INTRODUCTION
Naomi: なおみです。(Naomi desu.)
Yūichi: ゆういちです。(Yūichi desu.)
Peter: Peter here. The meet up part 3. Today we have a very special treat, Naomi-sensei.
Naomi: そう。ただ~ん。(Sō. Tadān.)
Peter: The return of the alpha male. Now it’s not Kazunori, the original alpha male but what we have in the studio is alpha male 2.
Naomi: え、そんな名前ですか。(E, sonna namae desu ka.)
Peter: そうですよ。(Sō desu yo.) Naomi-sensei, without further adieu, please introduce alpha male 2.
Naomi: ゆういちさんです。(Yūichi-san desu.)
Yūichi: どうも、こんにちは。(Dōmo, kon’nichiwa.)
Peter: 自己紹介、お願いします。(Jiko shōkai, onegai shimasu.)
Yūichi: えー、ゆういちです。えーと、Japanese101で働いてまだ一ヶ月ちょっとですが、今日スタジオで録音することになりました。ピーターさんのおかげで、ここで楽しくやりたいと思います。よろしくお願いします。(Ē, Yūichi desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: あの、ちょっとね。日本語まだちょっと難しいです、って感じですけれども。(Ano, chotto ne. Nihon-go mada chotto muzukashii desu, tte kanji desu keredo mo.) He is not quite fluent in Japanese yet but... よろしくお願いします。(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Naomi wow!
Naomi: うそうそうそうそうそ。冗談。あの、新しい先生です。ゆういち先生ですね。(Uso uso uso uso uso. Jōdan. Ano, atarashii sensei desu. Yūichi-sensei desu ne.)
Peter: And for the ladies out there, I think we have quite a catch. What do you have about...何センチですか (nan-senchi desu ka), like 175, 176?
Yūichi: 178 cm.
Peter: About 6’2.
Naomi: すごいね。(Sugoi ne.)
Peter: Tall, good looking.
Naomi: Young.
Peter: Young. Well, that’s how you get to be the alpha male 2. So the return of the alpha male. It should be the name of this lesson. Okay, on to today’s lesson. So Naomi-sensei, tell us about today’s lesson.
Naomi: In the previous lesson... 彼氏のことをクミさんは30分以上待ってましたね。(Kareshi no koto o Kumi-san wa san-juppun ijō matte mashita ne.)
Peter: So in the previous lesson Kumi was waiting for her boyfriend for over 30 minutes. It’s a good thing Yūichi doesn’t show up.
Naomi: あ~、そうですね。(Ā, sō desu ne.) And a security guard talked to her.
Peter: So in this conversation, we have a continuation.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Now are they still using polite Japanese?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: So without further adieu, let’s have a listen to today’s lesson. Here we go.

SECURITY GUARD: When I was younger, I used to only think about work everyday. Work was very fun. All my wife did was take care of the kids.
警備員 (keibiin) : 妻が死んで、子供が家を出て。今は私だけになりました。寂しいですね。本当は、家族だけが大切だったんですが。(Tsuma ga shinde, kodomo ga ie o dete. Ima wa watashi dake ni narimashita. Samishii desu ne. Hontō wa, kazoku dake ga taisetsu datta n desu ga.)
SECURITY GUARD: Then my wife died, and my kids left home. Now, it's just me. It's sad. The truth is, my family was the only important thing.
タロウ (Tarō) : お父さん!(O-tō-san!)
TARŌ: Dad!
警備員 (keibiin) : タロウ! (Tarō!)
SECURITY GUARD: Tarō!
クミ (Kumi) : ええ?タロウのお父さん???(Ee? Tarō no o-tō-san???)
KUMI: What? You're Tarō's dad???
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yūichi: 妻はmy wifeという意味ですが、他にも色々ありますよね、なおみさん。(Tsuma wa “my wife” to iu imi desu ga, hoka ni mo iroiro arimasu yo ne, Naomi-san.)
Naomi: ありますね。嫁とか、家内とか、かみさんとか。(Arimasu ne. Yome toka, kanai toka, kamisan toka.) There is several ways means my wife.
Peter: So Naomi-sensei, all these words are a way to refer to your wife.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) Your own wife. ピーターさんは奥さんのことを何て呼びますか。 (Pītā-san wa okusan no koto o nan te yobimasu ka.)
