POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Kat: So it was Josh's birthday. ジョシュの誕生日でしたね。(Joshu no tanjōbi deshita ne.)
Naomi: そうです。ホストファミリーはよさそうな人たちですよね。(Sō desu. Hosutofamirī wa yosasō na hito-tachi desu yo ne.) It seems Josh has got a great host family, doesn't it?
Kat: そうですよね!やさしそうですね。(Sō desu yo ne! Yasashisō desu ne.) It seems like the mother is the director of operations, doesn't it? She's the organizer! She was telling her husband and her son what to do.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) Yes. ジョシュは群馬に住んでいると言っていましたね。群馬の女の人は強いそうです。これは有名です。(Joshu wa Gunma ni sunde iru to itte imashita ne. Gunma no onna no hito wa tsuyoi sō desu. Kore wa yūmei desu.)
Kat: Yeah, I remember Josh was saying that he lives in Gunma. And Gunma is known for strong women? Is that what you are telling me? (laugh)
Naomi: Yes. My friend from Gumna told me that. (laugh)
Kat: Really? I've actually heard that before! You know.
Naomi: 本当?(Hontō?)
Kat: Ah, Gunma has a textile weaving industry, and apparently in the old days the weavers were women. They could make money by themselves from their weaving work, without needing a husband to provide for them, so they were called "strong". Economically strong.
Naomi: なるほどね。 面白いですよね。(Naruhodo ne. Omoshiroi desu yo ne.)
Kat: 面白い。(Omoshiroi.) Interesting.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Kat: OK. So now, let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first one we are going to look at is?
Naomi: 冷蔵庫 (reizōko)
Kat: “fridge”, or in American English, I believe, "refrigerator". It's NOT れいぞこ (reizoko). This word contains a long “ō” sound so be careful.
Naomi: そうですね。れいぞーこ。(Sō desu ne. Reizōko.) Actually the first れい (rei) part becomes れー (rē), れーぞーこ (rēzōko).
Kat: れーぞーこ (rēzōko)
Naomi: Right.
Kat: Next.
Naomi: 火をつける (hi o tsukeru)
Kat: “to set a fire”, “to light a fire”, or “to light something”
Naomi: 火 (hi) is fire, を (o) is an object marker, つける (tsukeru) is "to turn on" "to switch on" or "to light".
Kat: Right. And つける (tsukeru) has various meanings. When it’s used with 火 (hi), which means "fire", it becomes “to light (something)”. The something is marked by に (ni).
Naomi: Here's a sample sentence.
その男はタバコに火をつけた。(Sono otoko wa tabako ni hi o tsuketa.)
Kat: “That man lit a cigarette.”
Naomi: The opposite word of つける (tsukeru) is 消す (kesu).
Kat: 消す (kesu) can mean “put out”, “turn off”, or “erase”, depending on the context.
Naomi: Right. So 電気を消す (denki o kesu) means...
Kat: "to turn off the light"
Naomi: 火を消す (hi o kesu) means ...
Kat: "to put out the fire"
Naomi: はい、そうです。(Hai, sō desu.)

Lesson focus

Kat: The focus of this lesson is how to say “do something in advance.”
Naomi: Yes. You'll learn the usage of 〜ておく (-te oku).
Kat: Meaning "to do something in advance for future purposes”.
Naomi: Let's check the formation.
Kat: The formation is “[-te form of a verb] plus おく (oku)”. How do you say… “to buy”?
Naomi: 買う (kau)
Kat: And the -te form is?
Naomi: 買って (katte)
Kat: Attach おく (oku).
Naomi: 買っておく (katte oku)
Kat: "to buy something in advance"
Naomi: Here is a sample sentence. チケットを買っておく。(Chiketto o katte oku.)
Kat: “I'll buy a ticket in advance.” Listeners, repeat.
Naomi: チケットを買っておく。(Chiketto o katte oku.)
Kat: (pause) Listeners, please say "I'll buy a ticket in advance" in Japanese.
Naomi: (pause) チケットを買っておく。(Chiketto o katte oku.)
Naomi: Here's a longer sample sentence. 明日、映画に行くので、今日チケットを買っておく。(Ashita, eiga ni iku node, kyō chiketto o katte oku.)
Kat: “Since I’m going to see a film tomorrow, I’ll buy tickets in advance today.” Let's do one more example. How do you say "to clean", as in "to clean the room"?
Naomi: 掃除する (sōji suru)
Kat: And the -te form is?
Naomi: 掃除して (sōji shite)
Kat: Attach おく (oku).
Naomi: 掃除をしておく (sōji o shite oku)
Kat: “to clean in advance”
Naomi: Here is a sample sentence. 部屋を掃除しておく。(Heya o sōji shite oku.)
Kat: "I'll clean the room in preparation." Listeners, repeat.
Naomi: 部屋を掃除しておく。(Heya o sōji shite oku.)
Kat: (pause) Listeners, say "I'll clean the room in preparation."
Naomi: (pause) 部屋を掃除しておく。(Heya o sōji shite oku.)
Here's a longer sentence. 友達が来るので、部屋を掃除しておく。(Tomodachi ga kuru node, heya o sōji shite oku.)
Kat: “Since my friends are coming over, I'll clean my room in preparation.” And now, let's recap this lesson with a quiz. Naomi-sensei is going to say a phrase. Your job is to complete the sentence using 〜ておく (-te oku).
Naomi: 明日、テストがあるので・・・(Ashita, tesuto ga aru node…)
Kat: (pause) I have a test tomorrow, so... Naomi-sensei. Could you give us one possible answer?
Naomi: 明日、テストがあるので、勉強しておく。(Ashita, tesuto ga aru node, benkyō shite oku.)
Kat: “Since I have a test tomorrow, I'll study in preparation.”
OK. How did you do? Of course there are many other possible answers. If you want us to check if your sentence is correct, leave us a comment and we'll check it for you! It’s really easy. Go to the lesson page on JapanesePod101.com, enter your comment and name.
Naomi: And that’s it!
Kat: Go to JapanesePod101.com and leave us a comment.
Naomi: じゃ、また。(Ja, mata.)
Kat: Bye, everyone!
