jessi:Well...the ninth is no good. So...the only choice left is the eighth.
Naomi:Right.
Naomi:I think you also need to review relative time expressions such as this week and next week
Jessi:How do you say this week?
Naomi:今週
Jessi:What about the next week?
Naomi:来週
Jessi:All right, and that concludes this lesson. Make sure to join us next time for our last JLPT Level 4 lesson!
