INTRODUCTION
Naomi: なおみです。(Naomi desu.)
Yūichi: ゆういちです。(Yūichi desu.)
Peter: Peter here. Time capsule part 3. Naomi-sensei. Today we get another piece of the puzzle. 今日も楽しみにしてます。(Kyō mo tanoshimi ni shite imasu.) I am, like really looking forward to this.
Naomi: 中に何が入っているんでしょうかね。(Naka ni nani ga haitte iru n deshō ka ne.)
Peter: And how are they going to get it, what’s going to happen? 楽しみ。(Tanoshimi.) Okay, now if you don’t remember Tamotsu, Hajime and Maki, last week they were excited about digging it up. They went to the park, they set out to find the location where they buried it. So today we are going to find out about that. Now today’s grammar point is
Naomi: てしまう (te shimau)
Peter: Which indicates a completion of an action and which also often has a negative nuance. Okay, the conversation takes place between the three friends and there is a new character introduced and we can’t give you who the new character is because that will give away the plot of this story or at least today’s part. So with that said, let’s have a listen. Polite and casual Japanese will be used today. Here we go.

TAMOTSU: Then I'll have a large size of Fries.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: なおみ先生、いかがでしたか。(Naomi-sensei, ikaga deshita ka.) How was it?
Naomi: これ何?あの、ゾウさん公園がなくなっちゃったんですか。(Kore nani? Ano, zō-san kōen ga nakunatchatta n desu ka.) It’s disappeared?
Yūichi: はい。マクドナルドになってしまっています。(Hai. Makudonarudo ni natte shimatte imasu.)
Peter: And it’s become a MacDonald’s.
Naomi: え、で、何?この人たちはマクドナルドでハンバーガーを食べているんですか。(E, de, nani? Kono hito-tachi wa Makudonarudo de hanbāgā o tabete iru n desu ka.)
Yūichi: まずは、食べます。(Mazu wa, tabemasu.)
Naomi: なるほどね。(Naruhodo ne.)
Peter: 魅力的ですね。(Miryokuteki desu ne.) This story is like fascinating. 穴がありますけど、おもしろい。(Ana ga arimasu kedo, omoshiroi.) There is like holes in this story but it’s interesting.
Naomi: でもね、すごい便利な言葉がたくさんあります。(Demo ne, sugoi benri na kotoba ga takusan arimasu.)
Yūichi: うん。実際にマクドナルドに行ったときに使ってみてください。(Un. Jissai ni Makudonarudo ni itta toki ni tsukatte mite kudasai.)
Naomi: The grammar point from last week.
Yūichi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: So please try to use these phrases when you go to McDonald's in Japan.
Naomi: あとこのね、最後のライン。(Ato kono ne, saigo no rain.) The very last line, Tamotsu said じゃあポテトのLで (jā poteto no eru de). この「で」、難しいですよね。(Kono “de”, muzukashii desu yo ne.) The function of this で (de) is very, very tricky.
Peter: But Naomi-sensei is going to help us with that right now. お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: Acceptable range を表しているんですよね (“Acceptable range” o arawashite iru n desu yo ne.)
Peter: Acceptable range. What does that mean?
Naomi: 例えば、水でいいです、って言うと...。(Tatoeba, mizu de ii desu, tte iu to…)
Peter: Water is okay.
Naomi: コーヒーでいいです。(Kōhī de ii desu.)
Peter: Coffee is okay.
Naomi: Like it’s saying such and such is okay, but it sounds like the person is being humble.
Peter: Really?
Yūichi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Naomi: Would you like tea or coffee? あ、コーヒーでいいです。(A, kōhī de ii desu.)
Peter: So coffee is okay. Coffee would be good, coffee would be nice and it’s perfectly polite and it’s perfectly okay to end the sentence with で (de). You don’t need to add the いいです (ii desu) and this is actually a structure that I use quite a bit and I think it’s quite common the way that Tamotsu ordered, is actually the way that I would order in a restaurant. で、で、で…。(De, de, de…)
Yūichi: あ、言いますね。(A, iimasu ne.)
Naomi: あ、ピーターよく言ってるね。(A, Pītā yoku itte ru ne.)
Yūichi: 言ってますね。(Itte masu ne.)
