Naomi: 直美です。 (Naomidesu.)
Peter: Peter here. Japanese You Can Do Without. Naomi Sensei, this is the final lesson of this series.
Naomi: ねぇ。最後。 (Ne~e. Saigo.) The final.
Peter: So we will find out what happens to our hero, Haruya.
Naomi: I hope he can make a good impression this time.
Peter: Now in the previous lesson, Miyu’s mother Kiri has been hospitalized. She got out of the hospital and Haruya is here again to see the parents.
Naomi: The focus of this lesson is the sentence structure. なになにないで、なになにする。 (Nani naninaide, nani nani suru)
Peter: Do something without doing something. This conversation takes place at?
Naomi: 天道さんのうちのリビングルーム。 (Tendō-san no uchi no ribingurūmu.)
Peter: The Living room of the Tendo’s place. The conversation is between
Naomi: 晴夜、きり、それから雷三。 (Haruya, kiri, sorekara raizō.)
Peter: Okay Naomi Sensei, are you ready for today’s lesson?
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)

天道 きり (Tendō kiri): はい、コーヒー。どうぞ。 (Hai, kōhī. Dōzo.) 晴夜さんはいつもコーヒーにお砂糖とミルクを入れて飲みますか。 (Haruya-san wa itsumo kōhī ni o-satō to miruku o irete nomimasu ka.)

Do you take milk and sugar with your coffee?
大空 晴夜 (Ōzora Haruya): いえ。入れないで飲みます。いただきます。アチッ。 (Ie. Irenaide nomimasu. Itadakimasu. Achi.)
OOZORA HARUYA:No, I take my coffee black. Thank you. Ouch, it’s hot!
...あ、あのぉ...お父さんは...。 (A, anō... o-tōsan wa....)
...Um, er, is Mr. Tendo...?
天道 きり (Tendō kiri): 二階にいます。さっきから、何も言わないで、美雨のアルバムを見ているわ。 (Nikai ni imasu. Sakki kara, nani mo iwanaide, Miu no arubamu o mite iru wa.)
TENDO KIRI: He’s upstairs. He’s been up there looking at Miu’s photo album this whole time without saying a single word.
あ、晴夜さんは、ご飯を食べてきましたか。 (A, Haruya-san wa, gohan o tabete kimashita ka.)
Oh, Haruya-san, did you eat before you came?
大空 晴夜 (Ōzora Haruya): あ、いえ。食べないで来ました。(グウー) (A, ie. Tabenaide kimashita.(gū))
HARUYA OZORA: No, I haven’t eaten (stomach rumbles).
(ガラガラ) ((Garagara))
(door opens)
大空 晴夜 (Ōzora Haruya): あ、お父さん。美雨さんとの結婚を許してくださ.... (A, o-tōsan. Miu-san to no kekkon o yurushite kuda....)
OOZORA HARUYA:Oh, Mr. Tendo. Please allow me to marry...
天道 雷三: うるさい。もたもたしていないで、上着を着て。 (Urusai. Motamota shite inai de, uwagi o kite.) 美雨はどこだ? (Miu wa doko da?)
TENDO RAIZOU: Enough! Quit dilly-dallying and put on your coat. Where’s Miu?
みんなですし屋にいくぞ。今日は、母さんの退院祝いだ。 (Min'na de sushi-ya ni iku zo. Kyō wa, kā-san no taiin iwai da.)
We’re going to eat sushi. We’re celebrating mom getting out of the hospital.
大空 晴夜 (Ōzora Haruya): はい! (Hai!)

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: よかったですね。雷三が、みんなで寿司屋に行くぞ! (Yokattadesu ne. Raizō ga, min'nade sushi-ya ni iku zo!)
Peter: Come on everyone, we are going for Sushi.
Naomi: So he finally spoke to Haruya.
Peter: I think in his own way, he 晴夜のことを認めた。 (Haruya no koto o mitometa.) He kind of recognized Haruya. So he was not nice to him but being mean to him is kind of recognizing him in his own way. Okay let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. Naomi Sensei, the first word is
Naomi: もたもた (Motamota)
Peter: Inefficient, slow.
Naomi: もたもた走る (Motamota hashiru)
Peter: Run slowly.
Naomi: ゆっくり (Yukkuri) is also slowly right but もたもた走る (Motamota hashiru) sounds like the speaker is a bit irritated.
Peter: Yeah. Japanese has a lot of onomatopoeia, words that represent sounds or emotions or feelings which is a very unique part of Japanese and next season, we are actually going to have a course on this, just on onomatopoeia.
Naomi: Interesting.
Peter: For me, what’s interesting about this is もたもた (Motamota). It kind of sounds like motor which in English is fast. So this one doesn’t sound slow to my ears もたもた (Motamota). So Naomi Sensei, can I say もたもたしないでください。 (Motamota shinaide kudasai.)
Naomi: もたもたしないでください。もたもたしないで。なんか (Motamota shinaide kudasai. Motamota shinaide. Nanka) sounds really offensive but…
Peter: So it’s a pretty strong like come on, hurry up already いいね (Ī ne). Okay what’s the next word we have?
Naomi: 寿司屋 (Sushi-ya)
Peter: Now this can be a sushi place or a sushi owner.
Naomi: そうですね。屋 (Sōdesu ne. -Ya) means person or family who does their business.
Peter: So kind of like a merchant.
Naomi: Right.
Peter: Do we have some other examples where person doing business kind of we attach this 屋 (Ya)
Naomi: 花屋 (Hanaya)
Peter: Florist.
Naomi: 床屋 (Tokoya)
Peter: Barber. Now in today’s dialogue, what did Lizo say?
Naomi: 寿司屋に行くぞ (Sushi-ya ni iku zo)
Peter: Let’s go to the Sushi place. The sentence ending particle ぞ (Zo). What does this mean?
Naomi: Emphasis only used my male speakers.
Peter: Most of the time.
Naomi: ああ、そうね。 (Ā, sōne.) You are right. Most of the time.
Peter: Or at least it was designed that way but I think women these days definitely will use this one.
Naomi: そうかなぁ。 (Sō ka nā.)
Peter: Not all the time but like every once in a while.
Naomi: ああ、そうね。 (Ā, sōne.)
Peter: And what about in songs?
Naomi: え、どういう風に? (E, dōyūfūni?)
Peter: I don’t know. It seems like I have seen ぞ (Zo) quite a few times.
Naomi: ああ、そうかもね。 (Ā,-sō kamo ne.)
Peter: So not unheard of but it’s definitely used by males more.
Naomi: ぞ (Zo) is kind of rough expression. So you can’t use ぞ (Zo) with ます (Masu) or です (Desu).
Peter: And this phrase especially 行くぞ (Ikuzo) I have also used quite a bit.
Naomi: ああ、そうね。 (Ā, sōne.) If you are doing sports, you will hear this expression a lot.
Peter: Let’s go.
Naomi: そうそうそう。行くぞ! (Sō sō sō. Iku zo!)
Peter: 行くぞ! (Ikuzo!)
Naomi: じゃあ、グラマーに行くぞ。 (Jā, guramā ni iku zo.)
Peter: That’s a really good usage. I strongly doubt you will hear your professor or Japanese teacher say this one. グラマーに行くぞ。いいね。(Guramā ni iku zo. Ī ne.)

