Becky:And I'm Becky. In this lesson, you'll learn how to report a lost item at the train station. |
Kaori:Becky さん、電車に忘れ物をしたことはありますか。 |
Becky:Yes, I have lost something on the train. Actually, I lost my bag. |
Kaori:そのかばんは、見つかりましたか。 |
Becky:Yes, fortunately it was found. |
Kaori: よかったですね。その時、まず何をしましたか。 |
Becky:I went to the lost and found office. |
Kaori:忘れ物センター |
Becky:and reported that I lost my bag on the train. |
Kaori:そうですね。 大きい駅には、忘れ物センター |
Becky:“lost and found office” |
Kaori:がありますから、そこへ行って、忘れ物をしたことを伝えましょう。小さい駅の場合は、駅の事務所 |
Becky:“station office” |
Kaori:に行くといいですよ。 |
Becky:Furuhashi-sensei, what would you say to a station employee first at the lost and found center if you lost your bag? |
Kaori:そうですね。。「すみません、電車にカバンを忘れたのですが。」と言うと思います。 |
Becky:“Excuse me. I left my bag on the train.” |

Becky:Listen to the dialogue and participate when prompted by speaking aloud in Japanese. Use the patterns of Japanese you studied in the Beginner-level lessons. After you speak, you'll hear a model line of dialogue. Your answer does not need to be exactly the same, but do compare your response to the model line. |
In this lesson, you’ll play the role of someone who is reporting a lost bag. Your goal is to report a lost bag to a station employee and give him necessary information. |
Becky:You enter the lost and found office. Tell the station employee that you left your bag on the train. |

Person A: すみません。電車にかばんを忘れたのですが。 |
Station staff: どこから乗りましたか。 |
Becky:He asked where you got on the train. Answer that you got on at Shinjuku station. |

Person A: 新宿駅です。 |
Station Staff: どこに乗っていましたか。 |
Becky:He asked where you were on the train. Answer that you think you were on the first car. |

Person A: えっと、一両目です。 |
Station Staff: どんなかばんですか。 |
Becky:He asked what kind of bag it is. Tell him it’s a black nylon bag. |

Person A: 黒いナイロンのかばんです。 |
Station Staff: 中に何が入っていましたか。 |
Becky:He asked what you had in the bag. Tell him that you have your college textbooks and notebooks. |

Person A: 教科書とノートです。 |
Station staff: わかりました。こちらにお名前と電話番号をお願いします。あとで連絡します。 |
Becky:He asked you to write down your name and phone number, so he can contact you later. After writing it down, end the conversation. |

VOCABULARY AND PHRASES RELATED TO THIS TASK |
Becky:Let’s take a look at some words and phrases useful for this task. The first word is |
Kaori:一両目 |
Becky:“first car” |
Kaori:両 |
Becky:It's a counter to count train cars. |
Kaori:目 |
Becky:is a suffix for making ordinal numbers. So, the second car would be |
Kaori: 2両目 |
Becky:If you don’t know the word |
Kaori:一両目 |
Becky:you could say |
Kaori:一番前 |
Becky:which means “in the front”. If you don’t know which car you were on, but if you think you were somewhere in the middle, you can say |
Kaori: 真ん中ぐらい |
Becky: “somewhere in the middle”. And if you were “somewhere in the front” you can say |
Kaori:前の方 |
Kaori: 方 |
Becky:means “direction” or “somewhere in a certain direction” |
Kaori:前の方 |
Becky:If you were “in the back”, you can say |
Kaori:後ろの方 |
Lesson focus

Becky:This task requires a few key phrases. The first one is, "Excuse me. I left my bag on the train.” |
Kaori:すみません。電車にかばんを忘れたのですが。。。まずは、「すみません。」で話し始めるのがいいですね。 |
Becky:Yes, it would be awkward to start the conversation without it. The next sentence is |
Kaori:電車にかばんを忘れたのですが。。 |
Becky:The first part |
Kaori:電車にカバンを忘れた |
Becky:means “I left my bag on the train” . |
Kaori:そのあとに、「のですが」がついていますね。 |
Becky:Adding |
Kaori:のですが |
Becky:at the end of this sentence, can soften the expression by using it as the reason for needing help. This also makes it more polite. |
Kaori:この場合、「電車にカバンを忘れた」は、状況 |
(Becky:situation) |
ですね。その文に「のですが」を付けて、「電車にカバンを忘れたのですが」というと、助けを求めたり、何かお願いをしたいという意味になります。 |
Becky:So, in this case, the first part |
Kaori:電車にカバンを忘れた |
Becky:explains the situation. And by saying |
Kaori:電車にカバンを忘れたのですが |
Becky:you can imply you need help. Let’s practice. You are speaking to the station staff. Report an umbrella you left on the train. |

Kaori:すみません。電車にかさを忘れたのですが。 |
Becky:Report a coat you left on the train. |

Kaori:すみません、電車にコートをわすれたのですが。 |
Becky:The next key expression is “It’s a black nylon bag.” |
Kaori:黒いナイロンのカバンです。 |
Kaori:このように、色 + 素材 + の + type の順番で言うといいでしょう。 |
Becky:So, the word order in Japanese should be color plus material plus |
Kaori:の |
Becky:plus the type of bag. Imagine you left a red leather bag on the train. “Leather” is |
Kaori:革 |
Becky:Describe your bag. |

Becky:You left a white cloth bag on the train. “Cloth” is |
Kaori:ぬの |
Becky:Describe your bag. |

Becky:If your bag is a green nylon bag, you can say |
Kaori:緑のナイロンのカバンです。 |

Becky:The word for “green” is a noun in Japanese, so you need to add |
Kaori:の |
Becky:when you use it like an adjective. Other examples are |
Kaori:オレンジ色の, 灰色の, ピンクの |
Becky:So, some colors are adjectives, but the others aren’t. The color adjectives are |
Kaori:黒い、しろい、あかい、青い、黄色い |
Becky:and |
Kaori:茶色い |

Becky:Now try to participate in the dialogue using some alternative words you learned in this lesson. This time you’ll play the role of a person who left a brown leather bag on the train. Use as many of the expressions you learned in this lesson as possible. Let's get started! |