Peter: The last thing I always say is お願いします (onegai shimasu).
Yūichi: Very polite.
Naomi: これ、無料で。(Kore, muryō de.)
Peter: いいですね。(Ii desu ne.)
Naomi: Please make it free.
Yūichi: あと、ピーターさんはよくオススメを聞きますよね。(Ato, Pītā-san wa yoku osusume o kikimasu yo ne.)
Peter: はい、そうですね。(Hai, sō desu ne.) I always ask for the recommendation.
Naomi: でも絶対にそれを頼まないの。(Demo zettai ni sore o tanomanai no.) And you never listen to the waiter or waitress, yeah?
Peter: It depends on what they say. It’s like when I say オススメは何ですか (osusume wa nan desu ka), like what’s your recommendation, I really want them to guess what I want to eat. 本当に。(Hontō ni.)
Yūichi: It’s really hard.
Peter: 言ってるのは、私食べたいもの当ててみてください。(Itte ru no wa, watashi tabetai mono atete mite kudasai.)
Naomi: Guess what, do I want to eat.
Peter: その通りです。(Sono tōri desu.)
Naomi: ひどいね。だって、こないだなんて、オススメは何ですか、ってピーター先生が言って。(Hidoi ne. Datte, konaida nante, osusume wa nan desu ka, tte Pītā-sensei ga itte.)
Peter: So I asked what’s your recommendation.
Naomi: で、ウェイトレスさんが、パスタです。(De, weitoresu-san ga, pasuta desu.)
Peter: It’s pasta.
Naomi: で、ピーターさんが、じゃあ、カレーで。(De, Pītā-san ga, jā, karē de.) So it doesn’t make sense!
Peter: I’d like curry, please.
Naomi: ちょっとひどいよね。じゃあ、聞かなきゃいいのに。(Chotto hidoi yo ne. Jā, kikanakya ii noni.)
Yūichi: そうですよね。(Sō desu yo ne.)
Peter: そうですか。(Sō desu ka.)
Naomi: She went back to the kitchen and asked the chef and came back and said パスタです (pasuta desu) and you said カレーお願いします (karē onegai shimasu).
Peter: Yeah, but 当然です (tōzen desu). We are going to end them in one second. Just hang on one second and the reason is if she doesn’t know herself, then how can I trust her? ウェイトレスは自信がないと、信じてはいけません。(Weitoresu wa jishin ga nai to, shinjite wa ikemasen.) I can’t trust her. She should know.
Naomi: Pointless.
Peter: You come here, yeah.
Naomi: You do it every time. はい。単語いきましょう。(Hai. Tango ikimashō.)
Yūichi: じゃあ、ここらへんで。(Jā, kokora hen de.)
Peter: うまいですね。(Umai desu ne.) Yuichi is good. So he can use the で (de) like we are going to end right around here. Right around here is good, right? What would the whole phrase be?
Yūichi: じゃあ、ここらへんで終わりにしましょう。(Jā, kokora hen de owari ni shimashō.)
Peter: You can also stop at で (de) and have what comes after that basically implied. So what Yuichi-san said it’s still very polite and the phrase that came after can easily be implied that we are going to stop right around here but what he said was right around here. We are going to stop was implied. Well let’s take a look at the vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: Okay, first word.
Yūichi: マクドナルド (Makudonarudo)
Peter: MacDonald’s.
Yūichi: (slow) マクドナルド (Makudonarudo) (natural speed) マクドナルド (Makudonarudo)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: ちゃんと (chanto)
Peter: Perfectly, properly, exactly.
Naomi: (slow) ちゃんと (chanto) (natural speed) ちゃんと (chanto)
Peter: Next.
Yūichi: 腹ごしらえする (haragoshirae suru)
Peter: Have a meal, have a snack.
Yūichi: (slow) はらごしらえする (haragoshirae suru) (natural speed) 腹ごしらえする (haragoshirae suru)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 売り切れる (urikireru)
Peter: To be sold out.
Naomi: (slow) うりきれる (urikireru) (natural speed) 売り切れる (urikireru)
Peter: Next.
Yūichi: ポテト (poteto)
Peter: French fries, potato.
