DIALOGUE
The Red Monster That Cried
A long, long time ago over the mountain and through the pass deep in the mountains away from the people, there lived a Red Monster and Blue Monster. The Red Monster liked human children and he was always thinking about how to become friends with them.
I am such a nice Red monster. I wonder why nobody will come play with me. I even prepared snacks and drinks.
Hey Red monster, you want to be friends with the human kids that bad?
Yeah I do.
Well I have a good idea. Listen to this.
Ahh…
Then.
Yeah.
What do you think?
Yeah, yeah.
Got it. Okay let’s go take a bath.
The next day some kids are playing in the forest. If you want to play hide n’ seek, stand there, Juggling Hopscotch, we’ve got it all. Everyone get over here and let’s have some fun.
Arr, arr, arr. You loud little brats. This is my exercise time. Go away 1, 2, 3, 4, arr, arr, arr, 5, 6, 7, 8,arr, arr, arr.
Help.
Umph, umph, umph. you evil Blue monster, stop your exercise soon. Otherwise I will do this 1, 2, 3, 4 ah, ah, ah, 5, 6, 7, 8, ah, ah, ah.
I am sorry, forgive me powerful Red monster. I won’t do it again. So please forgive me.
Relax kids. The evil Blue monster is gone. He’s gone back into the mountains.
Thank you Red monster. The Red monster that is gentle and strong and beat up the evil blue monster, let’s play together. Will you be the monster for Hide n’ Seek.
Is it really okay?
Yeah everyone is having a good time playing and then the first star appears. The first stars appeared. It’s time to go home. Goodnight Red monster, see you tomorrow. Goodnight everyone. See you tomorrow.
Everyone’s gone home. That was really fun. Goodnight kids. See you tomorrow. Okay I wonder what Blue is doing. Hah! What’s a letter doing in a place like this?
Dear Red, if the kids found out that you were friends with the evil Blue monster, you’d lose them. That’s why we can never meet again. I will go far away. Please find a way to get along with the kids. Goodbye Blue.
Blue’s got away. He was such a good friend and now he’s gone.
The Red and Blue monster never saw each other again.

Outro

Peter: Okay Sakura san, we are back.
Sakura: It’s so touching, it’s so touching.

Sakura: The Blue monster is too nice. Yeah sorry ちょっとすいません。
Peter: And – Yoshiaki and Take san they really, really brought it to life but anyway stop by japanesepod101.com. That’s going to do for today.
Sakura: またね。

Mina-san, we hope you were also moved by this touching story! The English female voice was that of Megumi Sotherden, more to come on her! The male speaker was played by Marky Star. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

The first time I heard of this story was in Re: Zero, and I kinda thought that it was something made up by the author to parallel the plot. I had no idea it was a real Japanese folktale! It's so much sadder now.

Oh and I just noticed that 'yatsukeru' isn't in the jpod dictionary, and neither is 'nidoto'.

Tachikoma-san,

‘Koe’ comes from a verb, "koeru" meaning "to go over."

なれる is the potential form of なる meaning "to become."

"一風呂" means "to take a bath quickly or without taking so much time.

"mono" of ‘Kakurenbo suru mono’ means "a person.

‘yubi tomare’ should be "yobi ni tomoare" but "ni" is omitted. This is the Japanese old custom kids were doing. When a kid proposes to do something and makes their finger up and say "kono yubi tomare", then other kids, if they agree with the proposal, come and grasp the finger.

"nidoto" is used in a form of "nidoto ~nai" and mean "never."

‘yatsukeru’ is a verb meaning "to beat out."

一番星が出てきます From the spoken dialogue it sounds like ‘hoshi’ is pronounced ‘boshi’ in this case? → That's right!

手紙が落ちている - Which is translated as ‘what’s a letter doing in a place like this’? → This translation is for the whole sentence, おや、こんなところに、手紙が落ちている。So, 落ちている is not translated as a strictly meaning, but the speaker's wonder why a letter is down here is translated.

Hope that is of any help to you!:nihon:

I've been trying work work my way through the mukashibanashi stories, and while the Tengu one is pretty much impenetrable due to the crazy difficulty level and lack of a learning centre, this one was quite a bit more accessible.

Still, I have some questions about this one too!

やまをこえ - 'over the mountain'. 'Koe' means voice??

いつもどうやったらともだちになれるかかんがえていました - 'he was always thinking about how to become friends with them.' Which 'nareru'is this? - 慣れる, 馴れる, or 狎れる?)

一風呂 - 'bath' How is this different from 'furo'?

かくれんぼするものこのゆびとまれ。おてだま、いしけり、なんでもあるよ。みんなおいでよ。 - 'If you wanna play hide and seek, stand here. Juggling, hopscotch, we've got it all! '. 'Kakurenbo' was not in the vocab list, but means 'hide and seek', but I'm stuck on the rest of the sentance. 'Kakurenbo suru mono' What does this mean? 'Doing hide and seek thing'? 'yubi tomare' - 'this finger must stop here'?! So that's 'doing the hide and seek thing, this finger stop here!'.. Curious...!

'さもないとこうしてやるぞ' What is the verb used at the start of this sentance?

'もう二度としない' What does nidoto mean?

'わるいあおおにをやっつけIs the verb here 'yatsukeru'?

一番星が出てきます From the spoken dialogue it sounds like 'hoshi' is pronounced 'boshi' in this case?

手紙が落ちている - the verb is 'ochiru'? Which means 'to fall down, to drop, (2) to fail (e.g., exam), (3) to crash, to degenerate, to degrade, (4) to fade, to come out (e.g., a stain)' So this literally means 'a letter has fallen down'? Which is translated as 'what's a letter doing in a place like this'?

Thanks!
