Naomi: 直美です。 (Naomidesu.)
Peter: Peter here. Meet the Parents. Have You Seen Our Garden?
Naomi: Have You Seen Our Garden?
Peter: That is the title of today’s lesson. I think it will become apparent once we kind of delve into the lesson.
Naomi: 庭を見ましたか? (Niwa o mimashita ka?)
Peter: Have you seen the garden? So welcome back to JapanesePod101.com. Now Naomi Sensei, what happened in the previous lesson?
Naomi: 晴夜は美雨のうちにいます。 (Seiya wa Miu no uchi ni imasu.) Haruya is in Miyu’s house.
Peter: He is visiting his girlfriend’s parent’s home again. Now in today’s lesson
Naomi: お父さんが帰ります。 (Otōsan ga kaerimasu.)
Peter: Dad’s coming home again.
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Peter: And if you remember from the last lesson, he invited in the eligible bachelor he would like his daughter to see.
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Peter: So the focus of this lesson is
Naomi: てください (Te kudasai) again but this time the construction with class III verbs.
Peter: The conversation takes place at?
Naomi: 天道さんのうち, (Tendō-san no uchi,) the Family Tendo’s place.
Peter: The conversation is between Haruya and his girlfriend’s father.
Naomi: 雷三と晴夜です。 (Raizō to seiyadesu.)
Peter: The boyfriend and the father. So they are speaking formal Japanese.
Naomi: そうです。 (Sōdesu.)
Peter: All right, let’s have a listen to today’s lesson.
DIALOGUE
天道 雷三: ただいまぁー。 (Tadaimā.)
大空 晴夜 (Ōzora seiya): おと...、おと...、おと...、おとおとおと、お父~さん。僕達の結婚を許してください。 (Oto..., oto..., oto..., oto oto oto, Otō-san. Boku-tachi no kekkon o yurushite kudasai.)
天道 雷三: 何だ、君は? (Nan da, kimi wa?)

TENDO RAIZOU: What are you doing here?

YAMAKAWA YUKIO (FROM AFAR): Mr. Tendo, Mr. Tendo—
天道 雷三: 雪男君、ちょ、ちょっと待ってくださ~い。 (Yukio-kun,Cho, chotto matte kudasāi.)
TENDO RAIZOU (TO YUKIO): Yukio-kun, w-wait a moment please.
天道 雷三: 君ィ、困るよ。 (Kimi, komaru yo.)
(to Haruya) You’re making me look bad.
はい、これ、君。この靴を持って。ちょっとこっちに来て。早く、こっち来て。 (Hai, kore, kimi. Kono kutsu o motte. Chotto kocchi ni kite. Hayaku, kocchi kite.)
Here, take these shoes. Come over here. Come here quickly.

Here’s your jacket. Put this on. Go out onto the veranda.