Peter: Wifey.
Naomi: は?(Ha?) No, no, no if you are talking to... wifey? 本当に?(Hontō ni?)
Peter: 本当ですよ。(Hontō desu yo.) Wifey. おいで。(Oide.)
Naomi: Okay. じゃあ、私の質問が悪かった。日本語で話してる時に、ピーターさんが奥さんのことを他の人に話すときに、何を使いますか。(Jā, watashi no shitsumon ga warukatta. Nihon-go de hanashite ru toki ni, Pītā-san ga okusan no koto o hoka no hito ni hanasu toki ni, nani o tsukaimsu ka.) Which word do you use to refer to your wife?
Peter: ゆういちくん。今なおみ先生が話した日本語はいかがでしたか。結構良かったですね。(Yūichi-kun. Ima Naomi-sensei ga hanashita Nihon-go wa ikaga deshita ka. Kekkō yokatta desu ne.)
Yūichi: そうですね。まあ、僕…えっと...。(Sō desu ne. Mā, boku… etto…)
Naomi: あ、ゆういちさん。(A, Yūichi-san.) You can ignore Peter.
Peter: Yes, your Japanese sometimes is really good.
Yūichi: まあまあでしたね。(Mā mā deshita ne.)
Naomi: ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
Peter: 他の人と話すときに、wife を言う時に、奥さんって言います。(Hoka no hito to hanasu toki ni, “wife” o iu toki ni, okusan tte iimasu.)
Naomi: ふーん、なるほどね。ゆういちさんは結婚してないですけど。(Fūn, naruhodo ne. Yūichi-san wa kekkon shite nai desu kedo.) What would you like to call your wife when you refer to your wife to other person?
Yūichi: あ~、…うちのかみさん?(Ā, ...uchi no kamisan?)
Naomi: なるほどね。(Naruhodo ne.)
Peter: God of the house. See that’s what an alpha male does.
Naomi: あの、かみさん (ano, kamisan) has two meanings. The word かみさん (kamisan) is from the word 神 (kami) which means god. So かみさん (kamisan) is like god.
Peter: Or goddess.
Naomi: Goddess. はい、そうですね。(Hai, sō desu ne.)
Peter: In Yūichi’s case.
Yūichi: Yeah and not only referring to the god, but also it used to refer to higher officials.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) In Edo era, people call their government as おかみ (o-kami).
Peter: So Yūichi knows his place in the house.
Naomi: あ~、そうですね。(Ā, sō desu ne.) Who has the control… みたいなね (mitai na ne).
Peter: なおみ先生、もしなおみ先生が結婚したら。(Naomi-sensei, moshi Naomi-sensei ga kekkon shitara.) If you get married. なおみ先生の旦那さんが他の人と話すときにどの言葉で呼ばれたいですか。(Naomi-sensei no danna-san ga hoka no hito to hanasu toki ni dono kotoba de yobaretai desu ka.)
Naomi: うーん、奥さん。あ、でもかみさんも悪くないですね。(Ūn, okusan. A, demo kamisan mo warukunai desu ne.)
Peter: でしょ?(Desho?)
Naomi: To be honest, I don’t really care but there is only one word which I don’t want to be called, that is 家内 (kanai).
Peter: Why?
Naomi: Because the kanji 家内 (kanai) is inside the house. I want to work outside. So…
Peter: Ah, I see but 奥さん (okusan) is the woman inside the box.
Naomi: まあ、そうですね。 (Mā, sō desu ne.) Any ways.
Peter: And just one more time again this is referring to your own wife. Do not refer to someone else’s wife with any of these words. So I wouldn’t say ゆういちさん、かみさん元気ですか (Yūichi-san, kamisan genki desu ka).
Yūichi: うん、ちょっとそれだとおかしいですね。(Un, chotto sore da to okashii desu ne.)
Peter: Yeah, that’s a bit strange. So remember these words are for when you are talking about your wife with someone else.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: Okay, on to vocab. First word.
Naomi: 多分 (tabun)
Peter: Perhaps, probably.
Naomi: (slow) たぶん (tabun) (natural speed) 多分 (tabun)
Peter: Next.
Yūichi: 昔 (mukashi)
Peter: In the old days, a long time ago. Former.