Lesson focus

Peter: In this lesson, we are focusing on ないで (Nai de) something, something する (Suru). For example.
Naomi: 食べないで寝る。(Tabenai de neru.)
Peter: To go to sleep without eating. This ないで (Nai de) is without the previous action. Let’s have another example.
Naomi: 勉強しないでテストを受ける。 (Benkyō shinaide tesuto o ukeru.)
Peter: To take the test without studying. Notice how we start from the second, the main clause to take the test.
Naomi: テストを受ける。 (Tesuto o ukeru.)
Peter: To take the test. Then, without that previous action, ないで (Nai de) in the sentence, it was
Naomi: 勉強しないで、テストを受ける。 (Benkyō shinaide, tesuto o ukeru.)
Peter: Without studying, take the test. So in order to do this, we need the ない (Nai) form of the verb plus で (De) and in the previous lessons, we went over how to form the ない (Nai) form which is simply add で (De) and then follow it with another clause. So previously we gave you the Japanese example. We will give you the English sentence and try to work backwards and get the Japanese sentence. Well, Naomi Sensei, how would I say Peter works without sleeping?
Naomi: ピーターは寝ないで働く。 (Pītā wa nenaide hataraku.)
Peter: The first part of that sentence is
Naomi: ピーターは (Pītā wa)
Peter: Peter marked by the topic marking particle followed by
Naomi: 寝ないで (Nenaide)
Peter: No sleep followed by
Naomi: 働く (Hataraku)
Peter: Works. Peter no sleep works. Peter works without sleep. It’s kind of like Peter no sleep and works. So the で (De) is combining the sentences.
Naomi: Yeah it’s like and.
Peter: Peter, no sleep and works. So Peter works without sleeping.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) You really do right.
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: In today’s dialogue, we had お父さんは何も言わないで、アルバムを見ている。 (Otōsan wa nani mo iwanaide, arubamu o mite iru.)
Peter: The father has been looking at the photo album without saying anything. Literally the father saying nothing and looking at the album. So he is looking at the album without saying anything.
Naomi: ね。可哀想。 (Ne. Kawaisō.) I feel a bit sorry for him.
Peter: え、なんでですか? (E, nandedesu ka?) Why?
Naomi: なんか、寂しいんじゃない? (Nanka, sabishī n janai?)
Peter: You think he is sad.
Naomi: うん。 (Un.)
Peter: 違うと思いますけど。 (Chigau to omoimasukedo.) I think it’s something different.
Naomi: What is it?
Peter: I think he inside 認めてる (Mitome teru) like he admitted 認める (Shitatameru) is to admit, to recognize. He recognized that his daughter is going to be with Haruya. So he is just thinking about all the times together.
Naomi: ああ~なるほどね。 (Ā ~ naruhodo ne.)
Peter: かな? (Ka na?) Naomi Sensei, so it’s a happy ending.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) I think so.
Peter: And you know what I kind of, like in this story?
Naomi: なんで? (Nande?)
Peter: Because it’s not so clear. You know, you kind of have to deduce that the father is coming to terms with the fact that his daughter is going to marry Haruya and he doesn’t come openly out and say like, welcome to the family but the phrase
Naomi: みんなで寿司屋に行くぞ。みんなで (Min'na de sushi-ya ni iku zo. Min'nade) is the key right? Like with everyone.
Peter: He is included now.
Naomi: Yeah.
Peter: So I think I don’t know. I like this story.
Naomi: あ、本当?良かったです。 (A, hontō? Yokattadesu.)
Peter: It wasn’t like that ガシッ (Gashi~tsu) welcome to the family like any way, you can come too.
Naomi: If you want
Peter: Kind of like the phrase 嫌いではないです。 (Kiraide wanaidesu.)
Naomi: Ah yeah, yeah, yeah he said that right?
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: He said that in the previous lesson.
Peter: You know, I think the father deep down is really like nice guy, very sensitive but he just has a very tough like very thick layered skin. So he kind of hides how he really feels かな (Ka na).

Peter: Okay so that’s it. So Naomi Sensei, we will be back on next year with a new season.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) I hope so.
