Jessi: Hello and welcome back to the JLPT Level 4 Last Minute Prep Course. I'm Jessi and I'm here joined by Naomi.
Naomi:こんにちは。これは、4回目のレッスンです。
Jessi:This is the fourth lesson of this series. In lessons 2 and 3, we covered grammar questions so in this lesson we'll cover reading comprehension.
Naomi:そうです。どっかいのもんだいです。
Jessi:どっかい is reading comprehension. There are 3 types of questions in the reading comprehension section.
Naomi: Right. もんだい4 もんだい5 もんだい6 です。
Jessi: However, in this lesson, we'll be just focusing on もんだい4 Question 4.
Naomi:ではがんばりましょう。
Jessi:Let's get started.
:*****About もんだい4********
Jessi:もんだい4 is a two-line conversation. You have to choose the most suitable response to the question. Now let's go through the instructions to make sure everyone understands them. Naomi-sensei, can you read the instructions?
Naomi:どのこたえがいちばんいいですか。and the second part is the same as usual. 1・2・3・4から一番いいものを一つ選びなさい。
Jessi:Which answer is the best choice? Choose the best answer from 1 to 4. Can we hear the first part again?
Naomi:どのこたえがいちばんいいですか。どの is which こたえ is answer 一番 is number 1 or best, and いい is good.
Jessi:So this means - which answer is the best?
Naomi:もんだい4は4つあります。
Jessi:There are 4 questions in the もんだい4 section.
:*****Detail もんだい4********
Jessi:In もんだい4, a lot of question words will show up. There's a list in the lesson notes for this lesson so please make sure to check that out.
So now, let's go through and review some of them. What's the word for "where"?
Naomi:どこ
Jessi:The word for "When" is
Naomi:いつ
Jessi:The word for "who" is?
Naomi:だれ
Jessi:The word for "Why" is
Naomi:どうして
Jessi:The word for "How" is
Naomi:どう
Jessi: Okay, now, how do you say "how much"?
Naomi:If you are asking about money that would be いくら
Jessi:When asking about degree of amount as in "how much water..."
Naomi:どのくらい?
Jessi:OK. Now that we've gone over them, let's practice a little. Naomi sensei is going to read a question. So please choose the best response form 1-4.
Naomi:そのくつ、どこで買いましたか。
Jessi:1. かわいいからかいました。 2.はい、かいました。 3.きのう買いました。 4.アメリカで買いました。
Jessi: Can we hear the question again?
Naomi:そのくつ、どこでかいましたか。
Jessi:どこ is where. So そのくつ、どこで、かいましたか。 means "where did you by those shoes?" So the answer should be..
Naomi:4 アメリカでかいました。
Jessi:I bought them in America. Choice1 かわいいからかいました means "I bought them because they're cute". Choice2 is はい、かいました。, which just means Yes. I bought them". And Choice 3 きのうかいました means "I bought them yesterday."
Jessi:Other than question words, examinees are expected to know how to respond to a request or invitation. Here's a sample question.
Naomi:すみません。バターを とってください。
Jessi: 1 はい、そうです Choice2 そうですか Choice3 はい、どうぞ Choice4. どうも
Noami-sensei, can you read the question again?
Naomi:すみません。バターをとってください。
Jessi:Excuse me. Please pass me butter. So the answer should be...
Naomi:Choice3 はいどうぞ。Here you are.
Jessi:Choice1 はいそうです means "Yes that's right." Choice 2そうですか? means "is that right?", and Choice 4 means "Thanks"
Naomi:バターをとってください is a request. For inviting someone to do something, the grammar ---ませんか often appears.
Jessi:The masu stem plus ませんか is used to invite someone to do something politely. For example,
Naomi:行きませんか?
Jessi:Would you like to go? Why don't we go? Okay, here's a sample question.
Naomi:にちようび バーベキューをしませんか。
Jessi:Choice 1. え? いつ しましたか Choice 2. いいですね。しましょう Choice 3. あまり しません Choice 4. いいですね。どこで しましたか
Can you read the question again?
Naomi:Sure.にちようび バーベキューをしませんか。
Jessi:This means something like Why don't we have a barbecue party on Sunday? So the best response should be...
Naomi:Choice2 いいですね。しましょう。
Jessi:Choice 1. え? いつ しましたか means "Huh? When did you have it?" Choice 3. あまり しません means "I don't have them very often" Choice 4. いいですね。どこで しましたか "Sounds good. Where did you have it?"
Jessi:In もんだい4, simple yes/no questions often show up. However the tricky part is, when the answer is no, you have to know the opposite word that was used in the question.
Naomi:Right. For example,まえ "before" and あと "after" もう "already" andまだ"still" "not yet"
Jessi:We have already covered those words in this JLPT series.
Let us give you a sample question.
Naomi:もう、ひるごはんを たべましたか。
Jessi:Choice1. いいえ、もう たべませんでした Choice2. いいえ、ごはんじゃありません Choice3. いいえ。しりませんでした Choice4. いいえ、まだです
Jessi:Can we hear the question once again?
Naomi:もう、ひるごはんを たべましたか。
Jessi:Have you already had lunch? So the answer is..
Naomi: Choice4. いいえ、まだです No. Not yet.
Jessi:Choice1. いいえ、もう たべました"No. I have already eaten." This answer doesn't make sense, right? Choice2. いいえ、ごはんじゃありません "No, it's not rice." and Choice3. いいえ。しりませんでした "No, I didn't know"
Jessi:More practice questions are in the lesson notes. So be sure to check our lesson notes.
Naomi:じゃ、今日は、ここまで。
Jessi:That's all for this lesson.
:*****Closing********
For もんだい5and 6, we made some practice questions so please go to....
:*****byes********
Naomi:じゃ、また。
Jessi:See you next time!
