POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: キャットさんは、どこの銀行を使っていますか。(Kyatto-san wa, doko no ginkō o tsukatte imasu ka.)
Kat: 私はゆうちょと、三菱東京UFJ銀行を使っています。(Watashi wa Yūcho to, Mitsubishi Tōkyō Yūefujei Ginkō o tsukatte imasu.) I use the Japanese Post Office Bank and Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ Bank.
Naomi: ATMはよく使いますか。(Ētīemu wa yoku tsukaimasu ka.)
Kat: 使います!日本は現金を持っていないと困ることがありますので、出かける前に必ず現金を引き出します。(Tsukaimasu! Nihon wa genkin o motte inai to komaru koto ga arimasu node, dekakeru mae ni kanarazu genkin o hikidashimasu.) I use Japanese cash machines all the time. Japan is still quite a cash-based society, so if you don't have cash on you you could be in trouble. I always take out money before I go anywhere.
(Sō desu.)
Naomi: あー、そんなことできるんだ。(Ā, sonna koto dekiru n da.)
Kat: はい。(Hai.) When I was studying abroad for the first time, I didn't have a Japanese bank account, so I used my British cash card in CityBank ATMs in Tokyo to directly withdraw money from my UK account. You get a much better rate doing that way than at a foreign exchange, so I definitely recommend it to anyone coming to Japan who needs to change money!

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Kat: OK so now, let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first one we are going to look at is?
Naomi: 引き出す (hikidasu)
Kat: 引き出す (hikidasu) is "to withdraw (money)". This word, 引き出す (hikidasu) is made up of two verbs put together.
Naomi: そうですね。まず、引く。(Sō desu ne. Mazu, hiku.)
Kat: 引く (hiku) means “to pull” and secondly?
Naomi: 出す (dasu)
Kat: Which means “to take out.” The masu-stem of this verb, 引き出し (hikidashi) is used as a noun meaning “withdrawal (of money).”
Naomi: じゃ、銀行で便利な単語を勉強しましょうか。(Ja, ginkō de benri na tango o benkyō shimashō ka.)
Kat: That's a really good idea. Let us introduce some useful vocabulary at a bank.
Naomi: まず、口座。(Mazu, kōza.)
Kat: “bank account”. It's not こ う ざ (ko u za) but こーざ (kōza).
Naomi: Right, こーざ (kōza). So… 銀行口座 (ginkō kōza) means
Kat: "bank account". OK. What's the next word?
Naomi: 残高 (zandaka)
Kat: “remaining balance”
Naomi: 残高は口座に残っているお金です。(Zandaka wa kōza ni nokotte iru o-kane desu.)
Kat: So 残高 (zandaka) refers to the amount of money left in an account. And that's why the word has the kanji 残る (nokoru) which means "to remain."
Naomi: そうです。残っているお金。(Sō desu. Nokotte iru o-kane.)
Kat: Next, let's take a look at the usage of ...
Naomi: ございます (gozaimasu)
Kat: ございます (gozaimasu) is the polite way of saying the verb ある (aru) “to have”, “to exist (of inanimate thing)”. Now, Naomi-sensei, how do you say "I have a question"?
Naomi: 質問がある。(Shitsumon ga aru.)
Kat: Replace ある (aru) with ございます (gozaimasu).
Naomi: 質問がございます。(Shitsumon ga gozaimasu.)
Kat: This is the very polite way to say that you have a question.
Naomi: あります (arimasu) is the masu-form of the verb ある (aru), so...質問があります (shitsumon ga arimasu) is polite but 質問がございます (shitsumon ga gozaimasu) is even more polite.
Kat: Hm. OK. Let's do a little recap. How do you say "I have a question" in an informal situation?
Naomi: 質問がある。(Shitsumon ga aru.)
Kat: How about a formal situation?
Naomi: 質問があります。(Shitsumon ga arimasu.)
Kat: How about an even more formal situation?
Naomi: 質問がございます。(Shitsumon ga gozaimasu.) Sounds super polite.
Kat: It really does.

