POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: なおみ先生、いかがでしたか。(Naomi-sensei, ikaga deshita ka.) How was it?
Naomi: 店員さんは難しいですよね。(Ten’in-san wa muzukashii desu yo ne.) I think to be a good shopping clerk, you need talent.
Peter: I definitely agree and sales, 営業 (eigyō) is one of the most important things for a business.
Naomi: そうですね。話さなければ売れない。でも、話しすぎると売れないですよね。(Sō desu ne. Hanasanakereba urenai. Demo, hanashisugiru to urenai desu yo ne.)
Peter: So if you can’t speak, you can’t sell but if you speak too much, you can’t sell.
Naomi: あと、タイミングも必要ですよね。(Ato, taimingu mo hitsuyō desu yo ne.)
Peter: And of course, timing is important. Yeah, a good salesman. Very, very valuable.
Naomi: We need one. Right? I would say the shopping clerk is a bit extreme but do you have any bad experience or good experience with shopping clerks in Japan?
Peter: In Japan, they are usually okay. I usually do all my shopping at ビックカメラ (Bikku kamera).
Naomi: あ~、そうなんですか。(Ā, sō nan desu ka.)
Peter: So I can’t even find a shopping clerk. I can’t even find somebody at the store. ビックカメラはいつも忙しいから、なかなか店員を見つからないですよ。(Bikku kamera wa itsumo isogashii kara, nakanaka ten’in o mitsukaranai desu yo.)
Naomi: あ~、そうですね。(Ā, sō desu ne.)
Peter: It’s quite an interesting problem to have, as well as the previous conversation, it is like wow! This seems like a really good store.
Naomi: Or opposite because it’s not so good. There aren’t enough customers to take care of. So…
Peter: Really? I thought the customers get extra special attention, 大事にされる (daiji ni sareru).
Naomi: So.
Peter: You would be taking care of…
Naomi: まあ、そうかもしれないですね。(Mā, sō kamo shirenai desu ne.)

