Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I'm Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We've found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you'll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you'll learn conversational phrases to use when apologizing to someone. After watching this video, you'll be able to apologize and say what you're apologizing for.
Now, let's take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
おくれて、すみません。 (Okurete, sumimasen.)
だいじょうぶです。 (Daijōbu desu.)
Once more with the English translation.
おくれて、すみません。 (Okurete, sumimasen.)
“I'm sorry for being late.”
だいじょうぶです。 (Daijōbu desu.)
“Don't worry about it.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "I'm sorry [reason]."
The pattern is:
[reason]、すみません。 ([reason], sumimasen.)
"I'm sorry [reason].".
For example:
"I'm sorry for being late."
おくれて、すみません。, おくれて、すみません。 (Okurete, sumimasen., Okurete, sumimasen.)
Now, how do you respond that it's okay?
だいじょうぶです。 (Daijōbu desu.)
"Don't worry about it."
Listen to it again:
だいじょうぶです。, だいじょうぶです。 (Daijōbu desu., Daijōbu desu.)
"Don't worry about it."