Lesson focus

Kat: The focus of this lesson is
Naomi: 復習!(Fukushū!)
Kat: Right. Review. In this lesson, you are going to review the grammar you’ve learned in this whole series.
Naomi: Let's review ても (temo), meaning "even if".
Kat: Can we hear a sentence from a dialogue?
Naomi: はい。暗証番号を入れても、お金が引き出せない。(Hai. Anshō bangō o irete mo, o-kane ga hikidasenai.)
Kat: "Even if I enter my PIN number, I can’t withdraw any money." Let's break this sentence down.
Naomi: 暗証番号 (anshō bangō)
Kat: "PIN number"
Naomi: を (o)
Kat: "object marker"
Naomi: 入れても (irete mo)
Kat: the -te form of the verb 入れる (ireru), "to insert" and ても (temo) means "even if”, so…
Naomi: 暗証番号を入れても (anshō bangō o irete mo)
Kat: means "even if I insert the PIN", followed by…
Naomi: お金が (o-kane ga)
Kat: "money” and subject marking particle が (ga)
Naomi: 引き出せない (hikidasenai)
Kat: the negative potential form of 引き出す (hikidasu), "to withdraw money". So 引き出せない (hikidasenai) means "cannot withdraw money". Can we hear the sentence altogether, once again?
Naomi: はい。暗証番号を入れても、お金が引き出せない。(Hai. Anshō bangō o irete mo, o-kane ga hikidasenai.)
Kat: "Even if I put my PIN number in, I can't withdraw any money." So now, listeners, listen and repeat.
Naomi: 暗証番号を入れても、お金が引き出せない。(Anshō bangō o irete mo, o-kane ga hikidasenai.)
Kat: (pause) Listeners, say "Even if I put my PIN number in, I can't withdraw any money" in Japanese.
Naomi: (pause) 暗証番号を入れても、お金が引き出せない。(Anshō bangō o irete mo, o-kane ga hikidasenai.)
Kat: So Naomi-sensei, what are we going to review next?
Naomi: よう (yō), meaning “look like”.
Kat: This grammar よう(yō) hasn't been introduced yet in the audio portion. But it's very similar to みたい (mitai) meaning look like and there's a detailed write up in lesson 24. Now in the dialogue we have...
Naomi: 残高がないようです。(Zandaka ga nai yō desu.)
Kat: "It looks like you have no remaining balance." Let's look at the components of this sentence.
残高 (zandaka) means "remaining balance", が (ga) marks the subject, ない (nai) means "doesn't exist", よう (yō) means "look like" and です (desu) is a copula.
Now can we hear the sentence one more time?
Naomi: 残高がないようです。(Zandaka ga nai yō desu.)
Kat: "It looks like you have no remaining balance." So now, listeners, listen and repeat.
Naomi: 残高がないようです。(Zandaka ga nai yō desu.)
Kat: (pause) Listeners, say "It looks like you have no remaining balance" in Japanese.
Naomi: (pause) 残高がないようです。(Zandaka ga nai yō desu.)
You can rephrase this sentence as 残高がないみたいです (zandaka ga nai mitai desu.). It sounds a little less formal though.
Kat: So in the dialogue, Josh couldn't take out money from his account. And that was because he doesn't have enough money left in his account?
Naomi: そうですね。残高がないと、引き出せないですよね。残念でした。(Sō desu ne. Zandaka ga nai to, hikidasenai desu yo ne. Zannen deshita.)
Kat: ちょっと恥ずかしいですね。(Chotto hazukashii desu ne.) That's kind of embarrassing, to have made all that fuss to the bank employee... and it was his own fault!
Naomi: 大丈夫なんですかね・・・もうすぐお正月なのにね・・・。(Daijōbu nan desu ka ne… Mō sugu o-shōgatsu na noni ne…) I wonder if Josh could spend a happy new year without any money?!
Kat: あああ、もうすぐお正月ですねー。(Ā, mō sugu o-shōgatsu desu nē.) It's going to be New Year soon, isn't it? ま、お金がなくても、大丈夫です。・・・わからないけど。 (Ma, o-kane ga nakute mo, daijōbu desu. …Wakaranai kedo.)
Naomi: いいかげん。ジョシュさん、かわいそう・・・。(Ii kagen. Joshu-san, kawaisō…)
Kat: Poor Josh. Ah, by the way, Naomi-sensei. What do we say before the new year? I mean you can't say あけましておめでとう (akemashite omedetō) before the new year has actually become, right?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) We say よいお年を (yoi o-toshi o).
Kat: よい (yoi) good, お年 (o-toshi) year. So よいお年を (yoi o-toshi o) means "Have a good new year!"?
Naomi: Right. よいお年を。(Yoi o-toshi o.)
Kat: So listeners,we just want to say thank you so much for listening until the very end of this series.
Naomi: 聞いてくれてありがとうございました。では、みなさん、よいお年を。(Kiite kurete arigatō gozaimashita. Dewa, mina-san, yoi o-toshi o.)
Kat: よいお年を。(Yoi o-toshi o.)
