POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Peter: 雨男。雨女。晴男。晴女。 (Ameotoko. Ameon'na. Hare otoko. Hare on'na.) Are they common words?
Naomi: うん。と、思いますよ。(Un. To, omoimasu yo.) I think so. 雨 (Ame) is rain and 男 (Otoko) is a man. So 雨男 (Ameotoko) is rain man. The man who brings rain.
Peter: Well yes it’s a very Japanese thing.
Naomi: え、ないんだ。英語では。 (E, nai nda. Eigode wa.)
Peter: Well actually like you know rainmaker, it sounds like something good but in Japanese, it’s something not good.
Naomi: No, よくないですね。 (Yokunai desu ne.) It’s not good at all.
Peter: It’s used to refer to somebody who brings the rain on a day that the people want to have a picnic or do something outdoors.
Naomi: そう、そうなの。 (Sō,-sōna no.) 私はね、雨女なんですよ。 (Watashi wa ne, ame on'na nandesu yo.)
Peter: So you are a rain bringer. You are a rain girl.
Naomi: そう。いつも雨ですね。 (Sō. Itsumo ame desu ne.)
Peter: So when everyone wants to do something fun outside and Naomi San is invited, it rains.
Naomi: So だから (Dakara) don’t invite me to the picnic or….outside event.
Peter: Yeah so just to recap quickly, this is a term used in a negative way to refer to somebody who is always present when it’s raining and the weather is not so good.
Naomi: そうですね。雨男。雨女。それから、反対の言葉があります。 (Sōdesu ne. Ameotoko. Ame on'na. Sorekara, hantai no kotoba ga arimasu.)
Peter: So if we have the bad, we have the good. What is the opposite of this?
Naomi: 晴男、それから晴女ですね。 (Hare otoko, sorekara hare on'na desu ne.)
Peter: Sunny boy and sunny girl.
Naomi: うん、そう。これはすごく (Un,-sō. Kore wa sugoku) positive connotation.
Peter: Now these are words you can’t find in a regular dictionary.
Naomi: Umm I couldn’t find them in the dictionary. ピーターさんは?雨男?晴男? (Pītā-san wa? Ameotoko? Hare-otoko?)
Peter: いや、晴男と聞いたことないので (Iya, Hare-otoko to kiita koto nainode) I have never heard the expression 晴男 (Hare-otoko). So I must be 雨男 (Ame otoko).
Naomi: ああ、そうなんだ。皆さんは何男ですか?何女ですか? (Ā,-sōna nda. Minasan wa nani otoko desu ka? Nani on'na desu ka?)
Peter: So which are you? Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.
VOCAB LIST
Naomi: 雨 (ame)
Peter: Rain.
Naomi: (slow)あめ (Ame) (natural speed) 雨 (ame)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 降る (furu)
Peter: To fall as in rain, snow, to precipitate.
Naomi: (slow)ふる (Furu) (natural speed) 降る (Furu)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 晴れる (hareru)
Peter: To clear up, to be sunny.
Naomi: (slow)はれる (Hareru) (natural speed) 晴れる (hareru)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 思う (Omou)
Peter: To think, to feel.
Naomi: (slow)おもう (Omō) (natural speed) 思う (Omou)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 頼りない (tayorinai)
Peter: Weak, unreliable, undependable.
Naomi: (slow)たよりない (Tayorinai) (natural speed) 頼りない (tayorinai)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: The first word is 雨 (Ame)
Peter: Rain. Here is something that’s a little tricky. 雨 (Ame) is a noun. So if you want to say it rains or it will rain, you say
Naomi: 雨が降る。 (Amegafuru.)
Peter: 降る (Furu) means to precipitate, to fall. So 雨が降る (Amegafuru) literally means rain precipitates or rain falls but this is equivalent to to rain in English.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) That’s right. 雪 (Yuki) is snow. So to snow is 雪が降る。(Yukigafuru.)
Peter: It snows or it will snow. Let’s introduce another weather related verb.
Naomi: 晴れる (Hareru)
Peter: To be cleared up, to be sunny. Can we have a sample sentence?
Naomi: 朝、雨が降りますが、午後から晴れます。 (Asa, amegafurimasu ga, gogo kara haremasu.)
Peter: It will rain in the morning but it will be sunny in the afternoon. Now Naomi Sensei, before I said there was something tricky. So when you talk about rain, there is 雨が降る (Amegafuru) but usually people just say 雨です。 (Amedesu.)
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.)
Peter: Or in informal situations, 雨だ。 (Ameda.)
Naomi: State of being raining. すごい雨。すごい雪、とかね。 (Sugoi ame. Sugoi yuki, toka ne.)
Peter: Yes and this is one that’s really kind of tough to translate into English.
Naomi: そう、私もね (Sō, watashi mo ne) When I studied English, the usage of rain was so difficult.
Peter: And that’s because of the way Japanese is structured. 雨が降る (Amegafuru) to rain that means – that whole thing means to rain.
Naomi: I remember that I kept saying rain is falling or snow is falling.
Peter: Yeah when you wanted to say it’s raining.
Naomi: そうそうそう。 (Sō sō sō.) It’s snowing. で、(De,) Speaking of rain, it’s 雨 (Ame) not 飴 (Ame)
Peter: So you start out high and you go low.
Naomi: そう。あめ。 (Sō. Ame.)
Peter: あめ。 (Ame.)
Naomi: Right.
Peter: The other way
Naomi: 飴 (Ame)
Peter: Is a candy.
Naomi: Right.
Peter: 雨。飴。 (Ame. Ame.)
Naomi: Perfect.
Peter: All right. I am finally getting the hang of this pitch accent.
Naomi: 良かったです。 (Yokattadesu.)
Peter: On to the grammar point for this lesson.

