In this lesson, you'll learn how to use essential social expressions, such as "thank you."
This is Ben Lee, and he's on the train. A fellow passenger drops his wallet as he exits the train. Ben picks up the wallet and chases after the man.
He calls to the man by saying,
"Excuse me."
すみません。(Sumimasen.)
Listen to the following three short dialogues between Ben and the man.
すみません。(Sumimasen.)
はい。(Hai.)
Ben hands the man the wallet.
ありがとうございます。 (Arigatō gozaimasu.)
どういたしまして。 (Dōitashimashite.)
Ben turns to board the train, but the doors shut.
すみません。(Sumimasen.)
だいじょうぶです。(Daijōbu desu.)
Once more with the English translation.
すみません。(Sumimasen.)
"Excuse me."
はい。(Hai.)
"Yes?"
Ben hands the man the wallet.
ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
"Thank you."
どういたしまして。 (Dōitashimashite.)
"You're welcome."
Ben turns to ride the train, but the doors shut. The man apologizes.
すみません。(Sumimasen.)
"I'm sorry."
だいじょうぶです。(Daijōbu desu.)
"It's alright."