Yūichi: (slow) むかし (mukashi) (natural speed) 昔 (mukashi)
Peter: 次の言葉お願いします。(Tsugi no kotoba onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: 妻 (tsuma)
Peter: Wife.
Naomi: (slow) つま (tsuma) (natural speed) 妻 (tsuma)
Peter: Next.
Yūichi: 子供達 (kodomo-tachi)
Peter: Children.
Yūichi: (slow) こどもたち (kodomo-tachi) (natural speed) 子供達 (kodomo-tachi)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 世話 (sewa)
Peter: Look after, take care of.
Naomi: (slow) せわ (sewa) (natural speed) 世話 (sewa)
Peter: Next.
Yūichi: 寂しい (samishii)
Peter: Lonely.
Yūichi: (slow) さみしい (samishii) (natural speed) 寂しい (samishii)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 死ぬ (shinu)
Peter: To die.
Naomi: (slow) しぬ (shinu) (natural speed) 死ぬ (shinu)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, let’s take a closer look at some of the words in today’s lesson. なおみ先生、お願いします。 (Naomi-sensei, onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) The first word we take a look at is 昔 (mukashi).
Peter: In the old days, former.
Naomi: If you take a close look at this kanji, you can see 十 (jū), 十 (jū) and 一 (ichi) and 日 (nichi). Can you see them?
Peter: So you can see 10, 10, and 1 and day, 21 days.
Naomi: 21 days ago is 昔 (mukashi).
Peter: えー、そうですか?(Ē, sō desu ka?)
Naomi: え、だって見えない? (E, datte mienai?) You can’t see it?
Peter: So you can think of it the opposite. 21 days is not that long but it’s the opposite of that.
Naomi: そうですね、まあ。(Sō desu ne, mā.) Different person has different perception. So some fairy tale starts with むかしむかし (mukashi mukashi).
Peter: And the fairy tale in Japanese is むかしばなし (mukashibanashi).
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: So this character with to speak. So, a long time ago speak.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: Fairy tale. Okay, next we have
Yūichi: 子供達 (kodomo-tachi)
Peter: Children, kids. This is the plural of children which is
Yūichi: 子供 (kodomo)
Peter: Then we have the suffix which indicates pleural.
Yūichi: 達 (tachi)
Peter: So together we have
Yūichi: 子供達 (kodomo-tachi)
Peter: Children and
Naomi: 例えば、あの人 (tatoeba, ano hito) means that person. あの人達 (ano hito-tachi) means
Peter: Those people.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) 妻 (tsuma) is
Peter: Wife.
Naomi: 妻達 (tsuma-tachi)
Peter: Wives.
Naomi: そう。(Sō.) Yūichi-san, have you ever heard that movie called 極道の妻達 (Gokudō no tsuma-tachi)?
Yūichi: Yes, I have.
Peter: What’s that?
Naomi: It’s a story about wives in a gang family.
Peter: Interesting.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Yūichi: It’s an old movie, isn’t it?
Naomi: Yeah, for you probably. 昔の映画ですね。でも2~3年前にもありますよね。出ましたよね。(Mukashi no eiga desu ne. Demo ni-san-nen mae ni mo arimasu yo ne. Demashita yo ne.)
Yūichi: ああ、リメイク。(Ā, rimeiku.)
Naomi: あ、うん。そうそうそうそう。リメイクがたくさん出ています。(A, un. Sō sō sō sō. Rimeiku ga takusan dete imasu.)
Peter: Okay, next we have 世話 (sewa), to take care of. Now there is an expression お世話になってます (o-sewa ni natte masu) and you kind of use this as a telephone greeting or when you talk to someone you do business with or you talk to someone that’s going to do some work for you, then you can often use this greeting to express that the relationship is going to be a very prosperous one from here on out.
Naomi: あの~。(Anō.) The grammar of お世話になっています (o-sewa ni natte imasu) is pretty difficult. So I recommend you to memorize お世話になっています (o-sewa ni natte imasu) as a phrase.
Peter: Yeah, so sometimes on the phone, it’s はい、ピーターと申します。いつもお世話になっています。(Hai, Pītā to mōshimasu. Itsumo o-sewa ni natte imasu.) Like Peter here, thanks for all your help and now we are going to ask you something.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: Probably like a set up to your request or whatever you called about.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: And finally I just want to point out that 死ぬ (shinu) is one of the only verbs in Japanese that ends with ぬ (nu).