Lesson focus

Peter: The focus of this lesson is talking about what one thinks will happen using informal speech plus
Naomi: と思う (To omou)
Peter: Now と (To) is a quotation marker which is used at the end of a quoted sentence. 思う (Omou) means to think and it’s classified as a class 1 verb. So when you have the quotation marker と (To) plus
Naomi: 思う (Omou)
Peter: It means to think. What the subject thinks.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) I think that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Peter: Can we have an example?
Naomi: ママは晴れると思う。 (Mama wa hareru to omou.)
Peter: Mom thinks it will be sunny. Let’s break it down.
Naomi: ママは (Mama wa)
Peter: Mom plus the topic marking particle.
Naomi: 晴れる (Hareru)
Peter: To be clear, to be sunny.
Naomi: と (To)
Peter: Quotation particle.
Naomi: 思う (Omou)
Peter: To think. So mama thinks it will be sunny. Now in this sentence, Kiri is referring to herself as
Naomi: Mama.
Peter: So it means I think it will be sunny when we translate it into English.
Naomi: 私は (Watashi wa) such and such と思う (To omou) is I think that such and such.
Peter: Now please note that the part that comes before と (To) the quotation marker, that should be in informal Japanese. For example, the previous sentence ママは晴れますと思う (Mama wa haremasu to omou) is incorrect.
Naomi: うーん。だめですね。 (U ̄n. Damedesu ne.) You can’t use ます (Masu) or です (Desu) ending sentence before a quotation.
Peter: Informal plus と (To), informal plus と (To). Definitely remember that one. Let’s illustrate with an example. How do you say it will rain in informal speech?
Naomi: 雨が降る (Amegafuru)
Peter: How do you say I think it will rain?
Naomi: 私は雨が降ると思う。 (Watashi wa amegafuru to omou.)
Peter: Now if you want to say this politely, of course it would be
Naomi: 私は雨が降ると思います。 (Watashi wa amegafuru to omoimasu.)
Peter: Remember the last verb of the sentence dictates the politeness level.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.)
Peter: So even if you are in a really super formal situation, remember it’s the last verb. Don’t be tempted to change the verb that comes before と (To) to make it polite. Remember the last verb makes it polite. Okay let’s go back to this lesson story. お父さんは結婚式に行くでしょうか。 (Otōsan wa kekkonshiki ni ikudeshou ka.)
Naomi: どうだろうな。行くと思いますよ。 (Dōdarou na. Iku to omoimasu yo.) I think he will go to the wedding. それから明日は晴れると思います。 (Sorekara ashitahahareru to omoimasu.) Happy ending だと思います。 (Da to omoimasu.)
Peter: So you think he is going to go and you think it’s going to be
Naomi: Sunny.
Peter: And you also think it will be?
Naomi: Happy ending どう思います? (Dō omoimasu?) You don’t like happy ending.
Peter: 明日ですね。お父さんは行かないと思います。それから雨が降ると思います。それからハッピーエンディングではないと思います。 (Ashitadesu ne. Otōsan wa ikanai to omoimasu. Sorekara amegafuru to omoimasu. Sorekara happīendingude wa nai to omoimasu.)

Outro

Naomi: 皆さんはどう思いますか。それじゃあ、また。 (Minasan wa dō omoimasu ka. Sore jā, mata.)