Yūichi: (slow) ポテト (poteto) (natural speed) ポテト (poteto)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, let’s have a look at some of the words and phrases used in this lesson.
Yūichi: 腹ごしらえする (haragoshirae suru)
Peter: Have a meal, have a snack.
Yūichi: So it’s kind of a set phrase. 腹 (hara) means stomach.
Naomi: おなかっていうことですよね。(Onaka tte iu koto desu yo ne.)
Yūichi: こしらえる (koshiraeru) is to make or to make up or get ready and arrange っていう意味ですね (tte iu imi desu ne). なので、腹ごしらえする (nanode, haragoshirae suru) literally means get your stomach ready. So which means just have a meal.
Peter: Really interesting. I can’t believe I’ve never heard this expression.
Naomi: あ、本当?(A, hontō?)
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: そう。出かける前に腹ごしらえをしよう。(Sō. Dekakeru mae ni haragoshirae o shiyō.)
Peter: Let’s have a snack before we leave or…
Naomi: そうですね。スナックよりももっとたくさん食べることです。(Sō desu ne. Sunakku yori mo motto takusan taberu koto desu.)
Peter: Let’s eat something before we leave.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Okay, and next we have
Naomi: 売り切れる (urikireru)
Peter: To be sold out.
Naomi: 売り切れます (urikiremasu) is a masu form. So 売り切れ (urikire) is the masu-stem. So this can be used as a noun.
Peter: For example.
Naomi: チーズバーガーは売り切れです。(Chīzubāgā wa urikire desu.)
Peter: Cheeseburgers are sold out.
Naomi: チーズバーガーは売り切れました、と同じ意味です。(Chīzubāgā wa urikiremashita, to onaji imi desu.)
Peter: We’ve sold out of cheeseburgers. Okay, let’s take a look at the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Peter: Today’s’ grammar point is
Naomi: てしまう (te shimau)
Peter: Which is the te-form of a verb plus しまう (shimau). A verb that means to finish. Now when しまう (shimau) is used as an auxiliary verb, it expresses or emphasizes the completion of an action and it often has a negative nuance. For example, what did we have in the conversation?
Yūichi: マクドナルドになってしまったよ。(Makudonarudo ni natte shimatta yo.)
Peter: So it’s been changed to McDonald's or it’s become MacDonald’s. The speaker used this because they thought the McDonald's was built over their time capsule. So it’s なってしまった (natte shimatta) instead of なった (natta). So without that negative nuance, it would be.
Naomi: マクドナルドになった。(Makudonarudo ni natta.)
Peter: Yeah. So if you were indifferent to the park, if you thought your time capsule wasn’t buried under the McDonald's and you came to the park and the MacDonald’s is there, you would probably say…
Naomi: あ、マクドナルドになった。(A, Makudonarudo ni natta.)
Peter: Oh it’s become MacDonald’s or it’s changed to MacDonald’s. Now your time capsule is buried under there. You can’t get it.
Yūichi: マクドナルドになってしまった。(Makudonarudo ni natte shimatta.)
Naomi: The speakers aren’t very happy about it.
Peter: Yeah. Some kind of negative emotion.
Yūichi: Yeah disappointment.
Peter: Exactly. So with that said, I think we are going to stop here today and we are going to find out more. I can’t wait for next week.
Naomi: どうなるんでしょうね。(Dō naru n deshō ne.)
Peter: Give us a taste. お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
Yūichi: タイムカプセルがどこに埋められたかを思い出してみてください。(Taimu kapuseru ga doko ni umerareta ka o omoidashite mite kudasai.)
Naomi: あ~。(Ā.) You mean イチョウの木 (ichō no ki)?
Yūichi: そうです。イチョウの木の下に埋められています。(Sō desu. Ichō no ki no shita ni umerarete imasu.)
Peter: So the time capsule is buried right beside or right under the ginkgo tree.
Naomi: でもマクドナルドにね、なってしまいましたからね。(Demo Makudonarudo ni ne, natte shimaimashita kara ne.)
Peter: らしいですね。(Rashii desu ne.) So it seems like that tree was cut down and a McDonald’s is built there but we will see if that’s the case in the next episode.

Outro

Naomi: じゃあ、また。(Jā, mata.)
Peter: さよなら。(Sayonara.)
