I hope the following will be of help to others:

本やさんで、女の人が、てんいんにたのんでいます。

本や(bookshop) さん(honorific) で(place of action)、

女の人(woman) が(subject particle)、

てんいん(shop clerk) に(at) たのんで(te form of ask/request) います(exists)。

Note: Use of the honorific さんwith a shop seems kind of strange to American ears,

sort of like saying Mr. Book Shop, but apparently it is quite common in Japanese.

女の人はどの本が見たいですか。

女の人は(as for the woman) どの本(which book) が(subject particle)

見たい(want to see) です(polite copula) か(question particle)。

Continued from previous comment:

すみません、あのたなの上の本を見たいのですが。

すみません(excuse me)、あの(that) たな(shelf) の(possessive particle)

上(top of) の(possessive particle) 本(book) を(object particle)

見たいの(would like to see) です(polite copula) が(but…)。

Note: the の after見たい softens it from “want to see” to “would like to see”.

The が at the end of the sentence acts like a conjunction between phrases,

but it is common for the 2nd half to be left un-spoken.

I would like to see that book but …I can’t reach it. Could you please help me ?

Continued from previous comment:

どの本ですか。

車の本です。

車の本(book of cars) です(polite copula)。

ちょっとまってください。これですか。

ちょっと(a little) まって(wait) ください(please)。

これ(this one) です(polite copula) か(question particle)。

はい、そうです。

はい(yes)、そう(that one) です(polite copula)。

どうぞ。

どうぞ(here you go)。

I really think that the first 3 sentences of this dialogue are too advanced for an “Absolute Beginner” lesson. I’ve been studying for about 6 months and have a vocabulary of about 1200 words and 700 kanji, and I’ve completed all of the “Absolute Beginner” and “Newbie” lessons and I still couldn’t understand them. I was able to get the right answer from just the lines

「どの本ですか」and 「車の本」but it took quite a bit of work to break down and understand the entire dialog.

There is an 800 char space limit on comments, so I'll try to post the breakdown separately.

Hi Conor / コンナ,

Thank you for your comment!

Sorry for confusing you.

[(verb)たい+の(orん)+ですが] is often used when you want to do something but you couldn't do it easily.

Please let me show you another example.

あの本を買いたいのですが、あの店で売っていません。

=I want to buy the book, but that shop doesn't sell the one.

As for が at the end, it indicates the sentence is continuing like "あの本を見たいのですが、取ってもらえますか。(could you please take it for me?)".