Goodbye. Go home. Go. (shuts the window and locks it after Haruya)
大空 晴夜 (Ōzora seiya): (ドンドンドン)お父さ~ん。おとうさ~ん。開けてください。何ですか?説明してくださ~い。 (O-tō-sān. O-tō-sān. Akete kudasai. Nan desu ka? Setsumei shite kudasāi.)
OOZORA HARUYA: (knocking) Mr. Tendo, Mr. Tendo! Please, open this door. Please tell me what’s going on!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: 晴夜さんはだめですね。 (Seiya-san wa damedesu ne.)
Naomi: え?だめ?本当? (E? Dame? Hontō?) What do you mean?
Peter: だめな男ですね。 (Damena otokodesu ne.) Like I don’t think he is really worthwhile guy.
Naomi: そうかなぁ。でも、まぁ雷三 (Sō ka nā. Demo, ma~a raizō) is saying はい、帰って、帰って。 (Hai, kaette, kaette.) So Haruya’s action probably upset Raizo.
Peter: Yeah again take to…So I don’t know. He’s had a couple of too many chances. I understand where that’s coming from.
Naomi: 可哀想、晴夜さん。 (Kawaisō, seiya-san.)
Peter: 可哀想。 (Kawaisō.) Great word. Poor Haruya but it’s kind of he brought up on himself but what I want to look at here is, he says さようなら。帰って。 (Sayōnara. Kaette.)
Naomi: 帰って (Kaette)
Peter: This is short for what expression?
Naomi: 帰ってください。 (Kaette kudasai.)
Peter: 帰って、帰って (Kaette, kaette) is short for the expression, please go home.
Naomi: 帰ってください。 (Kaette kudasai.)
Peter: And the return request from Haruya was
Naomi: 開けてください!説明してください! (Akete kudasai! Setsumei shite kudasai!)
Peter: "Please open up. Please explain!" But it’s fascinating here because they are going back and forth. So all really have, if you translate it directly into English, it is please return and who is being asked to return. It’s all taken from the context of the conversation 開けてください (Akete kudasai). In English, it translates to "please open" but we would need the object, please open the door, please open the window but in Japanese, it can all be inferred.
Naomi: そうですね。ドアを開けてください。窓かな? (Sōdesu ne. Doa o akete kudasai. Mado ka na?) in this case, he is in a balcony.
Peter: Naomi Sensei, I don’t even know. I only really care about the Japanese. From a linguistic perspective, it’s a very rich story.
Naomi: あ、そうですか。 (A,-sōdesu ka.)
Peter: It’s kind of like too much is going on like a Hollywood movie but that’s what’s very interesting about Japanese that the speaker can imply things based on the context.
Naomi: そうね。説明してください。 (Sō ne. Setsumei shite kudasai.) And here, again the object is omitted.
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: うん、面白い。 (Un, omoshiroi.)
Peter: Okay let’s have a look at some of the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Ok, Naomi-sensei, let's take a closer look at some of the words and expressions used in this conversation. What do we have first?
Naomi: 僕達 (bokutachi)
Peter: "We" or "us," depending on the context of the sentence.
Naomi: 達 (Tatsu) is a suffix right?
Peter: Which is attached to a personal pronoun or proper nouns and makes the preceding noun plural.
Naomi: 例えば、私 (Tatoeba, watashi)
Peter: "I" or "me."
Naomi: Becomes 私達。 (Watashitachi.)
Peter: "We" or "us."
Naomi: あなた (Anata)
Peter: "You."
Naomi: It’s singular, right? あなた達 (Anata-tachi)
Peter: "You" plural.
Naomi: 子供 (Kodomo)
Peter: "Child, kid."
Naomi: 子供達 (Kodomodachi)
Peter: "Children."
Naomi: あの人 (Ano hito)
Peter: "That person."
Naomi: あの人たち (Ano hito-tachi)
Peter: "Those people."
Naomi: And you can even say 天道さん達。 (Tendō-san-tachi.)
Peter: "Mr. Tendo and others."
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Peter: Next we have
Naomi: 説明 (Setsumei)
Peter: Explanation.
Naomi: When you put する (Suru) or をする (o suru), it becomes a verb to explain 説明する。 (Setsumei suru.)
Peter: And する (Suru) is one of the class 3 verbs we are going to look at today but this is a very common pattern. There is a noun and when you attach する (Suru) or をする (O suru), it becomes a verb.
Naomi: テニスをする (Tenisu o suru)
Peter: To play tennis and finally we have
Naomi: 君 (Kimi)
Peter: You. This is a very informal way to refer to someone. You have to be very careful when using this. We don’t really recommend it. In today’s conversation, Tendo san, he used this towards Haruya and he really doesn’t like Haruya but when you are older, you can refer to people younger than you as this and it will be okay but you can’t – you can never, never go the other way. So until you really kind of mastered the different levels and politeness levels in Japanese, we definitely don’t recommend you using it but if you watch Manga or you read comics, you probably come across this quite a bit.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) My male friend often uses this.
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: あんまり私は好きじゃないですけどね。 (Anmari watashi wa suki janaidesukedo ne.)
Peter: So it’s good to know but not good for use right now. That’s our kind of recommendation. Okay, on to today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Peter: Class III verbs, irregular verbs. Naomi Sensei, what are the two key class III verbs?
Naomi: する (Suru)
Peter: "To do"
Naomi: And 来る (Kuru)
Peter: "To come." Now we are going to go over the form of first to do. する (Suru) becomes
Naomi: して (Shite)
Peter: So you can see it is a complete change. Nothing remains from the original two Hiragana characters. する。 (Suru.) する (Suru) completely changes to
Naomi: して (Shite)
Peter: So what’s the verb to explain?
Naomi: 説明する (Setsumei suru)
Peter: This changes to?
Naomi: 説明して (Setsumei shite)
Peter: This is the te-form of a verb and today we look at the form of a verb plus
Naomi: ください (Kudasai)
Peter: So please explain it is
Naomi: 説明してください。 (Setsumei shite kudasai.)
Peter: Next we have
Naomi: 来る (Kuru) To come.
Peter: And the te-form is.
Naomi: 来て (Kite)
Peter: Again nothing similar to the first part. Now what is kind of interesting is both する (Suru) and 来る (Kuru) they change to the い (I) column. する (Suru) is して。 (Shite.) し (Shi) and 来る (Kuru) is 来て。 (Kite.) き (Ki). So if that helps you remember a little mnemonic, maybe that will help but probably you could just memorize them.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sōdesu ne.) Only two exceptions. So it’s not too bad.
Peter: Now, when will you use the te-form of 来る (Kuru). Do you have an example?
Naomi: 早く来てください。 (Hayaku kite kudasai.)
Peter: Please hurry up and come. Please come quickly. So again, this one is little tricky to use right now because you have to be in the location to use 来てください。 (Kite kudasai.) but later on, you will see how useful the te-form of 来る (Kuru) can become. Okay, so Naomi Sensei, how would you like to recap all of our te-form lessons?
Naomi: Probably how to make a cup of Ramen.
Peter: So basically relying on the first two. Yeah we are going to teach you how to make a cup of Ramen. Okay, today we are going to need the real way to make it. Naomi Sensei, お願いします。 (Onegaishimasu.)
Naomi: 蓋を開けてください。 (Futa o akete kudasai.) お湯を入れてください。 (Oyu o irete kudasai.) 蓋を閉めてください。 (Futa o shimete kudasai.) 三分待ってください。 (San-bu matte kudasai.) 蓋を開けてください。 (Futa o akete kudasai.) 混ぜてください。 (Mazete kudasai.) 混ぜる (Mazeru) is to mix. はい、食べてください。 (Hai, tabete kudasai.)