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: This is a computer おたく (otaku) dream lesson.
Naomi: It’s for you, Peter-san.
Peter: Yeah, I like this a lot. Now let’s take a look at some of the words a little bit closer because there is actually so many we can go into. So let’s take a quick look at some of them. First we have
Naomi: ものすごく (monosugoku)
Peter: Enormously. Now as I mentioned before, this is an adverb. What is the adjective form?
Naomi: ものすごい (monosugoi)
Peter: Which means incredible.
Naomi: 例えば、あ~、ものすごいね。(Tatoeba, ā, monosugoi ne.)
Peter: Wow, that’s amazing!
Naomi: Pretty casual.
Peter: Really casual and of course, this is based off すごい (sugoi). So again now, it’s usually used in the adverbial form. い (i) becomes く (ku) and we have
Naomi: ものすごく (monosugoku)
Peter: Followed by an adjective and this together means extremely something. For example,
Naomi: さちこはものすごく速く話します。(Sachiko wa monosugoku hayaku hanashimasu.)
Peter: Sachiko speaks so fast, incredibly fast.
Naomi: 本当に速いですよ。日本語も、英語も。(Hontō ni hayai desu yo. Nihon-go mo, Eigo mo.)
Peter: Both Japanese and English. Now this sentence is kind of you may not have caught it that the ものすごく (monosugoku) is actually modifying the はやく (hayaku), ものすごくはやく (monosugoku hayaku). So extremely fast or extremely quickly, okay. Next we have.
Naomi: サービスする (sābisu suru)
Peter: To serve somebody with something free.
Naomi: Or sometimes サービスする (sābisu suru) means to serve something with free or with some discount.
Peter: Yeah, I was kind of – I remember the first time I heard it, I didn’t really get it はい、サービスです。(Hai, sābisu desu.) Yeah, this is a service. It’s what you do and then I didn’t get charged for that thing and then I kind of put two into together that oh, this means free.
Naomi: You might see a sign says ご飯サービス (gohan sābisu).
Peter: Which would mean Rice free. So if you buy something, Rice free.
Naomi: 少しサービスしてよ~。(Sukoshi sābisu shite yō.)
Peter: Give me something for free.
Naomi: Or get me some discount.
Peter: It’s kind of easy to imagine. It’s like service but you just don’t pay full price for it. My favorite word is サービス残業 (sābisu zangyō), service overtime.
Naomi: Unpaid overtime.
Peter: Because you are happy to provide it.
Naomi: え、ちょっと待って。(E, chotto matte.)
Peter: Happy to provide the service. Right, Naomi-sensei?
Naomi: You are forcing me to do サービス残業 (sābisu zangyō)?
Peter: いいですね。(Ii desu ne.) Okay next, next, next.
Naomi: なさる (nasaru)
Peter: Now in the previous Beginner Season 3 lesson, we covered both honorific and humble. Remember, humble is, think about it, kneeling down. It’s an action you do by yourself and you lower your status where honorific is you raise the person up and use it when usually when you speak about somebody else. So here we have an honorific. So used when speaking about somebody else’s action. Here we have the word that replaces to do which in regular Japanese is
Naomi: する (suru)
Peter: So any place you use する (suru) when you are speaking honorific Japanese, you replace that with
Naomi: なさる (nasaru)
Peter: For example,
Naomi: 結婚する (kekkon suru)
Peter: To get married.
Naomi: 結婚なさる (kekkon nasaru)
Peter: To get married honorific. I was able to remember this very, very easily because I went to Japanese school and I would always make it a point to be extra polite to my teachers, lift them up. You know, yes, I was that kid, all right. And my friends, I would speak to them in casual Japanese. So the best example I can give you is, I was in a room and not really far and this is where Japanese gets really fun like we were only within arm’s length of each other and I turned to my right where my friend was and I said 今日、何する? (Kyō, nani suru?) What will you do and then I turned to my Japanese teacher 日本語の先生 (Nihon-go no sensei) and said, 先生、今日、何をなさいますか。(Sensei, kyō, nani o nasaimasu ka.)
Naomi: すばらしい。(Subarashii.)
Peter: So that simple swapping out of the words increased the politeness level to such a degree that I lifted my teacher up and showed her how much I respect her.
Naomi: To get a good score.
Peter: そんなことないですよ。(Sonna koto nai desu yo.) But you see how here, that you can use different words to show different politeness levels. Okay, on to today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Peter: Naomi-sensei, what are we talking about today?
Naomi: たらどうですか (tara dō desu ka)
Peter: Which is a phrase of suggestion kind of translating to how about doing something or how about something. Now in today’s dialogue, what do we have?
Naomi: アップグレードなさったらどうでしょう。(Appugurēdo nasattara dō deshō.)
Peter: How about an upgrade?
Naomi: アップグレードなさった (appugurēdo nasatta)
Peter: なさった (nasatta) is again the honorific form of する (suru) and of course past した (shita). So simply if we can just – let’s just bring it down our politeness level to make it that much more easy to understand. So let’s just rephrase this in polite Japanese.
Naomi: アップグレードしたらどうでしょう。(Appugurēdo shitara dō deshō.)
Peter: How about an upgrade? Now we take the plain past of the verb, we attach ら (ra) and we follow with?
Naomi: どう (dō)
Peter: どう (dō) of course is how. How about something ,whatever that verb was.
Naomi: 食べたらどう? (Tabetara dō?)
Peter: How about eating?
Naomi: 飲んだらどう?(Nondara dō?)
Peter: How about drinking and of course, you see this pattern repeat itself over and over. Let’s take a look at what we had in the conversation.
Naomi: アップグレードなさったらどうでしょう。(Appugurēdo nasattara dō deshō.)
Peter: First word we have?
Naomi: アップグレード (appugurēdo)
Peter: Upgrade, followed by
Naomi: なさった (nasatta)
Peter: Again honorific form of to do. Upgrade do and this is a past. So upgrade did, followed by?
Naomi: ら (ra)
Peter: Making this conditional. So upgrade did if
Naomi: どう (dō)
Peter: How
Naomi: でしょう (deshō)
Peter: And here this is acting as a question. So literally we have upgrade did if how. Doesn’t really make a lot of sense but what we have to do here is kind of envision when you see the ら (ra), followed by the どう (dō). How about something? How about if you did something and that something is the verb that precedes ら (ra) and when you think about it and put it in the context that way, it makes perfect sense. What we are going to do here is give you kind of well, not that hypothetical. Give you a situation where Naomi sees my room and it’s not the cleanest. So Naomi is going to give, well, suggest politely that well, how about if you cleaned your room?
Naomi: 掃除をしたらどうですか。(Sōji o shitara dō desu ka.)
Peter: So Naomi comes walking in and she sees the room and as we are very close friends, she says
Naomi: 掃除したら?(Sōji shitara?)
Peter: And just saying that plain polite past plus ら (ra), the rest is inferred. How about if you cleaned? Now if you want to increase the politeness level, we can follow this phrase with
Naomi: どう (dō)
Peter: To get
Naomi: 掃除をしたらどう? (Sōji o shitara dō?)
Peter: How about cleaning and then we can go up and up and up. Let’s just go in order of politeness and next we have
Naomi: 掃除をしたらどうですか。(Sōji o shitara dō desu ka.)
Peter: Followed by
Naomi: 掃除をなさったらどうですか。(Sōji o nasattara dō desu ka.)
Peter: Here した (shita) is replaced with なさった (nasatta) the plain polite of なさる (nasaru) of course which is the honorific form of する (suru). Next.
Naomi: 掃除をなさったらどうでしょうか。(Sōji o nasattara dō deshō ka.)
Peter: Here ですか (desu ka) is replaced with でしょう (deshō) and finally we have.
Naomi: 掃除をなさったらいかがでしょう。(Sōji o nasattara ikaga deshō.)
Peter: Here どう (dō) is replaced by its polite form いかが (ikaga). So we go all the way up.

Outro

Peter: That’s going to do it for today.
Naomi: 是非、PDFをご覧になってください。(Zehi, pīdīefu o goran ni natte kudasai.)