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: So can you think of another one?
Yūichi: 今は、そうですね。昔はたくさんあったんですけど。(Ima wa, sō desu ne. Mukashi wa takusan atta n desu kedo.)
Naomi: There used to be more verbs which ends with ぬ (nu) but right now, we have only one.
Peter: So the other ones are a bit archaic and this is the only one that’s kind of remaining in modern Japanese.
Naomi: そうですね。死ぬ。(Sō desu ne. Shinu.)
Peter: 積極的...。(Sekkyokuteki...) You said that very positively. On to the grammar point.

Lesson focus

Naomi: Today’s grammar point is だけ (dake).
Peter: Which is a particle that is equivalent to the English only or just. This comes after a noun and expresses the meaning of only or just. Only that noun, just that noun. For example, 君だけ (kimi dake) just you.
Naomi: 仕事のことだけ。(Shigoto no koto dake.)
Peter: Just work. Now this is different from the previous lesson where we had しかない (shika nai) but when we use しかない (shika nai) this implies some regret or dissatisfaction. That’s not the case with だけ (dake). So let’s just take a look at where it appeared in today’s conversation.
Yūichi: 毎日仕事のことだけ考えていました。(Mainichi shigoto no koto dake kangaete imashita.)
Peter: I was thinking only about my work every day. So again we have a subject implied by the speaker. So basically the subject doesn’t appear. The sentence starts out with
Naomi: 毎日 (mainichi)
Peter: Everyday.
Naomi: 仕事 (shigoto)
Peter: Work.
Naomi: の (no)
Peter: Possessive.
Naomi: こと (koto)
Peter: Thing. So, works thing and it’s just translated as work. Everyday work.
Naomi: だけ (dake)
Peter: Only.
Naomi: 考えていました (kangaete imashita)
Peter: Was thinking. So literally everyday works things, things about work, only thinking, was thinking. So every day, I was only thinking about work. Now for a detailed explanation of everything we reviewed today, stop by japanesepod101.com and pick up the PDF. Inside we have a long detailed expression getting more into the details about the particles and how they work together with each other. For example the を (o) particle, the だけ (dake) particle. All these things are thoroughly explained inside the PDF. Okay Naomi-sensei, anything else?
Naomi: これだけですね。(Kore dake desu ne.)
Peter: That’s going to be it. Now I urge you to stop by and say hi to alpha male 2.
Naomi: ゆういちさんです。ゆ、う、い、ちですね。(Yūichi-san desu. Yu, u, i, chi desu ne.)
Peter: はい。なおみ先生、ゆういちさんって呼んでたけど、私はゆういちくんって呼んでた。なんか…大丈夫かな。(Hai. Naomi-sensei, Yūichi-san tte yonde ta kedo, watashi wa Yūichi-kun tte yonde ta. Nanka… daijōbu ka na.)
Naomi: Please ask Yūichi.
Peter: Yūichi? Is this okay?
Yūichi: Yeah.
Naomi: What do you want to be called, ゆうちゃん (Yū-chan)?
Peter: 可愛いね。ゆうちゃん!(Kawaii ne. Yū-chan!)
Naomi: ゆうくんとか?(Yū-kun toka?)
Yūichi: 大学の友達は色々言いますけど。ゆうくん、ゆういちくん、ゆういち、それくらいですね。ゆういちさんは友達からは呼ばれないですね。(Daigaku no tomodachi wa iroiro iimasu kedo. Yū-kun, Yūichi-kun, Yūichi, sore kurai desu ne. Yūichi-san wa tomodachi kara wa yobarenai desu ne.)
Peter: あ~、やっぱり友達呼ばないですね。 ゆういちくん、その気持ちわかるよ。やっぱりその仕事の壁、作らないとね。職場の壁かな? (Ā, yappari tomodachi yobanai desu ne. Yūichi-kun, sono kimochi wakaru yo. Yappari sono shigoto no kabe, tsukuranai to ne. Shokuba no kabe ka na?) Like works wall, 同僚の壁 (dōryō no kabe), which is correct?
Yūichi: 年齢の壁? (Nenrei no kabe?)
Naomi: あ、ひどい!(A, hidoi!)

Outro

Peter: Okay, I think that’s good. ここまでですね。(Koko made desu ne.)
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: See you next week, maybe.
